listen pal, you can't just waltz in here, use my toaster and start spouting universal truths without qualification.

It's not just the short running time, Surviving Desire is fat-free, it is Hartley at his purest and most condensed. He gets the most out of his usual shtick that I've seen him get. There is a lot of quirky amusement to enjoy and that Rohmerian ploy where the characters weave the plot through constant self and mutual analysis, works better than ever.

One of the best of the 90s. Just world-class screenwriting.

I liked everything that didn't involve Mary Ward, who is terrible.

For me, Hartley's deadpan musings aren't quite so effective when being spouted by intellectuals (and wannabes), or perhaps Martin Donovan isn't quite the right fit for the lead--I normally absolutely love him. Matt Malloy, on the other hand, is fantastic... he finds the perfect mode of delivery for his nuggets of, um, "wisdom". The bartender gets one of the best lines of the flick, and the dance is hilarious.

BlurayRip R.A.R.B.G.

More profound and truthful than every Tarkovsky and Bergman film combined.

Hartley's lyrical screenplay is a breath of fresh air, riffing and improving upon standard romantic comedy tropes in smart, unpretentious fashion. The dialogue really shines with a capable actor like Martin Donovan, although a more competent female lead would elevate the material even further.

Fantastic. I very much appreciate the tension between knowledge and faith--it's clear here that to know anything requires some measure of faith. Dare we say "trust"?

Not as good as Trust, but if you really loved that film, this is worth checking out. ps68
