Really fascinating, interesting take on quite possibly the most hated president in American history. Surprisingly, Stone doesn't produce a film that relies heavily on vitriol and instead shows a man who just wants to please his father. It shows a man who is decent at heart, but horribly unqualified for his job. More could have been documented in the film and Newton does a horrible job as Rice, but overall it is a highly entertaining and disturbing look behind the curtain.

With the production value being very low, I want to declare W. as one of the best TV movies you'll ever see. The first hour was a complete bore, but the film redeems itself in its second hour, notably because of Josh Brolin's phenomenal turn as the US president. His rise to Commander in Chief and the events that followed ultimately left me a bit saddened, a story that could've easily been prevented if it wasn't for his entourage of contemptible politicians and a strong case of "daddy issues"...

There is too much to say about W. Written almost like a Shakespearean tragedy and acted & directed brilliantly (save for the awful Thandie Newton), W. is far from what you might expect from Stone. It's a balanced and fair portrayal of Bush from his earlier years to his presidency, and watching the former become the latter is almost surreal. In fact, it's easy to be nearly sympathetic to old W. Watching the events of the Iraq invasion isn't as angering so much as it is tragic. Well done.

Filmmakers & historians face the same problem with covering Presidents: it takes decades to comprehend their lasting impact on the world. And in creating a dramatic movie character Stone also has to navigate Dubya's worst quality--his lack of internal consternation, reflection, and self-examination. Still, the subplot of a child trying to get respect from an emotionally distant parent is compelling. And Brolin is amazing, just like he was in Milk. Recommended even with a few road bumps.

Enjoyable drama and thankfully to see Stone bounce back from the overly melodrama World Trade Center. Paints Bush not as a tyrant but a naive man who surrounds himself with people that tell him what to do. Whether this is true or not I suppose is debatable but any way you look at it I think it's clear by now he's a poor president. The performances are fantastic from everyone, especially Brolin and Dreyfuss. My only real complaint were the symbolic baseball moments. They just felt out of place.

Stone goes back inside the Oval Office with a film that juxtaposes Bush's early exploits with the defining moment of his presidency: the lead-in to the Iraq War. Famous for his wild conspiracies, Stone dials it down and serves up the facts* as Shakespearean tragedy (*with one scene of major conjecture, but it's plausible, and I forgive it for being the movie's best scene). The cast is excellent, Brolin and Dreyfuss especially. It feels too long in spots, but is still fascinating and very funny.

Brolin does a good Bush - he looks different, but nails the voice, faces, and general vibe. Dreyfuss and Wright's Cheney and Powell are excellent too, and several individual moments fascinate. But the big picture and overall narrative is messy; too jumbled and structureless for its own good.

What happens when an outspoken filmmaker realizes the most hated American leader in decades is just human? Probably the most misunderstood film in Stone's career; this film shows real maturity with the material, but because its audience goes into the film with a predisposition, it is guaranteed to disappoint the jaded in either political direction. Brolin deserved accolades for this role, but Newton's a joke, like she stumbled onto a MADTV sketch and not a nuanced character portrait.

The sheer absurdity of this whole premise kept me enthralled throughout the picture. While the writing is occasionally off the mark due to a devotion to actual words of the people being portrayed, the direction, performances, and editing are fantastically done. Like with all Stone movies, it ain't about facts; it's about telling a good story.

W. works and I enjoyed it at its human level, even if it is all a little too convenient. The film is not a complete criticism of the former President, and it gets credit for that. It would have been easy to take the most controversial president in recent memory and try to take down his image at every point, but the film is smarter than that. It has some great performances and impersonations of real people, and as a drama, it works. I recommend giving it a look.

Very underrated. A great bio of President Bush. The film mainly focuses on his life before politics and does a great job at it. WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD: People I've talked to don't understand the ending. The way I interpreted it was that throughout Bush's whole life he's been searching for whatever it is he's looking for, and in the end he still hasn't found it. Hence the ball getting lost in the sky.

Entertainingly made, and though it's impossible to go into it without prejudice, it will soften some opinions on Bush due to its fairly objective take on the events. It portrays him as a human being, which is not how many would like to remember him, but is only fair. The real stars though were the 5 or 6 heavyweight actors playing Bush's advisors. Stone has done better - but also much worse.

It's unclear whether or not this is supposed to be funny. That's never a good sign. The film also tries to be profound or insightful, which is okay, but it just takes the easy way out. On about 3 key character issues regarding the former President the film basically says "X IS BECAUSE OF Y, END OF STORY." Example: "GEORGE W. BUSH BECAME PRESIDENT BECAUSE HE NEVER EARNED THE RESPECT OF HIS FATHER." Come on. That's just pedestrian crap. I felt talked down to as an audience member.

Interesting more than it is entertaining. It decides to portray the characters as humans who are driven by the best of intentions, even if their decisions are not what you'd agree with... oh, and who knows how much is true, but really, who cares?

Empathy is not sympathy. This movie explains a little bit about why George W. Bush is the way he is and does the things he does, but that doesn't mean the film excuses it and lets him off the hook. There is definite value to this film as a character study, but is ultimately unsatisfying by not taking a stronger position.

I enjoyed it as I watched it, but... a film that leans so heavily on caricatures, and whose plot is made up of the SNL sketches and conspiracy theories I'm already well aware of, and a film full of nonsensical imagery and misplaced dialogue... no. This just wasn't a good film at all. They had so much potential here, and it ended up looking lazy and thin.

Like _Nixon_, this is a bit kinder a portrait than I would have wanted. It's also not as good a film. However, it is interesting in that it's an all-star-cast major release that's about a pathetic failure. At least Tricky Dick could be mistaken for a statesman once in a while. I find it thoroughly watchable, never noticed or cared that it's over two hours long, and I'm keenly interested in the subject besides

He was a bad dude but it was a good movie. However, it probably made him more sympathetic than he deserved by the suggested laugh track to a smattering of his more obvious bad choices. It’s not incendiary, it’s not challenging. It’s just a comedy about America’s first clown president, so an easy target, and cheap laughs, a little real drama, never mind all the silent brown casualties. As a movie, it’s entertaining.

Now this was a good movie. Pretty much all of the actors did a great job, especially Richard Dreyfus as Cheney. I think it's possible for Josh Brolin to get a Best Actor nom, he really disappeared into the role in this one. It's also not entirely Republican or Democrat, they poke fun of Bush a lot in the scenes before he is 'born-again' but they also portray a serious and meaningful side after. The only negative parts I can say is that the movie is 100% talking, and it gets boring in some scenes

This was a movie that caught me off guard as I thought that this was going to be one of those movies that had a spin to it and it really didn't feel like it. This movie makes W more of a tragic character. Well done job by the cast as not only should Brolin get an Academy Award nomination, but also Dreyfuss should as well for his portrayal of Cheney. I really liked how this turned out and not just a skewer piece as this really kept my interest through out most of the movie.

The movie opens in the oval office where it feels like most the actors are there to do impressions. Quite a few of the characters feel that way the entire movie. There are quite a few moments that are probably dramatized as hell and completely overblown. It's not completely ineffective in making me feel something for W. (I give most of that credit to Brolin's portrayal though), but I can't say that I really cared about the majority of it. It was boring and obviously rushed.

Limited in scope in terms of which part of Bush's life/presidency it covers. Not really sure the purpose of the film (as it was finished and released before his presidency ended and it didn't really cover his second term). The performances are all pretty good, and it's a pretty good film.

W, the movie, is a bit of an odd duck. It's carried on the back of W, the performance, in which Brolin full-on embodies W, the President (although, sad to say, I think he shows more *presence* than I've ever seen from the genuine article). What's interesting about the movie is, it paints Bush as a man who is naive, and should have never been let into the Oval Office, but is mostly charming and likeable. Slow, but good at remembering names. By the way, the ending's perfect. Perfect.

Silly nonsense. Neither informative nor illuminating. The film goes out of its way to shoehorn in all Bush's verbal stumbles: "misunderestimated", "decider", "literacy test", and "is our children learning" all make an appearance. Everything is telegraphed, predictable, expected. A nice rendering of Cheney by Richard Dreyfuss though.

Stone's film has been lambasted from multiple quarters. It's too sympathetic to Bush or unfairly reduces him to an insipid caricature, depending on the predisposition of the pundit engaging in the evaluation. The problems with W. aren't political, they're dramaturgical. The entire film feels slapdash: Too familiar to be insightful journalistic interpretation and too superficial to explore the psychological underpinnings of those that have callously shaped the world in recent years.

The performances are impressions. The style is unclear--and not in a good way. It can't decide which way it wants to go. A flawed but enjoyable film. The direction is a little uneven; at times it seems Stone intends a pensive character study, and then it will dip into satirical territory. There are moments of editorializing, and the inevitable scenes where it attempts to summarize 8 years in as many lines. Even so, it is well-filmed and well-acted. Josh Brolin is especially excellent as the title character, and it boasts excellent supporting roles (exception is the caricaturization of Condoleezza Rice).

For a public figure as maligned as George W. Bush it would be easy and perhaps almost expected to portray him with either great disdain or with hamfisted parody. Fortunately, Stone does neither and for this he has succeeded. It's daring how close this film moves to absurdity when it depicts world leaders and critical historical events as arguments in back rooms and conversations at the dinner table, but that comes with the biopic territory. A dry but often revealing look at "the Decider."
