From the moment Zia (in his late 20s) cuts his wrists and enters a bizarre afterlife reserved for suicides, this film becomes a strangely uplifting, comic tale about a journey through the hereafter. It is a world where everyone still bears the scars earned from the manner in which they "offed," and the everyday reality is a twisted mirror image of our own mortal world. (Halcyon Pictures)

this movie came out of nowhere and blew me away. shannyn sossamon proves that she should really have one of the biggest names in the industry, some great writing and and even greater story.

A quiet charmer, despite the initially confronting scenes of suicide; this begins by establishing a unique, darkly comic vision of the afterlife, with Fugit, Whigham and Sossamon perfect, glum vessels to carry the mood and atmosphere. Unfortunately once the film shifts gear to more standard and familiar road movie territory, it peters out and only seems interested in engaging with its story themes in superficial (and confusing) ways, leading to an upbeat finale that the film doesn’t quite earn.

This movie included the first comedic suicide scene, I think, ever filmed. If that sentence made you smile, then you'll enjoy this movie. I can't imagine many others, though, that would. Fortunately, I fell into the smiling category, so I had a good time.

I mostly agree with Shmendrek, though I liked this a bit more. It isn't really a great movie but the concept IS interesting... the execution is just a little blah. Obviously a movie like this will be kind of low key but this goes further than that in a bad way. Still, it's got a decent script and all that.

i only ranked this movie that high, because of the great tom waits and his memorable performance. musics were also nice but other than these i didn't see anything special in it.

I thought Highway to Hell was a sweet movie. I wish I could remember what it was like so I could review it. This movie is basically Highway to Hell, except I've seen it in the last 15 years. Bowling for Leftovers! Gilbert Gottfried as Hitler! So so very funny. I'm never going to see Highway to Hell again. :(

WRISTCUTTERS: A LOVE STORY begins with an intriguingly offbeat concept about an alternative afterlife for the suicidal, and maintains the courage of its acerbic convictions. Eventually, the film loses its shape and becomes more or less a bundle of quirks, ceding its effectiveness to a drab visual palette and mounting narrative confusion. It is partially redeemed, however, by its dark comedic vision and its love of the absurd, which help set it apart from other indie films of its vintage.

The unique suicide afterlife premise here creates a fresh and fascinating atmosphere for the seen-before road trip dramedy format; bleak desert landscapes and dark city streets host a blend of moods ranging from melancholy (every character is a tragedy) to darkly comic (there's humour but no one can smile) to bizarre (the black hole in the car). Needless to say, Waits' presence on screen and in the soundtrack is a match made in heaven (or some kind of afterlife, at least). A great indie flick.

Loved this movie about people commiting suicide and ending up in a bizzare hereafter where Tom Waits is in charge. The protagonist meets up with a Yugoslav and a girl(Sossamon) who is determined to get out as her suicide was an accident. No one ever smiles in this place, they just go about their daily life and jobs. Odd, but moving.

Pretty faithful to Etgar Keret's novella "Kneller's Happy Campers," except for the happy ending, something you don't find too often in Keret's stories. Was glad the DVD included some deleted scenes, including scenes that had some of my favorites bits of dialogue from the original story.

well, if you've seen one quirky indie romance, you've seen them all, but this at least has a bit of a unique fantasy approach that takes the edge off the predictability. shame eugene hutz didn't play himself though, the dude they got had nowhere near the talent.

About 2/3rds of the way through this movie I was getting a little worried. I had liked it up until this point, but the road trip had abruptly ended and our heroes were just sitting around some compound with a bunch of nameless strangers for seemingly no reason. But then the ending came, and it was so strong and so sweet and so emotional that it made forgive the preceding bit. It's still is a jarring tonal shift, but I just don't care very much. The movie is a breath of fresh air.

Wristcutters is tedious. The dialogue feels inane, the cinematography looks cheap, and the soundtrack is annoying. These three aspects are key to any road-trip movie, and not pulling them off was a detriment to this one. That said, I liked the premise, and there were the odd quirky moments that I enjoyed, but they were far and few between. The cast is impressive, but at under 90 minutes, this film drags, which is not a good thing. Disappointing!

Good. A man ends up in dreary purgatory after offing himself where he makes friends with a Russian rocker and goes in search for his girlfriend who also killed herself, in a car with a black hole under its front seat. Yeah its strange but really wonderful for the first half but soon as they take the focus away from the Russian, it turns kinda crappy because he's really the only interesting character in the movie. Catch it on TV.

Original idea, but really scattered...this one just couldn't pull me in. I imagine that college kids feeling as though they're on the cutting edge of *something* will turn this into some kind of cult film. And so will those who smoke lot of pot. I will admit though, I turned it off right around the scene where they've woken up amidst condoms and used needles.

This wasn't phenomenal or anything, but it was a really neat concept that was well executed. Little touches like the black hole under the seat, the Gogol Bordelloish Eugene and his music, and the miracles made this stand out a little more. My only complaint is that more explanation was needed for a portion of the movie near the end, but overall this was a really nice little movie.

Top badass moment? I watched this film about two weeks ago, so I have to admit I can't remember enough to identify it now. I'm sure there was one though; probably several actually. I really should take notes. 1 cat, no chainsaws or decapitations. It's only onscreen for a few moments, but it's a cute ginger one!

A cool concept (and it is that) can only take a film so far. Wristcutters has an excellent opening and a cast of actors that I really like, but it's a movie that's generally very dull and really bogs down in the middle. It's very offbeat, and kind of reminded me of Repo Man in a way (Repo Man is *much* funnier though, and a hell of a lot more memorable). It's definitely worth a viewing for the concept alone, but feels like it could've been more.

Rewatched June 2018. Product of the 2000s' quirk boom. Disappointing to rewatch; ten years' first-hand experience with friendship, relationships, suicide, and life in general points pretty much 180 degrees from what I see here, and the film does not offer much else to chew on to mitigate that basic disapproval.

A film bristling with charm and the occasional burst of hilarity. The concept and the script are interesting in theory and well done in execution, however this film's greatest strength is the impeccably realized character, Eugene--an eccentric Russian rocker who makes the whole hipster-paradise afterlife worth the journey for anyone. So when the film strays from him to the other two leads at the end, the mesmerization dissipates and the contrivances in the plot become obvious and a little lame

Etgar Keret is famous for writing original little high-concept fantasies like this, and it is original, even as a movie adaptation: probably the only afterlife road movie in existence. Yet Wristcutters deserves no points for an originality achieved by throwing everything else to the wind. The film doesn't even follow its own fantastic logic with any sort of consistency, and is way too frilly to boot for what turns out to be a very cheesy love moral. I do give it points for the good casting.

Fine performances by a stellar cast help downplay this aburd low-budget, high-concept film. All the unique details and ideas ultimately fall to the wayside to center on a much stronger narrative in the character's relationships with one another. The film's dreary look is purposeful, a strong catalog of music backs the empty, lulling landscapes. The over-used road trip formula, while in play here, does not get in the way of the movie's tone or themes.
