This Island Earth

60 years from now, this is how people will look at Avatar: "I'm sure the special effects were amazing at the time, but I'm glad we've invented screenwriters since then."

The only thing that made this movie interesting was the foreheads. Still, it is saved by the MSTers in MST3k the movie.

At least interesting enough to be used in the MST3K movie.

It's weird. There's interesting events happening in this movie, but after you watch it a couple times, you realize that absolutely nothing that the main characters do matters - they're essentially sightseers to someone else's apocalypse.

Some amazing visuals in this film, both for it's time and ours. The storyline is pretty dull though and the characters do little for me. Some pretty ridiculous make up as well, it has to be said. Enjoyable enough though, if not as exciting as it wants to be.

Bad, but not nearly as bad as MST3K made it out to be (in a 50's-kitsch-sci-fi kind of way, viewable on its own).

Mildly diverting, but fairly silly offering. The MST3K version is worth seeing.

It's definitely a bad movie, I won't argue that, but it I don't think it's bad enough to deserve a MST3k treatment. My viewpoint is probably skewed though since other than this, all I've seen is Manos and Teenagers from Outerspace. Now those were some shitty films.

Watched in preparation for MST3K's take - what starts as an intriguing and gripping sci-fi premise starts to deteriorate badly into lunacy once the space travel starts - constipated performances from Reason and Domergue don't help matters, made worse in contrast to the overwrought performances from the aliens. Admittedly the effects work is well done (especially the realisation of the alien planet), but is all nearly undermined by the threatening exploits of the "mu-tant". You could do worse!

Bad and boring. Not much else to say.

The middle section is decent despite some groan-worthy dialogue. It at least creates a good bit of mystery and tension and is kind of fun. The opening is very cheesy, though, and the ending is a tedious uninteresting mess.

I love the idea of it, but the acting is so wooden, writing so goofball and characters incredibly stupid that it just doesn't hold water.

While this movie does have an interesting premise, a decent budget and a well cast ensemble of actors this has not aged as well as some of its contemporaries.

The story and the effects are really what turn you off to the film. You don't feel that deeply for anyone.

The aliens look cool, but the film is pretty sluggish.

Did anybody actually watch this sans MST3K? Can't imagine.

When you can make the world's funniest movie just by commenting how bad THIS one is (watch: Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Movie) - then it IS really bad. Large foreheads and mint-green airplanes? We have come far in special effects, it seems.

horrible. There is a reason why mystery science theater picked this movie to watch and criticize. I think it gets a couple bonus points because I got to watch it with them and their comments.

"This Island Earth," with its vibrant hues, unfolds as a comic book sprung to life, complete with a story and performances that align perfectly with that style. It's a comprehensive package offering interstellar conflict, empathy, deceit, and love. As a piece of 1950s science fiction, it remains remarkably enduring.

Look for The Professor from GILLIGAN'S ISLAND in this colorful, somewhat silly Sf adventure that has some big ideas but is too staid and stiff to ever come alive. A guilty pleasure.

The film itself is pretty bad; dudes with foreheads and bad acting. MST3K makes this a masterpiece though, making it extremely hilarious

No, I haven't watched it. This is an MST3K thing.

Not as bad as most MST3K fodder, but still terribly boring and dated.

Obviously it was the MST3K version of this I watched. By itself it would be a good tonic for sleep.
