Persepolis rushes through conflicting moods fast enough to be both harrowing and exuberant. It flies by, slashing open your heart, your mind and your funny bone before you know what hit you. Marjane Satrap tells the complicated story of her coming-of-age in post-revolution Iran with broad, confident strokes.

The visuals in this are just wonderful. Loved the multi-layered backgrounds, and the use of shadow is often quite effective. The characters are full-fledged human beings, which makes it easy to connect with them. And the wry sense of humor throughout offers both a respite and a challenge. Very well done.

Persepolis isn't like anything else you'll have ever seen visually. It's striking and rich, vibrant without being colorful, and in many ways arresting on the eyes. That being said, there's not much else here. From time to time the writing is good enough to get a big laugh out of you, but it's hard to connect with the drama or impact of the character's situation due to some rather bizarre transitions and editing. Persepolis is certainly a good movie, but it could have been much better.

Semi-autobiographical story a young Iranian girl growing up under the Shah and then fundamentalism. It's an intriguing blend of political history and coming-of-age tale, although for once I actually preferred the political stuff to the more human stuff. Some of the anecdotes are a bit mundane, especially during the Vienna portion of the film. The art & animation is unusual, with a kind of children's storybook style to it. Generally rewarding and occasionally moving, despite a few dull spots.

Boldly drawn and extremely entertaining, Persepolis moves along quickly with lots of energy and powerful storytelling. Unlike most narrators, Marj isn't an annoying little bird right by your ear, she tells the story well, and it's a good one. Listen.

Does the book justice, and this is one of very few books that do so. Most of Marjane's stay in Austria plays out like it's all a dream unlike in the book where it's more coherently laid out and with how Marjane saw the whole experience, it worked.

An odd adaptation. A bit more didactic than the original works, and a lot of my favorite bits were left out, but on the other hand, it is in its own right an amazingly beautiful film with very innovative animation and perfect music. The emotions of the original work are captured quite well, I just felt that a few scenes were too direct and not as elegant as the books. Worthwhile, but not without flaws.

Very successful animation, funny and touching at the same time. Good story, strong message, highly informative. Focuses on themes general public does know much about. Lots of background information what's happening (present and past) in Islamic countries. Especially to kids and women. Alive figures, good backgrounds, innovative animating, lots of interesting animated details. Never seen the original comics story though.

The off-key version of "Eye of the Tiger" is AWESOME. Otherwise, this movie kind of meanders...but it's a diary, essentially. It's a slice-of-life movie, and it's going to meander. The animation is absolutely superb. I LOVED the style. Story-wise, it was weak in only a few areas. I recommend it.

I finished reading the book the afternoon beofre I saw the film, and I loved both. These both break down some barriers I had, and shows that the way the we perceive the people of the middle east is jaded by the media. Marjanne growing up was just like me, rebellious and lucky to have a loving family, I especially loved her grandmother. Warning... if you are not into cartoons, subtitles, or black and white give this a miss.

Marjane Satrapi's original extended graphic novel Persepolis is episodic, often feeling like a collection of three or four page stories instead of a single cohesive work. It's also moving, revelatory and culturally rich. This animated adaptation naturally shares the strengths and weaknesses of the original work. The animation captures the simple but evocative quality of Satrapi's artwork and invests it with enough unique energy that is feels fuller than mere recreated panels.

This movie being an animation was the only way it would have worked. At first I thought the animation was subpar, but once the color went away, the true nature and character of the film came out. Sure, it informs you briefly about the history of Iran, but it never came off as a documentary or a lecture from school. A perfect blend of serious and truth with a side of comedy makes for an enjoyable hour and a half.

Brilliant animation with an interesting story. Too many films strive for realism with their cartoons, if I wanted real life I'd watch a live-action film. The slight exaggerations are what make animation entertaining while still keeping it grounded in reality so that an emotional impact is still present. Even though Marjane is just black lines on white paper, try watching this film without feeling something for her.

One of the most visually interesting films I've ever watched illustrating a hard-hitting, emotional story while still managing to have a sense of wit. It doesn't elaborate on certain details as much as the comic does, but I prefer the film's approach of delivering a more eloquent aesthetic to elevate the emotions conveyed in the story - something the comic sorely lacked. It can perhaps be a bit confusing without political context, but this film is never preachy or grating with its message.

A bit meager in terms of narrative heft, I also found the narrator too self-involved and determined by self-pity for me to care too much -- I wanted to know more about her grandmother who seemed a much fuller charcter. The animation is lovely, mostly B&W, and the glimpse into Iran culture and politics is valuable, however.

Absolutely magical. Truly, this is perhaps the best example I've seen of a film using animation to get inside the head of the protagonist. The visual style is extremely simple, yet it's unique and instantly recognizable. This was one of the best films of the last decade, and I wish I had seen it sooner. A (mostly) monochrome biographical animation about the political turmoil in Iran shouldn't be as touching, whimsical and often laugh-out-loud funny as this is. The animation is simple yet inventive, and the somewhat depressing tale is constantly lightened by wry observations, off-the-wall humour and moments of genuine heartwarming humanity. This should have been an Oscar-winner.

I can't quite come up with the right adjective to describe how I feel about the movie - it's at parts cute, charming, funny, scary, sad and disturbing - it goes all over the place in telling a story of a young girl growing up amid political upheaval in Iran, and it's animated beautifully, with a style that fits every individual scene perfectly, and subtly changes throughout. My only issue for me would be that I saw the English dub - which I can't say was that impressive, acting-wise.

I now see why Marjane turned down the Hollywood-offer of making this a real film with lopez and other stars. This black and white really drags us back to the roots of this story: the graphic novel.
