I can't believe so few people have seen this. A beautiful, slow-paced telling of the story is only part of the enjoyment I got out of this film. Character development, the adventures, all of this makes this wonderful.

Holy. Shit. Alternately disturbing and powerfully life-affirming, yet Shiota's storytelling is impeccably subtle and genuine. Great performances by the kids, and effective camerawork by Yutaka Yamasaki (who is Kore-eda's right-hand man). If you liked "Nobody Knows" (and who didn't?), I very strongly recommend this, but really, this is a must-watch among the past decade's Japanese films.

weird, grouchy, flat, unsympathetic characters. cheap claustrophobic shakey hand-held tv-movie cinematography. dull, lifeless imagery. feels 10x longer than it is. a real turd. gets better around the 75% mark when they finally introduce some other characters, but by then it's too late. wish they would've just ran this asshole kid over with a bus and saved me two hours.

Solid drama but it feels kind of stiff and doesn't really excel cinematography/acting/story-wise compared to other great Japanese films
