Starsky & Hutch

Comedy, Crime
1h 41m
Set in the 1970s in a metropolis called "Bay City," this is the tale of two police detective partners, Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson (Wilson), and Dave Starsky (Stiller), who always seem to get the toughest cases from their boss, Captain Dobey, rely on omniscient street informer Huggy Bear (Dogg) and race to the scene of the crimes in their souped-up 1974 Ford Torino hot rod, telling the story of their first big case (as a prequel to the TV show), which involved a former college campus drug dealer (Vaughn) who went on to become a white collar criminal (Electra plays Hutch's girlfriend). I laughed twice. Once at the terrible ups and downs of Ben Stiller's career, and once at the terrible ups and downs of Owen Wilson's.

What a terrible movie. Not funny at all. 19 seems like a high ranking, what am I doing?? Ricky Gervais making fun of this on Extras was brilliant though.

Not even Har Mar Superstar can breathe life into this liquified turd of a movie. They remade a TV show no one wanted to see as a movie into a movie and totally killed whatever credibility the show had just so actors doing ten movies a year like Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Vince Vaughn could get another paycheck. Yay.

A middling comedy with very few funny moments, it's saved by Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller's chemistry - and a great Will Ferrell cameo.

Some amusing scenes, but overall disappointing, especially after Zoolander showed that Stiller and Wilson can be a fine comic duo. The film feels like a hodge podge of things that may have been funny in isolation, but don't really gel together to make an entertaining film. Also, Stiller's "Do it" character, one of the funnier bits, is just lifted from his old sketch comedy show and so, to me, felt a bit stale.

Fairly trashy 70s pastiche from some of the most overworked comic actors in Hollywood. I'd rather have one truly worthwhile film from Stiller, Wilson, Vaughn and so on than 3 disposable mediocrities a year.

The nice chemistry and mildly amusing concept take it to a certain point - the point of passive watchability. Judging from all the yellow scores I see on the right, I'm far from alone on this lukewarm opinion.

I originally heard that this movie happened because Stiller is a huge fan of the original series. Maybe not that much, though, because their characters aren't even anything like the original ones. This has a couple of laughs, but it lacks the warmth and charm of the original series.

Look if you have high hopes for this film, then blame yourself. Vaughn is funny in his heavy-sarcasm billian role, and Wilson and Stiller have their moments too. Overall though there was a lot of this film that was plain garbage. The mistake cocaine scene with Stiller can't even sniff Chris Katan's Corky Romano performance (yes I went there). I did enjoy Stiller's continued attempts to be respected, pulling his gun prematurely and paying for hit more than once. Don't expect a real story.

I really tried to like Starsky & Hutch but I just couldn't get into it. It was grating and inconsequential, with a large portion of its running time just not mattering. If it was mostly funny, I wouldn't have cared, but since it failed to make me laugh more than twice over 101 minutes, I can't say it succeeded in being a good comedy. Even the "buddy" part of this buddy comedy -- the most routine, formulaic part of the genre -- fails at working properly, or even at all.

Who knew that a campy 70's action/comedy television show could end up so hilarious? Todd Phillips, apparently, because he uses comedians Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson to his advantage to create a funny movie that pokes fun at its own subject matter, the show it is emulating, while at the same time creating a formidable action picture with some impressive stunts. Vince Vaughn tags along as the lovably insideous villain amongst a sea of other cameos. Worth checking out if you ever watched the sh
