Suspense/Thriller, Action

A double-bill of thrillers that recall both filmmakers' favorite exploitation films. "Grindhouse" (a downtown movie theater in disrepair since its glory days as a movie palace known for "grinding out" non-stop double-bill programs of B-movies) is presented as one full-length feature comprised of two individual films helmed separately by each director. You'll get your money's worth with this one. PLANET TERROR is gross, silly, and a lot of fun. After some great fake trailers DEATH PROOF sorta slows the whole thing down. The inconsistent tone and pace may be intentional, but the long dialogue scenes feel out of place, and the first batch of unlikeable characters are developed for too long. Fortunately it leads up to a decent car chase and a "what the hell was that" kind of ending. Overall, GRINDHOUSE mostly succeeds with the theme.

Clear difference between the two movies. Planet Terror is meant to be over the top and parodic, while Death Proof is more of a tribute to the genre in general. Both movies are incredible in their own right. The overal menacing atmosphere in Death Proof is simply... well, menacing. And the last half hour is jaw-dropping. Planet Terror was less deep, but doesn't fuck around and is meant to be just what it is. The trailers were nothing short of hysterical. Did not disappoint in the least.

Amazing. Truly a one-of-a-kind experience in theatres during its unfortunately brief run. Perhaps if they'd dumbed it down and added some pirates and penguins it would've had a chance with Americans.

I wanted to like this much more than I did. Rodriguez's film is the stronger film, but Tarantino's film had better moments (however brief they may have been). The trailers in between the films were fantastic too, especially Edgar Wright's contribution.

Unbelievably stupid and violent, but it may also be one of the best things ever put together for cinema. Planet Terror is the funnier, sillier, insane adrenaline rush while Death Proof is more dramatic with some quirky dialogue and "ooohh!" sort of violence. The fake trailers are a real delight. See this in the theatre! You'll have a great time.

Rodrguez and Tarantino bring ambition and a take-no-sh*t attitude to the screen that sticks to you, but i will say Rodriguez's campy 'Planet Terror' pales in comparison to Tarantino's dialogue-driven 'Death Proof.' All-in-all, an entertaining 3 and a half hour ride.

Deathproof is standard Tarantino pap... over indulgent dialogue about the 70s for 40-odd minutes then a little action. Rinse and repeat. Rodriguez's Planet Terror is excellent all over with all the necessary components for gory schlock present. Skip Deathproof and head straight for the good stuff.

The "double feature" format for these films only underlines what a failed, albeit interesting, experiment these were for Rodriguez and Tarantino, as they straddle the awkward line between parody and sincerity; if either film-maker had sincerely committed to making an artful grindhouse movie, this would have been far more enjoyable. Car chases aside, PROOF is a surprisingly dreary mess, with TERROR by far the better realised half. The additional trailers at intermission are beautifully executed.

Just an incredible moviegoing experience. Planet Terror is over the top nonstop fun. Rose McGowan is great in both her roles. A very successful homage to the exploitation genre. Death Proof, on the other hand, seems to rework the exploitation genre, making it more an interesting character study. Kurt Russell is awesome. The main theme to Grindhouse is incredible. The trailers are the highlight, the best being "Don't."

Fucking extreme to the max! Everything is awesome, the only real lull is the first half of Death Proof...but obviously by my score it wasn't much of a lull. The whole experience was just wonderful. The fake trailers are all unique, extreme, hilarious, and wonderful. My favorite thing was probably the cast of Death Proof, Kurt Russell is brilliant. Rosario Dawson, Tracie Thoms and Zoe Bell are pretty much the greatest chick trio ever put to film.

Why are these people _celebrating_ bad, offensive, gory, offensive, inhumane, offensive, lousy, offensive, foul, offensive movies that are better off decomposing like most of the characters in this odious movie? Why are some of you playing games of intellectual self-abuse to justify demeaning and dehumanising "entertainment" of the sort represented by this movie? Movies like this are proof that civilization is in decay.

I have to say that Tarantino's Death Proof was a disappointment. Fortunately, Rodriguez nailed his end of the double feature; Planet Terror has the edge in every category, from its over-the-top visuals and action to the very funny dialogue, acting, and plot. After Planet Terror, Death Proof seems a somewhat superfluous entertainment.

Fully captures the exhilarating 50s feel of watching a drive-in movie on a saturday night, which is both good and bad. This double-trouble feature includes two films. The first is Planet Terror, a silly, outrageous, over-the-top ridiculously gorey throwback to the legendary cult zombie era of the 70s, started by George A. Romero and continued here. Death Proof is an equally worthy successor. It's menancing, stylish, focused and cleverly paced. Who can resist the fake trailer too? Just brilliant.

This film gets such a high score because of the experience it brought to the theater. Both films were very solid, Death Proof being the better of the two, while Planet Terror was all blood and no guts. Both my ratings for Death Proof and Planet Terror are lower than Grindhouse. Why? Tarantino's bit is indulgent and boring, too much in love with the idea of making a trashy exploitation movie to actually do a decent job of it. Rodriguez on the other hand deliveres a genuinely fun splattery mess. The fake trailers are worth a laugh and as a whole the double bill is amusing if a bit exhausting.

I don't know what this is meant to be. It's not a homage. "Chinatown" is a homage to Film Noir in the sense that uses many of the standard elements of that genre to tell a new story that was relevant to it's own era (also see "Body Heat"). This is not like that at all. It's almost parody, only it doesn't contain jokes. Taking generic action films and ramping everything up past 11 does not make something a Grindhouse homage.

Quite a lot of fun. While Rodriguez' entry features over the top action, bad puns, and manic glee in gore, Tarantino's slower pacing feels more authentically like classic low budget thrillers- yet at the same time it subverts and plays around with the conventions just as much as it adopts them. A heck of an experience to see in theaters.

I haven't had this much fun at a movie in quite a while. Planet Terror is every bit as gory and good as any Romero movie, with excellent acting and dark comedic elements. Action in handfuls. Death Proof is a completely different movie, but almost as good. Kurt Russell (and you will never hear me say this again) was amazing. He stole the movie every scene he was in. The dialogue might be a little tiresome (unless you enjoy female chit chat), but luckily it sports one of the best car chases

Planet Terror was great, action packed, gore filled, and sexy ladies. It had a great ending, and my only complain was the stupid missing real part, which okay i see what your going for but c'mon, c'mon. The fake trailers were all pretty funny, with my personal favourite having to be Hobo with a Shotgun. A near perfect take on the exploitation genre's of the 70's grindhouses. Unfortunately that is also what hurts the film. Tarantino's segment is true to form in having to hold off the budget until the end for his truly spectacular car chase. Rodriguez spends his time in a homage more befitting to video games than the 70's cinema, not that the decadence isn't glorious. The trailers included are a complete joy for anyone who has ever seen real trailers of this sort. Again Rodriguez is a bit

I unapologetically love this film! as a fan of both Quentin Tarrantino and Robert Rodriguez, this film (actually 2 films - but MUST be seen in it's original US theatrical release version - with faux trailers, "missing reels", melted film splotches, etc.) This homage to the exploitation, slasher "B" films of the 70's is wild ride. Boring, dull, unimaginative, tedious, painful.Planet Terror couldn't live up to the original straight-to-video back shelf b-movies of the 80s, so why bother. Deathproof dragged interminably with lengthy and terminally boring conversations that went absolutely nowhere; didn't reveal character, culture or move the plot. I can imagine Tarantino self-congratulating about how lifelike it all was but true-to-life makes for boring cinema. And how did a make-up girl turn kung-fu killer exactly? Avoid!

Bumped up a few points for the "Don't" trailer, which was the most inspired part of the whole enterprise. There were some classic send-ups of the late '70s and early '80s horror genre (loved that the sheriff wouldn't give whatshisname the gun) in PT, but I still thought it was not much more than Rodriguez consciously doing a bad movie. What's the point? As for "Death Proof", I enjoyed Stuntman Mike and the great car chase. But WAY too much (bad and unnecessarily profane) dialogue.

The concept of recreating a trashy, old-school night at the movies is entertaining, but the joke wears off before the huge number of reels have fully unspooled. Rodriguez's Planet Terror is the more successful of the pair, primarily because he has fully bought into the conceit and constructed a film that revels in the raw excesses of genre exploitation. Tarantino has simply made a Tarantino movie with a road revenge plot. For Rodriguez, the grindhouse is an inspiration. For Tarantino, an excuse.
