Hardly the mess its made out to be. The movie isn't really about anything, and historically important happenings take a backseat to high class decadence. ...but that's the point. The cast is great, the soundtrack is killer, and the visuals are lush. Coppola is unafraid to let a shot linger until we've truly absorbed every detail, and on none more so than the very last. It's the perfect ending, a fitting comment that never says a word. It's a slow movie, but moments like that are pure perfection.

An object lesson in film's ability to convey complex, contradictory feelings. Forget the soundtrack or the lavish production design, which renders the era in gaudy, confectionary pastels; it's the casting that's most startling, not least Jason Schwartzman's ineffectual Louis XVI. Yet for all its satire of aristocratic pomposity, there's an undeniable glamour to the monarchy's idyllic lifestyle, and the tragedy of Marie's own circumstance is not entirely swept away by righteous revolution.

Coppola is so focused on creating a contemporary context for Marie Antoinette's life -- intentional anachronisms, modern speech and mannerisms, hip soundtrack, unorthodox casting choices -- that she forgets to imbue her film with emotional content. It plods along, going "Check it out! A song by Gang of Four!Converse sneakers! Asia Argento!" but rarely gives you a reason to care about what's happening. And Dunst really does kinda suck as an actress.

I think it gives a very nice view of the 18th century. All the protocols and the pressure of arranged marriages. Of course the cinematography is great. (would you expect annything else from Coppola??) But still , it's difficult to make a coherent film from such a long period. Overall a pretty good movie, but not as good as Lost in Translation.

I am not a big fan of Sofia. Also I guess I wasn't as bored as most. The movie has a problem with pacing. There are many topics lying around, begging to progress, just for a moment Sofia takes that direction, in the next scene she returns back to pretty looking nothing. One would think comtemporary songs should give M.A. a dynamic like Luhrmann movies. That moments quickly get lost along with others.

The first hour is fresh, pretty, sad, funny and touching. The second hour is flabby, adolescent, uninsightful and overly predictable. It depresses me that Coppola screwed up something that was really going somewhere at first. More flaws: the soundtrack is obnoxious new-wave rock that's completely out of place, and Kirsten Dunst is a hateful douchebag. Aside from Asia Argento, the main cast is unimpressive.

After three viewings (Shut up!) I am fully convinced this is a masterpiece. Dunst is stunning with her portrayal of Marie Antoinette, her face able to convey so many different emotions at the exact same time (I reference the second opera scene here) and Coppola completely overhauls the stereotypes of both Marie Antoinette and the period piece. It demands to be viewed multiple times, and it rewards with something new each and every time.

A hermetical masterpiece. Coppola takes our period-piece expectations and shatters them, concentrating instead on emotional impressionism as biography. It works.

A failure, but not without interest. Great settings and costumes and Kirsten Dunst's performance is skillful in the way it elicits the audience's sympathy. Yet Coppola makes some really awful mistakes as a director: the score is one of the worst I've ever heard, and the the audience never gains a sense of the broader issues shaping Antoinette's (and France's) destiny. The film ends abruptly, before her beheading, leaving the audience divided between "Why?" and "Huh?"

Tries way too hard to be hip. I had high hopes for this one and it could have been really good, but it seemed like the main focus was to have a "cool" soundtrack and appeal to 15-year-old girls. And really? Kirsten Dunst was your best choice?

Extremely underrated due to lack of plot probably, this film is like a little haiku about a precious human life like any other, but which happens to be the life of this particular person, a life of very unusual circumstances. Daring use of pop music works beautifully, imbuing the film with an electrifying air of youth and nostalgia simultanously (or at least for those who have strong associations with Coppola's chosen songs, like myself).

I love it when a director takes a huge risk in making a movie and it succeeds on every front, especially a period piece. Coppola takes some liberties with the history (and adds a few anachronisms), but all with purpose. The soundtrack was surprising, yet absolutely fitting. Dunst and Schwartzman had great performances. Loved the cinematography, sets, costumes, art design. Everything flowed really well. I think you get how much I loved this movie...

Marie Antoinette isn't a complete disaster, if only because its style almost makes it worth seeing, but due to the content being so dull and the main performances being so uninteresting, it's really hard to recommend it. The loneliness of its lead is well-communicated, and the film looks fantastic -- it's also moderately funny, so there's that, too -- but I'm not sure how worthwhile a more "modern" take on the pre-Revolution story of Marie's life truly is.

A 1980s teen melodrama transposed into Ancien Regime intrigue, daring to sympathize one of history's great villains, certainly at the expense of academic accuracy, but rendered with immediacy, relatability, and exuberance in its adoption of non-classical form.

Utterly charming and captivating costume drama finds Coppola pulling off an anachronistic but credible portrait, fired by Dunst's wonderful central performance, and backed by a perfect support cast all playing to the grotesqueries of their characters. Very funny at times, especially during the daffy absurdities of royal life, while not neglecting the roiling tragedy to come in the final act. Capped by resplendent costume and set design which makes this seductive world one to luxuriate in.

This film has persuaded me to watch every Sophia Coppola film that she ever makes for the entirety of her career. Yes, I love it that much. Lost in Translation is also very good, but Marie Antoinette as a direct followup to Lost in Translation successfully packs such a one-two punch that Coppola's pretty much earned my loyalty for life. It doesn't matter if she never makes another good movie. I'll watch just for glimpses of the genius that we found in these two films.

If you can accept critically-acclaimed, but mostly historically inaccurate and somewhat anachronistic, films like Jesus Christ Superstar, Gladiator, and Braveheart, perhaps you might be able to cut Marie Antoinette the slack necessary, allowing the artistic license to properly engage you as a story about a young girl struggling to find herself.

Sometimes it seems like the long scenic shots take away from more informative dialog, but in the end, I think many people misunderstand the stylistic choices. It's a take-it-for-what-it-is style of story-telling. Instead of the characters telling us what's happening, we just see it unfold. Interesting and beautiful. Momentum slows down in second half and then quickly wraps it up.

Sofia Coppola's approach is brave and admirable. Being rather indifferent towards historical facts, she directs an original period piece which lets mood and athmosphere overshadow the historical narrative. It becomes a personal story of a person who, like Charlotte and Bob in LiT, is completely lost in a strange and alien environment. While I love the idea behind it, it doesn't work that well. It's disinterest in story makes it incoherent and some of the dreamy scenes feel a bit too tacky.

On a purely visual level, this film is stunning, a true masterpiece. In countless sumptuously-filmed scenes, Sofia Coppola's mastery of light usage shows her music video roots; meanwhile the dazzling, opulent, decadent array of costumes, hairdos, accessories, sets and locations truly puts high art spectacular into period drama, livening up a dull genre no end. It's 1776 viewed with a 2006 colour palette and Vogue stylists. However, in narrative structure terms, the film is nigh on unwatchable.

This starts with an interesting premise, but failed to explore it deeply enough. Coppola starts with the fact that Marie Antoinette was a teenager taken from inside one comfortable bubble and placed in another, more hostile one, and had no choice in the matter. And? You won't find much of an answer here, except on a very personal level that might be hard for the underprivileged to relate to.

Huge potential, squandered. The much of the music is indy-rock trash that doesn't fit the period at all. And while Schwartzman manages to not be completely awful, his performance is entirely bland. Shot selection is often poor, and there is no sense of scale at all. Perhaps the most important problem: If you are hoping to see a guillotine or the dauphine's head in a basket as per the historical record, sorry but Sofia Coppola doesn't think that's worth having in a film about Marie Antoinette.
