An ambitious attempt to deconstruct the legendary musical figure, this film has more hits than misses. Of course it's inconsistent, which can't be avoided as different audience members are bound to be attracted to different incarnations of Dylan (as for me, I liked Blanchett a lot, didn't care much for Gere, thought the rest had their ups and downs), but on the whole it's extremely well-acted, has a strong visual appeal, and its many ventures into metaphor/poetry fit well with Dylan's style.

Haynes is one of the most visionary directors working today. Though not all the stories work perfectly, Cate Blanchett's performance and whole segment is so brilliant that makes up for what any other lack of. Even if you don't care about Dylan, the (sometimes inspired) cinematic experience is worth it.

Todd Haynes has a courageous film without a lot of meat on its bones. The performances are great - Bale, Ledger and Blanchett are all very interesting to watch, but the movie isn't. The film is a running collage, like looking through a photo album without any subtext or chronology or point of destination. Yes, Dylan's life is a bizarre journey, but the movie makes no sense of him and taught me nothing new about the man. That the movie does nothing more than wander supposedly makes it genius.

I really wanted to love this movie, but I just don't know what to make of it. I can't tell if it's expertly crafted or just rambling and incoherent. Maybe if I knew more about Dylan I would have gotten more out of this, but it was all just too artsy for me. Still, there are some great performances and beautiful shots in here. Blanchett, Bale, and Ledger all really shone I think. In the end it was too frustrating for me to call a great movie, but I give it points for being totally original.

Somewhere along the line between pretentious and genius. For the most part I think the concept is pulled off well, with some good casting and virtuoso editing. This film really is a masterpiece of editing, boasting quick, strong cuts and never stumbling over its own looping plots. I'm not sure the movie is doing Dylan any justice though, apart from just mystifying him even more. It also overstays its welcome by about 20 minutes. Dylan fans will appreciate this on a different level than me.

I'm not entirely sure what I think of this film. It's an intriguing conceit, but I'm not sure the film stands up to any more rigorous analysis. It's certainly interesting to watch, but ultimately it seems to rely heavily on nostalgia. It seems to mystify and deify Dylan, but when it's considered more closely it often seems rather empty and meaningless. Perhaps I'll change this score in the future after watching it again.

Not so much about Bob Dylan as his mythos, and the enigma that comes with people so intimately tied to our cultural identity. At a certain point, a person becomes an idea, and the incarnations in this film are true to that sense. At the same time, such abstraction can be excessive, and some of the content here is a little too strange for its own good. It's still quite solid, and Cate Blanchett is better than ever.

Here's my problem with I'm Not There: it makes no fucking sense. And that is to say, I'm sure in some way I could figure it out, but it's already uninteresting enough, I don't even care to put the puzzle together. Or does it not even take a Lynch-like approach, does it rather just take some random images and shuffle them to make an incoherent mess? Which is supposed to perfectly capture Bob Dylan and therefore be a stroke of genius. Bull. ...Blanchett is fantastic, though.

Definitely more entertaining for large fans of Bob Dylan who know some of the mythos around him. All the actors that play him throughout the film are fantastic which helps the viewer get through the fact that this movie can be a mess at times. I definitely think this is done way better than a standard biopic for him would have been (aka start small, get some fame, do drugs, have a lot of sex, get incredibly famous, hit bottom, clean up their act).

As layered and fascinating as the man whose life its fragments depict, here's an engrossing and unconventional biopic. Haynes, instead of opting for the typical 'greatest hits' run-through of the artist's life and career, approaches Dylan -and the biography genre- in a unique and uncompromising manner, while aided by a terrific cast and sharp camerawork. And if ultimately the film is more baffling than enlightening, it only does justice to Zimmerman's enigmatic yet undeniably compelling persona.

I don't know Bob Dylan. I like his music sometimes. I don't understood some details, but I liked this film. There are fictional characters in the film. it's an original idea. This original viewpoint like a poetic biography. This film isn't biography. it's actually an imaginary life story. it's very dynamic, extremely attractive and compelling, so it's very good documentary.

There's interesting ideas here, but it turns out those ideas don't really work well in execution. It's too disjointed, and a sense of a single person that would link these characters together is never really achieved. The only real thing it does is make Dylan come off as a dick at times, and I'm guessing that's probably not what was intended.

Certainly an interesting artistic experiment, though I found it a little too convoluted to be a really rewarding experience. One of the best biopics ever. An inventive trip into the mind of Bob Dylan that simultaneously takes us through cinema history, with Haynes weaving together the likes of Fellini, Lester, Scorsese and more into a wild, unruly film that throws everything at the wall and hopes at least a little bit sticks. The film's heart and soul is Cate Blanchett, whose near-perfect performance bolsters the strongest part of the script.

Half of the score goes to the soundtrack (the one thing that can't be ruined in a movie about Dylan), the other half to Christian Bale. these were the only things keeping some connection with the man. Okay, I get it, it's not supposed to be "just another biopic", but it should still be coherent in some way, right? Havn't heard so much trying-to-be-philosophical babble since Wings of Desire. And the part with Richard Gere was downright ridiculous in any standart.

All respects to Bob Dylan's music, the movie itself was technically very well done and I liked the concept of the story. A great movie that tells not only Dylan's story, but rather a spectacular character progression that I believe many people will be able to corelate to. It also delves into what I understand it to be the Dylan's view on the world, and how it changed over the course of his life. The only short side is that even I, as a Dylan fan, had to watch movie twice to make some real sense, but for cautious eyes, there are so many surprises and hints in the movie it's really a beautiful experience.

I found I'm Not There to be boring and on the side of pretentious. I liked the idea of the movie, telling the story of Bob Dylan's life through segments starring lots of different people that relate to his style, but ultimately it didn't really have anything driving it as his life, as impressive as his music may be, is relatively boring compared to a lot of other musicians.

With its several layers, complex stories and dreamy storytelling, this movie needs a manual to digest completely. if you don't know what actually happened in reality, you have difficulty following the course of events. Dylan's eccentriticies seems to have passed on to Bale, Blanchett and Whishaw, but not Gere and Ledger who just couldn't pull it off.

First of all, Cate Blanchett (Jude) was fantastic in this film. Todd Haynes gets quite experimental with the narrative structure of this film. While all based on Bob Dylan, he breaks different parts of Dylan's life into literally different characters. Some of these characters get a lot more screen time and more importance than others, which works with Blanchett and not so much for Richard Gere (Billy). The film is an ambitious, albeit a bit meandering, portrayal of an oft ambiguous artist.

Supporting Dylan in his own myths, this movie made it plausible why a loved man would prefer to be cynical. However no character has his real name which worked confusing to me. The girl who looks like Joan Baez, is she supposed to be her? Or is she the symbal of 'the folk / protest girl'? I dreamt of this one, that's enough reason for a good rating.

An experimental and original biopic. It's about Bob Dylan, but it could be about anyone. It feels like five mini-biographies of five different people, but they all represent one aspect or one defining moment in the life of a man. The most interesting segment is the 60's scene Dylan, played by Cate Blanchet. It's beautifully shot and the character is fascinating. The film is over long, though, and by the end I wasn't hypnotized anymore.

A trippy, poetic tribute to Bob Dylan. The movie is hard to follow and a little pretentious, no one speaks a line of dialogue that doesn't have some kind of philosophical meaning. It grates a little, but the film has some great moments and some unique performances by Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett. Needless to say, considering the source material, the soundtrack to the movie is amazing.

I love Bob Dylan, but just couldn't get into this. It felt too self-consciously artsy, cold and disjointed. Bob Dylan's poetry & prose were rich with fairly transcendental, deep pathos & kalaidoscopic facets of the human experience, so this format should have been apropos, but somehow it was very aloof and clinical; it didn't feel real, it didn't absorb me even as much as the quarantine cell cam Princess Bride remix of a similar style.

A peculiar biopic more about Dylan's personas than the real character. Some of the shots (especially with Blanchett, who makes a spooky doppelganger) appear to be pulled straight out of Dont Look Back, even though they aren't. And then there are others that put the masters of surrealism to shame. It probably bears a second watch; the music should pull you in even if the warped storyline makes you wonder if it's worth it.
