I wake up in a hotel room with the mother of all headaches, covered in raspberry sauce and wearing pants made out of newspapers. There is a note next to me that reads 'Write more Criticker reviews ya dingus'. A TV is playing, showing a movie starring John Cusack. It tries to set up an intruiging mystery and it even succeeds in the beginning but then random shit starts happening and oh it's like Dante's Inferno except hard to care about. Ok. I stumble out of the room into the harsh light of day.

It started creepy, and then got really creepy, and then got boring. But the last five seconds of the movie was slightly creepy again. A nice attempt, but at least John Cusack is always fun to watch.

It started out fantastic and the hotel manager's resistance to renting the room was exceedingly well done. The first couple of minutes in the room are genuinely creepy due to the surreal aspect of it. However, once the shock scares start the movie really takes a nose dive in terms of frights. It does, however, pick up literally right at the end of the movie.

Has amazing build-up and a great, eerie atmosphere along with a spooky score. The last third of it though is dull, predicatable and it seems like Hafstrom ran out of ideas and just added this part out of nowhere. Still, a pretty decent horror film.

At the beginning the movie created a thick atmosphere of suspense, but after a while it got a bit too predictable, just standard ghost movie scary parts( ghosts in the mirror, phones ringing, rivers of blood etc. etc...). Most of the points are for the psychological and dramatical aspect of the movie (is it real, or is it all in his head?). Nice plot twist at the end though!

1408 is a film marked by good scenes with Cusack and Jackson and a well controlled build up of tension however is let down by some of the overly dull sections towards the start and an overly predictable plotline, even if some of the twists towards the end come as a bit of a surprise. While the atmosphere of the room quickly builds throughout the first signs of paranormal activity, the predictability of the shocks numbs the interest of the movie later on. Overall it's pretty good though.

Very good and convincing performance by John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson only had a small roll in the film, but he did fine as usual. The story itself wasn't bad, perhaps a bit predictable at times. There aren't a lot of thrills, just creepy and suspensful at times. Don't expect a scary horror film that makes you sleep with the lights on at night, and it's not a deep psychological film either. Watch it for what it is and enjoy John Cusack's performance, don't go in with too high expectations.

The scares start out great, small things that just make it all very eerie. Then it starts becoming way too Hollywood big and eerie become jump scares and noise. Cusack keeps me interested though and does a great job in a tough lone man role.

1408, the best King adaptation since, well, The Shining, is about as mind-churning and bizarrely startling an American horror picture as you will see with a PG-13 slapped on it. Cusack is great here in a mostly one-man show. I'm willing to venture that this will be the best scare-fest of the year.

Cusack's performance really elevates the movie above its standard jump-scares -- good thing, too: outside of a small (but effective) role filled by Sam Jackson, this is largely a one-man show. While the movie isn't as scary as it should be, John makes sure it's always engaging. Hafstrom has a slick directorial style, and I think with the right script, he could make a top-notch horror movie. This isn't it, but it's a start -- the "mailroom demolition" sequence is particularly memorable.

Cusack is solid and the movie starts out strong with a nice buildup about the room delivered by Samuel L. Jackson. The atmosphere and early scares are pretty good; however, the intensity never really ramps up to a point where you feel sure the the room should break the main character. After a strong start, the back half is just a bit disappointing in this regard. Still, nothing is particularly "bad" - so, at worst, this still remains a perfectly serviceable psychological horror/thriller.

Benoit Delhomme is the cinematographer. That's about the only nice thing I can say about this godawful movie. Boring, cliched, predictable scares. The biggest problem is that when you set up a situation where ANYTHING can happen, then NOTHING is surprising, or interesting. Oh look, the room fucked him over again, what a shocker. All the backstory crap with the dead child was painfully bad and utterly transparent. And I've never seen such poor acting from Cusack. What a waste of time.

It was alright. Very scary and tense in some places, kind of boring in others. John Cusack is a great actor who seems to be improving with age. I loved the back story of his family and wish it had come out more in the movie. I'm still not sure what the creepy look at the end was supposed to symbolize, but it was off-setting to say the least.

Worlds better than I expected. Cusack is great and Jackson lays it on so thick you can't help but fall for the room's mystique. Respect to anyone that can turn a good film out of King's novels. He's shooting a paltry five out of sixty-three (may not be accurate count).

1408 is a very good psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat for the majority of its runtime. Cusack gives a great performance in the lead, and the film's plot allows us to watch him get put through a terrible situation. It becomes less interesting as it progresses, but it's still an intense film that will get your heart rate up, so I say it's worth a watch.

There are a few scares here and there but the film is way too polished to take you very far into that atmosphere. Cusack is pretty good in this and the film is far more psychological than I expected. Samuel L. Jackson makes an appearance and instantly takes you out of this movie perhaps a sign that he's become overexposed now.

The first 30 minutes of this movie are probably the most effective build up I've seen in a horror movie this side of The Shining. When he was unlocking the door to room 1408, I had chills down my spine. Unfortunately the rest of the movie doesn't entirely live up to the first 30 minutes, but it does continue to be intriguing and fairly creepy throughout.

Room 1408 is a spiritual place, purgatory up to heaven or down to hell. Movie's got good fibe and interesting effects. Samuel L. Jackson is as good as he always can be. But the story fails to put too much cheap scary effects and they did not chew the story enough to make it sharp and clean. Like that it's a half way job easy to watch, easy to forget. Old hotel rooms are nice sources for horror flicks; so many people, so many stories to tell about.

There's a 70 minute B-movie horror masterpiece lurking in this ultimately bloated effort, which has a terrific first half (using The Carpenters as a harbinger to bleak malevolence just one terrific touch) and an unusually powerful and intense performance from Cusack to anchor things. Loses its way in the second half once the claustrophobic confines are violated, and goes on much too long towards a weak resolution. Still fun, but oh what could have been with the back half largely chopped out.

A very forgetable horror flick. Many of the set pieces are vague gestures at better movies that came before it (e.g., Jacob's Ladder, and, of course, The Shining) and, ultimately, very little of it is successful at being spooky. It doesn't help that Cusack seems positively amused by how ridiculous the script gets, barely suppressing a wry smile then hastily trying to pass it off as his character's psychotic break. At least there aren't as many cliches as the usual modern horror dross.

A mediocre adaptation of a short story that probably shouldn't have been adapted in the first place. Do we need to make every Stephen King story, no matter how short, into a feature film? Everything that makes the short story good is lost by fleshing it out into 90 minutes of plot. That doesn't mean there aren't good performances, effects, and the like, but the entire story is tacked onto the original concept haphazardly and I wound up sincerely not caring about the film's resolution.

The beginning of the movie writes a check that the rest of it can't cash. By the last 2/3, you can tell they've run out of twists and spooky things to throw at the audience, so the plot cannibalizes itself in self-reference. A few seemingly pointless last-minute turns make me wonder whether they were trying to leave the story open for a sequel, or just squeeze a few more jumps out of the audience. Maybe they were just floundering to try and work a satisfying ending out of the story.

Somewhat scary thriller. Samuel L. Jackson shines through the gloom of the movie, bringing his characteristic presence to the screen (albeit briefly). The progressive horrors Cusack encounters seemed to be building up to something, but it felt like 2/3 of the way through the movie the writer/director went, "Shit, now where do we go with this movie?" A molitov cocktail as god in the machine ensues, and the movie ends. I think a more dramatic and thematically consistent end was possible...
