As with "Izganie", features long pauses that don't really push the story forward, and much like NathanDarko, I couldn't get into the drama (it's too bleak and trite to really appreciate it). There's a level of greatness that's fairly visible. You have to dig very deep though in order to embrace it, but if the director didn't lift a finger to ease that process, than why should I... I mean, wake up !!!

Stylish, ambitious... and yet, somehow, uninteresting. There are pacing issues and they are quite possibly to blame for my unengagement in the drama between the characters. Or perhaps it's the other way around?

Loved those transitions between scenes with use of the surrounding sounds to connect them. And the way plot shifts from one character to another. Aesthetically just stunning. But story flow is too slow. Like waiting for the most beautiful flower to bloom... And waiting... And waiting. Is it me, or it never even fully blossomed?

Beautiful cinematography and a very interesting angle on its initial set-up, but I'm getting the feeling Nuri Bilge Ceylan ain't for me. I'm not sure if something's lost through the subtitles, but the dialogue seemed particularly uncharacteristic and dull (as well as the acting) and a lot of the paths and turns the story took seemed ridiculous and took me out of the film.

(Viewed on 08/06/14): Three Monkeys was in some respects a warm up for Once Upon a Time In Anatolia with its ambiguous genre leanings, corrupt male authority figures and its meditative musings on the problem of truth. It's smaller in scope, less ambitious and thoughtful than that film, and the performances aren't of the same caliber. Nonetheless, Ceylan knows how to brood, and there is enough atmosphere in Three Monkeys to keep fans engaged, even if it doesn't quite scale his usual heights.

Not his best, but most methodical & stylized work.. I still think the first part and second part of the movie are discordant.

Like the other Ceylan films I've seen, it's done very well with a style that appeals to me, but seems to lack something. It's an interesting story with interesting moments and interesting choices... but I can't help but feel a little "meh" about the whole thing. I don't know what Ceylan is driving at, and I'm not sure he knows either. I still like it, I just don't love it. I guess Ceylan is going to be one of those kind of directors for me.

An example of how a weak story with cliched scenarios can be uplifted to great heights with mastery in craftsmanship.

Beautifully bleak. I loved the transitions between scenes using sound, Ceylan's extraordinary use of light, and the elliptical editing that pushes "important" scenes to mere background in favor of the more significant drama going on within the family. I did think the second half was more effective than the first, playing as a kind of psychological horror film--everyone was completely unpredictable. And the final scene as a cap to this film shows what the Coen's A Serious Man could have been.

Emotional resonance is only mildly achieved through some so-so direction and the bare minimum of character development. Nothing seems fully developed.

Fairly run-of-the-mill psychodrama. The setup is decent enough, but it tacks on too many telenovela elements (even an entirely superfluous brother/son who died as a kid for crying out loud) and the ending is unmotivated.

Exploring the effects of a family's dealings with an underhanded politician, this crime drama avoids showing the violent outcomes of its characters' misdeeds, resulting in a lingeringly potent film.

Very "standard European film" if that makes sense, don't know how to describe what I mean really. Anyways, some pretty visuals and good enough. Milf's ringtone was hilarious.

I suspect most film-makers could have told this tale in 20 minutes. But then, it wouldn't have had the soporific qualities Ceylan's film does, filled with interminable silences while characters stare moodily into space or at each other. On the plus side, it looks amazing, the frames become painterly scenes packed with detail. And the story is easy enough to follow, even if it leads nowhere. There are some poetic and expressive moments, but mostly all the silences and pauses are a chore to watch.

great cinematography with a strangely tempting color palette but unnecessarily long silences and stares are simply boring... hatice aslan is disappointing in so many ways; can`t act, does not fit the movie and she is definitely a bad choice for a low socioeconomic level MILF character with her porcelaine teeth, stylishly cut hair and nice clothes...rifat sungar is brilliant by the way

"If you're looking for an adultery- and revenge-fueled family melodrama so subdued that it keeps a hit-and-run fatality, cuckoldry, and murder entirely off screen, Three Monkeys is your movie and Nuri Bilge Ceylan your not-so-genre-inclined auteur." - Bill Weber

Nuri Ceylan delivers another amazing movie. After being really impressed by Climates, I had high hopes and wasnt disappointed. He has a style of presentation which can either make you really like his movies or not. The acting, direction, story and script are all great. The choice of music that plays in the background sits perfectly with the movie. The actors dont go dramatically overboard. Really must watch for people who like drama and seriousness. The ending is perfect a must watch.

Could very easily have been a melodrama, if it weren't for Ceylan directing it with his typical picturesque photography and minimal dialogue. His long, sometimes painfully drawn-out silences allow the actors to communicate through facial expression, which is where the film shines. One complaint is that I thought the politician's character was flat and displayed no hint of any likable trait, which creates a certain plausibility issue by some point.

Ceylan's cinematographic mastery can already be seen here. The sound transitions are very well made. The elliptic way of telling the story too. Unfortunately, it's hard to see where the story goes. I though it would be an analysis of how the wealthy and powerful can corrupt the working class, but the woman's behavior doesn't quite fit then. I'm left perplexed by what Ceylan wants to tell us...
