Christmas on Mars

A rewatch on Christmas Day! Christmas on Mars is a movie that finds beauty in its ugliness, wearing the cobbled-together sets and silly makeup as a badge of DIY honor. With no budget and a big vision, Mars tells a classic Christmas story of hope and fellowship in a way driven entirely by imagination.

The Flaming Lips brings DIY backyard cinema to the new heights. Well, that is what I was hoping for. In reality, their micro-budget psychedelic nonsense is far from enjoyable or interesting. Imagine the bastard child of Carpenter's Dark Star and Lynch's Eraserhead, that no one wants to play with. There are so many vaginas in this film, yet so little fruits of creative labor. Extremely disappointing.

Very enjoyable, but unfortunately not quite what it was hyped up to be... I was expecting something incredible...

I wanted to love this. I'm a huge Flaming Lips fan and they exhibit great creative powers in their music and live performances, but this just isn't that special. It's weird, but not weird enough. It's funny, but it's also loaded with unfunny stuff (the Captain was horrible with his half-assed potty-mouthed drill seargeant shtick). Aside from some cool visual moments, it's pretty dull. The music is kind of neat, though. It'll be a long time if I ever watch this again.
