Superb surreal film. I can't say I've seen anything like it. Oddly enough, as absolutely brutal as the film is, I find it absolutely hilarious in parts due to how absurd it is. Undoubtedly it's comedy of the blackest possible kind but if you get it, it's fantastic. Tom Hardy is absolutely brilliant and manages to not only display who Bronson is but what happens in his mind as everything unfolds from his mind, no doubt as he has spent the majority of his life in solitary.

As iconoclastic as its subject. The film is also as nihilistic, while realizing nihilism is still an ideal of a backwards kind. The acting, mustache, and soundtrack were glorious, but its greatest moments are in Bronson's insanity-laden 69-day freedom romp.

This wisely eschews a deeper exploration of the causes of his behaviour, instead it repeatedly reinforces how impossible it is to deal with him. As a result, it perhaps isn't very deep. However, Hardy throws everything into the role; it could be entirely bleak, but is really a brutal, surreal, jet black comedy, and is rather entertaining. There is a slight sense of A Clockwork Orange coming from this, perhaps in part due to its style and its music. A wild film. Refn is an interesting filmmaker.

What a vehicle for Tom Hardy to demonstrate considerable acting chops. He's magnetic. This is a strange and eccentric and stylish film, if not quite the avant-garde formalism Refn has made his hallmark. It revels in utter nihilism and depravity, perhaps a bit one-note but completely captivating, and not without a dark sense of humor.

"Bronson" is built upon Hardy's stunning performance. He really is brilliant. Layer on top of that some surrealism, style, black humour & a lucid mix of electronica & classical for a soundtrack & this is pretty special. There are things that bugged me; like the strange reliance on 'camp' characters to offset & exaggerate Bronson's own eccentricity & Refn focuses on style enough to occasionally seem self indulgent. But this film has one aim: To show the madness of Bronson, & it does just that!

If somebody grew up idolizing Alex DeLarge, he'd probably turn out something like Bronson. Hardy is magnetic in the title role, and of course Refn gives the film an ultrastylized sheen with colorful cinematography and slick electro music. Think of the film as a treatise on masculinity as defined by aggression, violence, and independence for its own sake - and at any cost. "For everything I long to do/No matter when or where or who/Has one thing in common too/It's a, it's a, it's a, it's a sin."

While there are echoes of other films' styles here (I got a Clockwork Orange vibe a few times), this is a largely unique work. Refn seems more concerned with surprising us on a scene-to-scene basis than on creating a movie that's tonally consistent. But this discordance serves things well, as Bronson himself is a confusing mess of a human being. Thankfully, Refn doesn't attempt to make us understand him. As Roger Ebert put it, there is some human behavior beyond our ability to comprehend.

The life story of Michael Peterson (aka Charlie Bronson), a notoriously violent UK prisoner who has spent most of his life in solitary. It's 90 minutes of Nicholas Winding Refn's usual stylistic flourishes (extended takes, jarring use of color, excellent musical choices) and Tom Hardy grinning like a maniac or fighting prison guards with his cock out. The framing narration being Bronson giving a weird spoken word performance is an artsy but intriguing choice.

Bronson lives and dies by the strength of its lead performance. Thankfully, Hardy's shoulders are more than broad enough to carry the load. The film feels a bit more like a talent showcase than a narrative, but Hardy and Refn both acquit themselves spectacularly. The editing, soundtrack and style keep a story of solitude from stagnating, and I can't hurl enough superlatives at Hardy's performance. He's mesmerizing and likeable no matter how depraved his actions become. A fine film, this one.

There was a whiff of A Clockwork Orange present, and Tom Hardy as well as Michael Gordon Peterson have been added to my 'Do not fuck with' list. Extra long scenes did sap away the raw energy this film gave off, which is a shame. A wonderful method of exploring such a fascinating persona: give him the receptive, empathetic audience he's always wanted. Terrific, nuanced acting, and I loved everything about the character. The score also ensures that you feel what Bronson wants you to feel as you watch his tale unfold. I want to use the term "nihilistic revelry," but that lacks the seemingly "good-natured fun" aspect Bronson finds in his violent antics.

Bronson has to be one of my favourite films of the last decade. I'll never forget the first time I saw this film and I couldn't wait to see what both star & filmmaker, Tom Hardy & Nicolas Winding Refn respectively would go on to do next with their careers. Whether it be Hardy's unforgettably mesmerizing & intense performance or Refn's simply stunning & masterfull direction, this film is a piece of art. The soundtrack, cinematography, screenplay... Bronson is just so satisfyingly re-watch-able.

Blew me away. Incredibly stylistic portrait of a real-life psychopath. It's not really a crime film in the traditional sense - it's much more about a person's self-projection and psychology. It's very meticulous - it takes influence from Kubrick but with an incredibly vibrant use of colour, a lot of humour, and a powerhouse effort from Tom Hardy who is genuinely terrifying at many points during the film. Violent but never glorifying violence, funny but never making light of awful acts. Brilliant

While the film never really makes a full connection between the subject and viewer, it's still an achievement. A brilliant exploration into the savage and even cerebral side of human violence. And as assaultive and stylistic as it is, the film is surprisingly patient. Refn keeps a very steady hand at the helm and never lets the film spiral out of control. Finally, Tom Hardy presents himself as a more than formidable performer. He chomps down on every moment of screentime and never lets go.

Gripping, powerful crime drama (owing more than a little to CHOPPER), fired by an astonishing portrait of ferocity by Hardy, who appears to be actively participating in many of the brutal fighting scenes without the aid of camera or effects trickery. Writer-director Refn wisely provides no context for this damaged, sick man's peverse mind-set, but instead goes a long way to conveying his thought processes and methods of viewing and digesting the world. And *I* care about Charlton Heston!

Hilarious. There's a lot of guilty pleasures in this film, showing just how fun prison can be for some people, and Refn frames and films Hardy in the most appropriately animalistic manner. This is also likely Hardy's best role, even if it is also his most show-offey, but he gets into the role 100% and dictates most of the fun that's to be had.

The film is all Hardy and he gives an unforgettable performance. From the look to the action to the delivery of the lines, a mix of toughness, thoughtfulness and insanity, he immerses himself completely in the role to give us a complex portrait of a strange man. I found it captivating and entertaining even if at times it gives less insight than it might appear. The film is more preoccupied with giving a show than revealing the depths of the character, but perhaps that's appropriate for Bronson.

In some respects this highly watchable film is a little gem. Hardy's performance is excellent, and captures the mannerisms of British working-class men. Pretty bombastic and singular film with a magnetic performance from Tom Hardy. Whatever story there is actually mostly concerns itself with the idea of a performance as a breakdown of a specific habitus. Not at all interested in commenting on the morality of the events which is both its strongest quality and its biggest shortcoming. Best understood as a crossbreed of playful exploitation and lightweight arthouse. Not to be taken completely seriously.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this film; perhaps that's why I enjoyed it so much. Tom Hardy does a simply spectacular job as the completely insane Michael Peterson, a.k.a. the titular Charles Bronson - "The most violent criminal in England". The film is darkly comedic, as Hardy relays Peterson's apparent detachment from the consequences of his violent and, most of the time, completely pointless actions. Personal favorite bit: "PUT ON MY BODY ARMOR."

Comparisons to Chopper are inevitable. They are both films about aggressive career criminals whose extended jail visits and general sociopathy have rendered them socially dysfunctional. Refn's style is flashier, but his narrative is similarly episodic (and impressionist). Unfortunately, he presents us with a one dimensional 'subjective' portrait of Bronson that aligns itself with the reprobate's own mythos. Hardy's excellent, near pantomine, performance anchors the film when Refn loses focus.

Its astonishing that I had never heard of this extremely prolific person before viewing this movie. But I am glad that I have, the man simply can not stop himself. If this film accomplished anything at all, it revealed an emphatic display of Refn's ingratiating editing and stylistic abilities. It was also a homage to many of Refn's apparent influences: Andrew Dominck's "Chopper", general Gaspar Noe, Milo's Formans' "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", and most incisively Stanley Kubrick. There are signs of emerging genius, but it's up to Refn to take it to the next level of fertile artistic ferocity, "Drive" maybe?

The war paint scene(s) are top notch. Tom Hardy has some fun with it all & Super Hans plays a brilliantly camp fighter-pimp. Bronson's tone is close to surreal & the rational behind its main character's motivation is impossibly irrelevant, there is none. What a film, where others are obsessed with a characters motivation from scene to scene to carry the audience through a film-spanning arc. Bronson, covers itself in grease & shows us how to slip through well standardised storytelling laws.

Hardy is fantastic in Bronson, and it is hard to take your eyes away from his grunting, brooding menacing portrayal. The sound track is completely "out of time" with the 1980's, but works well. However, the film itself concentrates on a few (mainly) violent episodes in B's life, and the script does little to explain the "ridiculousness" of this character, preferring to glorify in his violence. That said, the ending is incredibly powerful. Its a shame that his real story is much more interesting!

It's sad how Refn brutalizes such a bizarre, wicked (and funny!) prison story with so much artsy flair -- concert music with synth-pop to remark Bronson's two-faced personality, as well as his expected "hideous-men-together-in-velvet-neon-places-to-please-themselves-with-violence" scenes. Too much grease, and not enough cinema -- but that sequence that Bronson demands that his prison hostage help him prepare to fight, naked, and pass lotion on his ass (not in a gay way) is brilliant.

Comparisons with A Clockwork Orange abound, but at least A Clockwork Orange was attempting to make a point. This is just utterly nihilistic. A character completely consumed by his own rage, Bronson is about nothing other than violence. No justification, no excuses, no empathy, nothing. A tastefully stylish, if a bit one-track character study of an infamous prison inmate. There's little attempt to tackle the high hurdle of conveying solitary confinement, the crux of the guy's life. The focus seems to be on him beating up prison guards and scaring people, and in that sense it doesn't get much deeper than the opening scene. His violence is shamelessly glorified, to channel his own mindset, but as one warden calls it, Bronson's "ridiculousness" and "pitifulness" remains apparent.
