'Everything is uncertain when we talk about falling in love or being in love... the intensity is the only thing that counts... you can't just guess how much a feeling lasts...?!' It's difficult to imagine that a movie like that would came out of Woddy Allen's mind... I mean, not in that explicit way... but it works, and very well...

Not one of Woody's best efforts. It's a fine movie just not as great as you might've heard. The voice over narration is awful and really annoying and unnecessary most of the time. Penelope Cruz has never looked better and her acting is incredible. Bardem is good too. Everything is nice to look at but the story is just kind of meh. It's more disappointing cause of everyone saying that this is Woody coming back to form (but he never lost his form).

The film explores the very parameters of love and sex, the hopes and expectations built into relationships. It does this with a shrewd and prevalent cynicism. It doesn't take sides or argue a point. Instead, it puts the characters in motion and watches their travails. The only sound conclusion it puts forth is that nothing works. Allen shows again that some of the greatest moviemaking thrills can be achieved by honestly and efficiently plumbing into the messiness of the human psyche.

If I didn't know the names in the credits I would have thought this is a no-budget student film. Except for Cruz, who delivered an excellent performance, this film failed to capture my interest. The last bit of atmosphere the actors were able to create was killed by the narrator.

Take a generic Spanish romance of gorgeous people fucking each other in exotic locations and filter it through a Woody Allen lens of gentle cynicism towards / fixation on love, erudite conversation about art and culture, and neurotic characters. Or character, at least, in Rebecca Hall's Vicky, who I found the most appealing in the film. Bardem and Cruz are also very good. A very solid if unremarkable bit of late summer entertainment.

Woody Allen's best film of the 2000s by a country mile, it absolutely drips with atmosphere. I felt almost drunk off of the wine the characters were sipping in every second scene. The dialogue, the characters, everything felt so vintage Allen but in a modern setting. Exquisite.

The most bearable allen i have seen so far. Which means the continuous voice over narration and seemingly endless dialog didn't bother me as much this time. There's a neat playfulness at its core, especially with the different types and expectations when it comes to love. The actors are well cast, embodying their respective phenotypes flawlessly.

Ah, Barcelona! This could just be a walking tour of the city and it'd be better than average. Seductive at first. Convincing if you play along. Deceptive when you start to think. The question then is, keep thinking, or remaining in that place? I couldn't stop myself, analytic as I am cursed to be, but then I have to ask: is this film misogynistic? Other reviewers disdainfully, and wrongfully, call it a "chick flick". I guess they just don't see the opportunities. (Btw, it's very funny too!)

Exactly what you'd expect from Woody Allen imagining himself as a 20-year-old girl visiting Europe. Scarlett Johansson shines, while the other characters are entertaining if not entirely believable. The whirlwind romance has a fairytale feel to it, reminding us that this story is not based in reality but in Allen's fantasies. It looks very seductive and classy, but it's a portrait of Europe as only an American could see it. Fun, if taken with a pinch of salt.

with its postcard locations, unrealistically dreamy characters and exotics, the movie starts off with a plastic feeling, like it is engineered for the middleclass working women in the us. fortunately it develops into an intriguing and daring story about relationships, all thanks to the inclusion of Cruz, who is absolutely enchanting through and through. Allen kinda pisses me off, but you gotta hand it to the man about bringing out the best in actors.

Despite lame narration, this is consistently alluring and well-acted. Javier Bardem really draws you into this movie, a movie I can't quite put a finger on. Perhaps that's why it's a Woody Allen film. The film never allowed me to label Bardem and Cruz's characters, but they are fun to watch. It's a neat little romantic dramedy, often weird, but a very relaxed film that goes down like a single glass of wine. It doesn't move you or blow you away, but it's pleasantly interesting for 90 minutes.

It was probably a bad idea to make this be my first Woody Allen movie. I never had any interest in this film from the start with the whole narrator thing. I had a hard time buying Bardem in this role after No Country. To make things worse my date really didn't like it either, and she was the reason we watched it. At least you can say this movie ends with a bang. If this is supposed to be one of Allen's better films, then I am not going to be a fan of any of them. Bonus points for Cruz.

It picks up a bit in the latter stages with the dynamic between Cristina and Maria Elena, but that's where Vicky becomes an afterthought. There were some things that I really liked, some things I didnt and things I found to be troubling in a good way. It bothered me that the narrative skipped over things that I a) thought wouldnt make sense if depicted; effectively Allen taking the easy way out and b) I would have liked to see; things just kind of glossed forward. Alternatively, perhaps Allen drew on his experience in strangely unconventional relationships to create the one featured in the film. Vicky's dialogue was bad tho.

Bardem and Johanssen are great; the rest of the movie is pretty middling. I want to see Bardem in more romantic leading roles now. Thing is, the plot is too thin and Rebecca Hall simply cannot make Allen's intellectual bon mots seem natural. Still, the locations, and the women, and the photography, and the music are beautiful, and for 110 minutes, this really flies by. I think what we've got on our hands is a dead shark, but that doesn't mean it wasn't fun to swim around with it for a while.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona is a good movie, but fails to be a great one because of a single element that took me out of the experience far more than it needed to. Remove the narrator, and add about 15 minutes of footage that has the characters either acting or talking about what the narrator explains to us, and you do have a great movie. It's well acted, has great writing and the cinematography is, at times, breathtaking. I wish it had been even better, but as it is, it's an enjoyable watch.

There is something unlikeable about all the characters in this film to the point that I don't like the film. I should state that unlikeable characters are not inherently bad for a film, it's just that they are more difficult to realise than likeable characters. I have no issues with the morals, ethics etc. of these characters they just annoy me by their presence. But maybe I need to watch it again.

The script is decent without much to say but the direction and scenery got my attention from the beginning, along with Rebecca Hall. The supporting cast is also good, with the excellent Patricia Clarkson at the helm. Josep Maria Domenech was also very good. Undoubtedly "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" is an entertaining study on human relationships.

The narrator was also a mystery to me, but in a way it's a fresh and amuzing addition. The story is a bit too predictive and cheesy, but it goes with the flow. A pleasant movie.

Fresh, dark, and seductive, this movie was quite brilliantly simplistic. I love the characters, especially Maria Elena, and really felt for her and Juan Antonio's volatile relationship. Well done, Mr. Allen.

Lovely scenery, but that was the most interesting part. Characters were overused stereotypes, and the film was an obvious vehicle for Allen's fantasies. At least the ending was slightly unusual for Hollywood.

a pretty dry outing from allen, it's a decent story, with an up to par script, but nothing on the level he's attained earlier in his career. this one doesn't really give you anything to sink your teeth into, which is sad because at it's heart it's got the essence of a allen movie, but none of that allen spark.

I thought this wouldn't be my type of movie (I would best describe it as a Cynical Romance), but I became very attached to the story thanks to the tight script and solid performances. Cruz' Oscar win was well-deserved!
