When the Day Breaks

Gorgeous art and a terrific sense of style, too bad the whole thing is rather blah. One of those works that's impressive while at the same time not at all captivating.

Great animation !!!

I'm a sucker for rotoscope animation, and the songs perfectly complement the film's curiously melancholic tone, but the story doesn't exactly pack a considerable punch.

It's well made but it feels rather dull and empty.

Not the best short I have seen, but loved the style.

Rotoscoping done well for sure, except I think that the movie is too zoomed in to be completely effective. It just left me a little more confused, which kind of comes across as a way to camouflage how unexciting this is. I'm giving it a minor pass because I appreciate it.

NFB SHORT A DAY #23: The potentially disastrous choice to have the animation approximate heavily textured and impossibly wild handheld camerawork comes through beautifully, due in large part I think to the animal characters, unconventionally anthropomorphic for mainstream 'toons. The contrasts are interesting and effective, and the film as a whole succeeds where few shorts do in conveying the feeling of a journey taken.
