From New Zealand comes a wickedly offbeat love story - a funny, fractured romance between two total misfits, woven into an all-consuming quest for revenge, and shot through with the strange, sweet hilarity of the human condition. (Miramax Films)

This movie's going to take a lot of heat because it's in a quite similar style to Napoleon Dynamite, Little Miss Sunshine and Juno. However I found it to be better than all three of those movies. In this the characters are actually awkward to the point of being painful, not just really quirky but in a lovable way, just awkard. I couldn't count the amount of times a subtle reference was made to a previous joke that made me laugh quite hard. Plus Taika Cohen really has a knack for cinematography.

Napoleon Dynamite in New Zealand. Seriously, exact same humor style, except maybe a bit meaner and more awkward. Jemain's character is not as lovable as Napoleon cause he's an utter jackass, but he's still funny. Overall it's probably not as funny, but certain scenes are goddamn hilarious. It's worth a watch even if it's nothing spectacular. PS New Zealand accents are ridiculous.

Though the characters are far from what you'd call well-adjusted and though the film is riddled with cringe-worthy moments, there was a surprising amount of depth and complexity to their lives.

This New Zealand-made romantic comedy isn't terribly original, owing an obvious debt to Napoleon Dynamite, but the gags and characters are good enough that it doesn't really matter.

Pretty awesome love story. A lot of people are drawing parallels between this and Napoleon Dynamite. Bottom line is, Napoleon Dynamite sucks dick and this movie is actually enjoyable.

If you had to give an example of the word quirky this movie would be perfect. I liked the characters (to a point) and there were some very funny moments. Unfortunately, I just really couldn't get into the humor. It's like Napoleon Dynamite and Gentlemen Broncos in that, I like the movies but they don't resonate with me as much as they do with a lot of people. If you really enjoy that style of humor you'll love it.

I knew it, there is more to NZ filmmaking than the LOTR! A not so new story however told with very imaginative pictures and little plot lines. The characters are quirky and awkward, but somehow loveable and funny, especially the male protagonist in his quest to show everybody how great he is. This leaves much room for feelings of secondhand embarrassment, but always in a funny way. Recommendable!

Pros: New Zealand accents, Horsley was very likeable, enjoyable enough to watch happily once. Cons: Jemaine's character was basically Napoleon Dynamite 10 years out of high school, which was kind of a rip off. The animation shorts interspersed throughout the movie seemed out of place. Overall: It was decent and I enjoyed watching it, but it's not something I could watch a second time. There were a few times when I laughed out loud, but ultimately, I'll probably forget about it in a few days.

Offbeat romcom in the vein of Napoleon Dynamite. Starts pretty well but they don't come up with any new jokes and the movie drags on.

Walks a rather thin tight-rope, which kept me hoping for a good ending to salvage what was the story of an aggressive egg-head of a character-as-objective (Jermaine Clement) surrounded by depressing characters and the depressing New Zealand air. In the end, it turned out .... badly. Maybe not as bad as it could've been; it's relatively unpredictable and a bit comical at times, but it's more sour than I thought it was going to be. This is rotten fruit, and I usually throw that stuff away.

An oddball film, mostly in an appealing way. The cast is well-chosen and the overall style - the visuals, tempo, photography, soundtrack - is nice. Nevertheless, it feels kind of derivative; there aren't many surprises and it could be argued that its weirdness exists in a rather predictable, familiar frame of reference.

I'm sick of anything with the word "indie" implied, especially with "vs" in the title. They really should have stopped with I Heart Huckabees and Little Miss Sunshine...

I had to turn this off. I loved the eccentricity of Napoleon Dynamite, but this film tries way too hard to achieve a similar level of quirk, and while Napoleon wasn't the most sympathetic character, he's leagues beyond any sort of connection you'll feel towards the two sad-sack leads here.

Quirky little pic. The first half is endearing-- the second half drags on a bit. Another reviewer said it best: 'Napolean Dynamite in New Zealand [but] Jemain's character is not as lovable as Napolean cause he's an utter jackass.' (Skenkere) My sentiments, exactly.

Pretty much boring throughout the film. The best part of course, is the fight scene between Jarrod and his highschool bully. Watching this movie just for that scene, to me, is worth it. Think of this as a New Zealander's Napoleon Dynamite.

Too crude to be really cute or to be taken really seriously. But at a runtime on less than 90 minutes it provides enough of laughs and quirkiness to be a harmless funny time-killer.

Eagle vs Shark shoots for having a lot of indie cred with a folksy soundtrack and pointless claymation interludes, but just doesn't leave any lasting impression. The protagonist Lily, is too faultless to be interesting and most of the conflict involves the characters brooding like adolescents. There are some nice comedy touches, thanks to Germaine from Flight of the Conchords, but overall too much melancholic introspection.

Amusing. Jarrod might be a bit too much on the unlikable side for the tone the film is aiming for. But Waititi follows that thread until the end, which yields a pretty good payoff.
