McKellen is excellent, Renfro plods on in a workmanlike perfomance. Singer is a talented director but the movie never grabs hold of the subject matter like it should.

Don't let my score lead anyone into thinking this movie isn't worth watching, because it is. It's extremely funny. Ian McKellen marching in place doing the Hitler greeting had me curled up on the couch. The story revolves around a mutual blackmail situation that really doesn't work because if you think about it there's no leverage at all. It's a huge misunderstanding salvaged with cringeworthy deus ex-machina coincidences: Stephen King at full force.

A pretty good adaptation of one of my favourite stories by Stephen King. The sinister nature within both characters develops at a good pace and you are left to watch things begin to unravel.

I tend to get irritated with my neighbors just for the political signs on their lawn. This movie proves it could be worse.

Taut psychodrama with a nasty and very effective premise. It's slickly made but the performances are generally underplayed, making it all the more gripping.

Don't watch this unless you are in the mood to think and examine. In the same vein as American History X....this movie is heavy and deep...only watch if you are free from distractions

McKellen is perfectly cast. Brad Renfro on the other hand is shitty and his acting is a holocaust unto itself.

Relatively stupid movie that deals with an incredibly tense subject matter. It's only well acted by Ian McKellan, the rest of the cast is awful. Couple all of this with subject matter dealt with incorrectly and you get a stupid movie.

One of the better Stephen King adaptations (and I consider this his darkest story). It's not really easy to watch a movie where the two main characters are bad people. Ian McKellen is great and Brad Renfro is good but probably because he is carried in almost every scene by McKellen. If you like the novella it's worth a shot.

Pretty damn good. Very intense, and every performance is stellar, especially David Schwimmer, who's unrecognizable.

A better crafted creepy picture, amazing for having been penned by King who usually translates to the screen as a turd. The minimum of onscreen gore translates into exploring some themes about power & the different track is a welcome relief.

McKellen was the scariest ex-nazi when he put on the uniform and started goose stepping as he reminisced. ::chills:: Other than that, it wasn't a spectacular film, but I did enjoy it for the most part.

Nazi German Jewish Fun. Really good for suspense, but a hint of horror too.

The film is carried by Ian McKellen with excellent acting. There are a few suspenseful moments, but they are mixed in with a lot of tedious build up. The boy discovers a Nazi war criminal, and this is where the plot goes sideways, he blackmails the man into telling him the gory details of his war atrocities. The man eventually turns the table on the boy with psychological warfare, and the boy learns that lesson well, thus the title. A shabby premise and pretentious plot to get to the point.

Character motivation? I can't accept that the student becomes a brutal, calculating, wannabe-fascist just because he's smart and bored. Too much of a stretch.

Very muddled thriller; inexplicable in parts. There's good acting, but not nearly enough character development. Also ends on a weird note, as if the director just got really bored with it, called it quits, and took the grandkids out for ice cream.

The story's interesting but its execution is dated; this was a good movie for the 1990s. I would like to see a remake with better directing, cinematography and acting.
