Some heartfelt scenes that felt awfully real due to Demme's handheld style..these were great. Now, what was up with that wedding? I think I saw Mr. Fuji and Nikolai Volkoff in there. Who KNOWS people like this?! In this yuppie universe of feel-goodery, everyone is a musician or an "artiste" who carries an air of contrived, "effortless" cool. No data entry clerks or UPS drivers here. The unbearable reception morphed into a hip hop dancing video at some point, to the detriment of the actual story.

Melodrama with neorealist trappings. Squanders goodwill fostered by the naturalistic performances and barbed comedy via an interminable wedding coda and pat resolution. Depreciates in the rearview, too.

My favorite Anne Hathaway performance (an I've seen a few) by far. Although I think I understand what it represented I didn't think they needed to show so much of the music at the reception. Irwin just blew me away with how he tried to hold things together and just have everyone happy. Oh and that whole dishwasher scene was pretty creative. I know it is cliche'ish but this story was real, from the way the characters interacted to its conclusion.

Yup, I bought it hook, line, and sinker. For me this was really emotional and touching. There were a lot of little details -- looks, touches -- that really pulled at the heartstrings for me. I liked the filming style and thought it made it all the more intense. I could feel the pain of every character involved and felt like I was there. My only complaint was that the wedding itself got a wee bit out of hand. I was waiting for Cirque du Soleil to show up. Loved it though.

(2nd viewing) Like watching a wedding tape, not since the first act of "The Deer Hunter" has a wedding party, with the audience being the guest of honour, felt so unfeigned. The performances by every single actor transcend the film's low-budget look. One of Demme's finest films and even better the 2nd time around.

Hathaway gives an Oscar worthy performance and the story is hauntingly believable and real. Usually this shaky handycam stuff annoys the hell out of me but it worked really well here. Think of it as a wedding video - that's what I think Demme was going for at least. It has this unusual energy that is hard to explain but most films would benefit from it. Also, Anne Hathaway is so hot even as a druggie, I love her.

The best thing about this film is how real it feels. Demme constantly makes you feel that you are not watching a film, but actually on screen. That being said, the film is a bit hard to watch because of the strong emotions that come through and most of the cast do a great job of conveying those emotions. It's blunt honesty in depicting a real life situation make it very real and emotion inducing, but just like real life everything is not always super exciting.

"With all do respect sir, you dont know shit about loading a dishwasher." Anne Hathaway was stunning, but simply put this just wasnt really my cup of tea. Its not the movie I would see again, but I see what people found so great about it (though I also get the complaints about it being drawn out). It is also probably one of the saddest movies I ever saw, so sad I had to do something else to distract myself while watching.

Great performances, a career best for Hathaway, in a simple tale of an everyday dysfunctional family going through a wedding. The simple format and the focus of the director of filming everything in the style of a typical amateur wedding filmographer, leaves the focus on the tensions within the family. It's formidable how well it manages to make the viewer feel like a family member eavesdropping on conversations they probably weren't meant to hear. Wedding itself a bit too stupidly Bohemian.

Anne Hathaway is completely annoying and horrible here, and that's exactly the point. There are plenty of likeable characters here otherwise, and there are a number of touching moments in the film. The wedding itself felt very drawn out, and it wouldn't have been a shame to see 10-15 minutes shaved off of the movie as a whole.

Life of the upper class American family gets catalysed by the return of problem daughter from the rehab to celebrate the wedding of her sister. If you dont mind looking at the spoiled grownups whining about how their feelings are hurt by anything - watch it. Technical package looks good. Use of digital video help to increase the feel of realism. Demme does a good job as you would except from experienced professional. I just couldn't connect to the story or characters in any way.

Hathaway's performance is indeed excellent and the characters are largely realistically depicted, but the entire time I was watching the movie I was irritated by the music and the tackiness of the wedding. The writing and the editing were the standouts here. Demme's handheld camera also managed to be insightful while avoiding the trap of inducing motion sickness. The film manages to build its characters slowly, as we learn little bits about them to further complicate our picture of them. In that sense they are wonderfully human, especially the two sisters. They inspire compassion, even as they engage in some outlandishly selfish behavior.

There are no shortage of dysfunctional families in the annals of film. Directors like Jonathan Demme--who brings an observant delicacy to his work, a commitment to emotional honesty and an abundant insight--are, on the other hand, a true rarity. Rachel Getting Married is a quiet marvel, a film with a simple, largely unremarkable premise that wrings trenchant truths out the familial skirmishes contained within. By the end, all of these people onscreen are fully knowable to us.

I can totally get people turned off by this. It is melodramatic, often very uncomfortable, and hipster as fuck. I love it for these reasons and for Demme's approximation of Dogme 95 in such an intrusive way. This family has gone through some heavy stuff and here is day to celebrate and try to ignore that heavy stuff that is weighing them all down. It comes across very genuine, even in one of the most unbelievable looking weddings.

Difficult movie. I'm not sure if the jumpy edits and handheld camera helped with realism, or just added to the discomfort. Very cringeworthy dialog, not in a badly-written way, but because it is believable. Past trauma in the family is revealed in a realistic way but weirdly it seems like a tragedy from ten years ago has never been dealt with at all. We feel these people should know better, and be able to do better, due the backdrop of obvious and almost annoying privilege.

Fully utilizing director Demme's skillful naturalistic approach, a sharply written and keenly observant script and of course exceptional performances from Hathaway, DeWitt, Irwin and Wagner, "Racher Getting Married" becomes a deeply engrossing as well as heart-piercing relationship drama. Deliberately unappealing and unnattractive family drama is exceptionally well performed (though Hathaway takes the first act to become truly convincing). The dysfuntional family dynamic is established very well, leading to some convincingly painful familial exchanges - it's just a shame that (like its lead character) the film insists on keeping its audience at a chilly distance (with some nausea inducing cinematography to boot). Marks a welcome return to the movie screen for Winger.

Very well done movie with solid acting and the handheld camera, while occasionally distracting, usually helps the film. It's a very character driven movie, though, and I have to admit I found the main characters rather unlikeable and the background characters annoyingly quirky. So while I appreciate the commentary on human relationships, it's not really the package I'd prefer to see this commentary in.

There are scenes where the emotions are so raw that you feel like an intruder, and those improvised camera angles heighten the effect. Similarly, there are scenes of great awkwardness that leave the viewer begging to be set free from the discomfort. I have said for a long time that one of the most dangerous things in the world is an open mike at a wedding reception, and there is a moment at a rehearsal dinner when Kym takes the mike and illustrates it perfectly.

Here and there bordering on (excessive) melodrama, but mostly just a damn fine drama with exceptional perfomances all way round, a (rare) motivated use of handheld camera and a superb script. One of those complex family dramas - in fact so weighty is the psychological baggage toted by this cast of characters, that it might occupy 10 therapists for 20 years. It all feels quite real and convincing though, and the usual rehab clichés are neatly avoided. Intimate camerawork is Baumbach-like, though a bit heavy-handed when foreshadowing plot devices. The uber-hip friends and family might get on your nerves a bit. Still, an engrossing and solemn family portrait with a fine original script.

While I liked this movie, I feel that women may LOVE it. It kinda feels like it was made for them, not for me. The AA meetings specifically stand out as great in my mind. Hathaway really sells that she's really trying to be helped by the program, and that it's working. Quite frankly I can't remember the last time I've seen this done effectively on film. However, some of the scenes run long for no discernible reason. The rehearsal dinner scene(s) were especially bad. Overall, a good movie.

An often heartbreaking descent into dysfunction from Jonathan Demme with a uniformly excellent cast. It's not uplifting or jovial, but it's blunt and honest. Anne Hathaway earns her Oscar nomination completely, and I think the rest of the actors and actresses here do great work as well. God/Love/Music (the holy trinity) conquers all at the world's most Bohemian wedding. There's some really touching stuff here; I love the house as a character, the implicit history and familiarity they all have with it, and the family dynamics and melding are really well played. The major weakness is probably the direct exposition itself, and the connective tissue to get from point to point (aka: salon scene). Wish I'd thought to employ Cyro Baptista and a samba line at my own wedding, durnit.

Jonathan Demme continues his downward spiral. He decided to make a wannabe-Altman movie, with the same sort of large cast, loose structure, and perpetually floating camera (Robert Altman is thanked in the end credits); it turned out every bit as mediocre as Altman's work usually was. Also, having received quite a lot of crap for being brainy and never having even tried so much as tobacco in my entire life, does anybody mind if I have no sympathy at all for drug addicts?

You can feel the Dogme 95 influence that motivated Demme's directorial approach in a wonderful way. This was written by Sidney Lumet's daughter, Jenny Lumet. There's a lump in your chest, in your throat (and who knows where else?), when 'Rahcel Getting Married' reaches you. It's got rare intensity, and it made my eyes sore. Understandably, I would credit mainly the acting, for convincing me a lot. Rachel Getting Married is one of those artsy-fartsy movies where the director (and writer) intends to make you feel like you're actually a part of a wedding and ceremony. Sure, the movie does analyze each primary character quite effectively, and by the end of the movie, you DO feel as if you know each quite well and understand what motivates them.
