The story is the simple, streamlined stuff of legend, the effects are revolutionary, the action is thrilling, the robots are awesome, John Williams' score is bombastic brilliance, Darth Vader is amazing, Harrison Ford is the most charming of all charming rogues, and for all its flaws it's the perfect movie for me. It's my childhood in movie form, and if I ever have a son, I'll never love him as much as I love this movie.

This is the film responsible for causing Hollywood thinking, production, and marketing to all converge around one thing: special effects. It is also responsible for the integration of merchandising, from the conceptual stage, into film production. It is in this that the historical significance of this film and this cinematic "franchise" consist. Other than that, it's an uninteresting and cartoon-like children's space opera with a poor script that at best delivers some slightly amusing moments.

This is more than a movie, it's a state of mind - that intoxicating feeling of infinite possibilities and waiting-to-be-discovered adventures out beyond the stars. It's packed with iconic imagery, archetypal yet relatable characters, and the best film score ever written. Despite the unfortunate directions the franchise went in later years, this movie remains a perfect example of its type. If I were on a desert island with only one movie to watch for the rest of my life, this would be it.

Ironically launching an empire of its own, STAR WARS is one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, a fact some people are all too happy to forget. This is the story of the little b-picture that could, a triumph of visual and audible breakthroughs in movie-making, and a film to remind an entire generation, that going to the cinema was originally meant to be fun. Whilst Jean Luc-Picard wows to bodly go where no man has gone before, this was the movie that actually did it.

That moment when the music starts and you see those scrolling words; it's iconic. There's no other word for it. It was a labor of love, something even George Lucas himself seems to have forgot. Small budget, painstaking model work and pioneering special effects that could have broke Lucas forever, but instead turned him into a billionaire. The story is formulaic, but the strength lies in memorable character actors like Harrison Ford and Alec Guinness who turn corny dialogue into classic quotes.

Obviously Lucas's deep understanding of storytelling got Gen X & Xennial kids immersed in this film. Yet one thing is often overlooked: how deeply the picture empathizes with young people. The choices that Luke and Leia confront (fighting power, staying at home despite a dream, being properly mentored) ring true to anyone born after 1970. Especially those who were working class, religious, of color, or immigrants. It may be a silly story about spaceships, but the themes are profound.

I don't get why people keep saying this is entertaining when the action scenes are unexciting, the characters are dry, the dialogue is atrocious, and the general story is highly archetypal. But I'll refrain from being a total and utter boob about this and I will admit that the cinematography is highly impressive, the score is a classic, the sets and creatures are fully realised and, best of all, the sound design is wonderfully goofy. Less credit to Lucas, more for Burtt, Dilley and Reynolds.

What else can be said that hasn't already? The film score is the greatest in movie history, the special effects represented a quantum leap forward, it made mainstream stars of Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and James Earl Jones, it introduced the singular villain in screen history...it's the single biggest film of all-time.

It's the ultimate beginning to the ultimate sci-fi film series. It's one of the greatest good vs. evil movies ever, and it's commonly believed to not even be the best in the series. Even so, the characters are incredible, the story is classic, and Star Wars is practically a film archetype. Not much can hold a candle to it. Awesome!

Star Wars is the most important film to ever come out. It's extraordinary on every technical and artistic level while still remaining completely entertaining and engaging. It caters to every audience available and ushered in the idea of blockbusters being not just fun, but good movies as well. I work with young men, and from time to time they ask about a film as such. Sometimes they've seen the new ones, not the old, sometimes they haven't seen any. And they ask, "Will it hold up?" It's not like sword fights haven't obliterated what we see here. It's not as if the imaginative creatures and universe aren't duplicated a thousand times over. So why do I answer yes? Binary Sunset. That scene, that music. It hasn't been duplicated since. J. Williams > Hans Zimmer's Baaaaaaaah

I think it's overrated and 90% of its praise comes from pure nostalgia. I'm also bitter because it basically ended the "film generation" of the seventies. Space opera by definition is fluffy and dumb. This is the best of a subgenre lacking substance, and that's nothing to be proud of.

Great start to a classic series. Though I find Hamill to be the weakest link, everyone else does a great job, especially Ford who is charming as hell. George Lucas wears his influences on the film's proverbial sleeve, reinvigorating classic tropes with exciting visual design. A fairly crude production, its creator's aspirations tempered by a budget more modest than his imagination. The text isn't great, and the acting swerves from respectable to downright awful. But it is a cinematic spectacle, a fun adventure set in a wild universe, and filled with memorable characters.

Described by Kael as an 'epic without a dream', but that applies more to the prequels and Disney films. Regardless of motives, or its detrimental effect on Hollywood, Lucas and his team created an original world populated by characters based on archtypes that are nonetheless distinctive. The practical effects are still impressive, the sets have a wonderful retro-futuristic design, and the final shootout on the Death Star arguably remains the most thrilling of its kind.

After watching the prequels the 'realness' of this movie is overwhelming. The 4K77 restoration i watched is beautiful. The little details, the 'used' look, all those models; Star Wars often holds up better than the prequels. The actual movie starts out a bit too slow with 10 minutes of robots and jawas talking early on, but once it gets going it's unstoppable. Even with the sometimes weak dialogue the people still feel real and you want them to win. Fischer's snarkiness is especially wonderful.

My favorite of the Star Wars movies. Purists will say their favorite is the Empire Strikes Back. Many of my generation love The Return of the Jedi. The brain damaged feel that the prequels are the best, but none struck me as hard as the first. Dated special effects, occasional over-acting (see Hamill and Fisher), and a cheesy ending are overcome by a classically engaging good vs. evil story set in an imaginative universe that smartly starts in media res and is filled with a colourful and complimentary cast of characters: The angsty young Luke and wise old Obi-Wan; the cocky Han Solo and equally headstrong Leia; the uptight C3PO and brave R2D2 (who, along with the charming Chewbacca are remarkably relatable for being unintelligible).

I thought it was amusing, it's backed up by a strong mythology and it has certainly been influential. That said, let's face it: Lucas is neither a very good director nor a very good writer. The look and feel of this is tacky and dated and some of the things uttered are pure camp hilarity. Luke has the Force but no personality, Vader's respiratory problems are not scary and Kenobi is a gentle grandpa (although Solo and the droids were fun). The story arc is also predictable.
