Captures the confused, seedy tone of MacDonald better than the first film does.

Forgettable movie. Watched this a few years ago and don't remember much except Melanie Griffith being young but strangely unappealing and most of the women not wearing bras because it was the 70's.

If it weren't for the watery last act, which makes it kinda worthwhile, this would have been a fairly forgettable neo-noir.

This is a good film. This one is almost as good as the first film in the series. Newman seems to play this character with ease.

coming nine years after it's predecessor it joins the scene a little late, but nevertheless it churns out a fairly enjoyable movie, mostly due to newman's...well, newman-ness, and some damned fine source material. if you had to choose watch harper over this one, otherwise this is pretty fair game for anyone.

Entertaining, witty (and bafflingly underrated) detective movie, with Newman in fine laconic form. Brisk, amusing direction and a wonderful, slimy, campy turn in support by Murray Hamilton, make this "the sort of movie they don't make anymore." Highly recommended for all but especially genre fans, or fans of later day Paul Newman. Love the sequence which reveals the meaning of the title as well. Great stuff.

The story was worth for filming, but come on. It was so slow. The output was easily forgettable. Tighter pacing and shorter running time would do a lot for the story.
