Three American brothers who have not spoken to each other in a year set off on a train voyage across India with a plan to find themselves and bond with each other -- to become brothers again like they used to be. Their "spiritual quest", however, veers rapidly off-course (due to events involving over-the-counter pain killers, Indian cough syrup, and pepper spray), and they eventually find themselves stranded alone in the middle of the desert with eleven suitcases, a printer, and a laminating machine. At this moment, a new, unplanned journey suddenly begins. (Fox Searchlight)

The movie asks a lot of questions but never fully allows the characters to grow because they aren't saddled with a baby. That's how three men learn about life and each other. Everybody knows that.

I enjoyed it a lot but I also really want to see Wes step outside his comfort zone. I love his aesthetic sense, it's enchanting, but I wonder if he's buying too much into the cult of Wes Anderson. I hate to begrudge a filmmaker for having a distinctive stamp, it's just starting to feel more like a template than a style. He needs to break away from these same disaffected characters looking for a family, shouldering their melancholy with a world-weary sigh. Bonus points for Satyajit Ray music.

Anderson is doing more than skirting self-parody. He's beginning to reach the point where his entire oeuvre is some precious thing held up for admiration rather than work that hits you in the mind and heart the way the best films do. Darjeeling is amusing and interesting, but it's rarely compelling. The themes feel familiar, the arch tone too distancing. With little to no inclination to upend his standard methodology, Anderson is finally running the risk of quirking himself into insignificance.

Well-worn territory for Anderson. I've seen India, so the setting wasn't very exciting, but the character interactions were interesting enough to hold my attention. I'm getting a little concerned about Anderson's development as a director. If his next release isn't some sort of radical departure from his usual formula, I might give up on him.

Anderson is returning to the same themes, but each time it's with a new and interesting tonality. The 3 brothers here are wonderfully flawed characters and it's just fun (and funny) to watch them bounce off each other. Anderson certainly knows how to do family drama just right. Still, good that he branched out after this.

Contrary to how it usually works out for me, I tried really hard to hate this movie, unfortunately, I was unsuccessful. I am not one for the desert dry humor of Wes Anderson, it just so happens I really did like this one, it had a great story and some awesome acting, mostly from Wilson and Brody.

From the Hitchcockian existence of Bill Murray at the beginning I was lured into the movie. Anderson is able to sketch a reality that has an event progression only triggered by emotional significance. This time he also takes comedical nature a bit forward and puppeteering the characters to debate on their attempts at resolution. I don't care if he is in repetition of himself, at least he is going for a new texture every time and I can take it every few years for the next 15 years.

Another bizarre masterpiece by Wes Anderson. Either you like his story telling or not. I think there's nothing in between. "The Darjeeling Limited" is full of great ideas, dry sense of humor and beautiful shots of india. It makes so much fun, watching this awesome cast on their way to self-discovery and undoubtedly I'm a fan of Wes Anderson's crazy style.

There's nothing here he hasn't done before, but it strikes a chord in me as strong as in The Royal Tenenbaums. Maybe I'm just a sucker for well-executed, sincere homage. It feels like Anderson might soon step outside the isolation of personal ties and work in a richer social context, but he hasn't quite reached that yet. Here's hoping.

Wes Anderson proves that you can make a film about lost souls and spiritual enlightenment without all the cloying, heavy-handed bullshit that usually goes along with it. It's absurdly funny and whimsical in the usual Anderson style but it also packs a lot of emotional wallop.

An improvement over Life Aquatic, Anderson gives us the same blend of sad drama with odd humor that he does in his other films. The scope here seems a bit reduced but it works well giving us an interesting interaction between three brothers.

Too few divergences from the usual Wes Anderson movie, but the ones that were there were nice. It's hard to rate his work because I know exactly what I'm getting and I enjoy what I get, but I would like to be surprised on occasion. Even the tense scene at the river was pretty much identical to the death scene in the Life Aquatic. However, the setting and music were amazing (I really want to visit India now).

There's not much separating it from any other Anderson outside from the beauty of the country. The symbolism is occasionally too obvious (BAGGAGE, GET IT?!) but it's still funny and great to look at and creates sympathy for the characters.

The Darjeeling Limited focuses more on drama than the absurd comedy in Wes Anderson's other films. I believe this was done by Anderson in an attempt to allow the viewer to be roped into the tragic elements of the film. However I think this back fires as I found Royal Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic's tragic elements more touching because of how silly the films were so when things took a turn for serious-ville my emotional guard had been let down. It's still good, just not Anderson's best.

Wes Anderson is starting to all feel the same to me, but that doesn't mean he's not great at what he does. Darjeeling is everything you'd expect from one of his movies. I would say not as touching as Life Aquatic's better moments, and not as funny as Rushmore, but then a part of me suspects that Anderson will never be able to top Rushmore anyways.

It's basically Anderson Does India, and while it doesn't match the heights of his best work, it's still incredibly charming and funny. The final message is a bit obvious, but the trio of screenwriters really nail the brotherly rapport between the three leads, and that alone gives the movie a huge lift. Schwartzman is terrific, and Brody proves surprisingly capable as a comedic actor. Great cinematography, and a neat cameo to start the film. "I love you too, but I'm gonna mace you in the face!"

Achingly beautiful, and very funny and endearing, The Darjeeling Limited may not be Wes Anderson's strongest film, but is still a real treat. Once again Wilson and Schwartzman thrive under Anderson's direction, and Brody makes up the trio, who have a wonderful and eclectic chemistry right through the movie. Driven by an interesting, but simple plot about relationships and self realisation with strong script, Anderson once again comes up with a moving and multi-layered off-beat near masterpiece.

The first 45 minutes is typical Anderson which is to say entertaining, awkward and uniquely humerous. It's a bit more halting then I expect from him but the movie becomes something else entirely half way through. Some genuine emotion, character growth is a nice change of pace for his work. The pacing never really works but there are more then enough strengths to make up for it.

Despite its exotic setting, The Darjeeling Limited is Anderson's most straightforward film. The world inside the film is colorful and witty--signature Wes Anderson. However, completely unlike his other films, the characters and plot of The Darjeeling Limited are neither fully developed or moving. The film, like its protagonists, wander, looking for a purpose. Still, the aesthetics are wonderful, and it is quite enjoyable.

The Kinks' "This Time Tomorrow" and "Strangers" in one movie? Soooold! To the little lady right here in front. There's a certain romanticism to a cross-country train journey that I think is difficult to capture when your main characters are being all self-aware about their own spiritual journey. The Bill Murray character is the kind of joke you spend your whole career building up to.

The Darjeeling Limited isn't awful, but it's not one that's worth seeking out unless you like seeing films set in India. Its characters are lacking, the dialogue isn't revelatory or funny, and saying that the plot meanders is being generous. It's a pleasant film, and it's not going to bore you, but it's not something that will enhance your life and it's difficult to recommend it. Do watch the short prequel, Hotel Chevalier, which can stand alone and is far better in only a tenth of the time.

The Wes Anderson film with the most emotion, this character study about three brothers in mourning stands out from the rest of Anderson's formidable oeuvre by balancing art with story in a way that puts emotional truth ahead of production design, though both are very well done.

The eccentricity is toned down enough (into a conservative avant-garde) for the idiosyncratic trio of brothers to have some emotional depth, and also for the Indian locale to breathe it's own character into the tale; not only as a source of spiritual self-discovery, which isn't successful, but as a way for the Whitman brothers to connect after a year of separation. The interaction between the brothers is particularly rich, providing much of the social satire through bursts of deadpan comedy.

It's funny but I loved Darjeeling for the same reasons that I was disappointed (initially) by The Life Aquatic: Wes Anderson is doing the same damn thing! The main difference here can be put into a formula: Schwartzman Trains India Brotherhood A Death in the Family= A film that would have to take a grandmaster to ruin, and a talented filmmaker to make near-perfect. While I expect others to consider it merely(?) great, the cards the film dealt feel like they were laid down just for me.

The Three Noses do India. Storywise it feels a bit slight, but I gotta say I really enjoyed it. It's one of those movies you wanna move into; it's so good-looking and colorful, pleasantly paced, charmingly acted: attractive in every (surface) way. There are some moments where Anderson's self-enamored style gets in the way of the film, but overall a pleasing ride that makes you wanna travel through India by train (and hook up with Rita).

Both bright and quiet, with the dazzling culture of India colliding with the inert awkwardness and existential uncertainty of these cultural outsiders. The momentum of the plot may chug along like a train in a poorer area, giving this a bit more of a piecemeal episodic structure more than something whole, but it's still an ace piece of work from Wes, a lot of brilliantly snappy dialogue and a bit of farcical humour make this funny and entertaining, while still hitting the emotional points.
