This got universally panned; everybody thinks it's stupid (for good reason), so what is there to say that hasn't been said? Well, there's this: Kevin Costner is my real father. I was conceived on the set of this film when Costner bedded a dolphin. Right now I am clumsily pounding this keypad with my cumbersome fins. Of course, none of that is true, but nobody's ever said it.

Intended as a sort of sci-fi updating of _Shane_, this overpriced Costner vehicle emerges instead as a waterlogged _Mad Max_ clone. It's not good by any means but really isn't as awful as its detractors hoped either. Visually interesting but long and meandering; being a big fan of Kevin's squint or Dennis's ranting is definitely a plus in trying to navigate these waters.

Theatrical: Dull and lethargic vanity project for Costner (check the gratuitous 'ass-shot' over the titles) rightly marked the beginning of the end of his viability as leading man; derivative attempt at MAD MAX on the high seas has little to recommend it outside of some pretty water-side cinematography. Hopper should have been able to inject some life into this, but so little time is spent developing his character (or even establishing him as a major threat) that it's all for naught.

What do you do when the old west and all the baseball fields are flooded? You get yourself a superfast piece of shit boat, cruise a bit and pick up some bitches. Some are too young and weird, but others are totally doable. Watch out for retarded bad guys and find paradise through magic and shit. Rein in on Hopper's hookers and blow though or else you may have to skimp on the sets, writers and your credibility.

Having given this film a rewatch I can safely say it is, in fact, a bad movie. It moves at a snails pace, most of the action feels forced and terrible, and, perhaps worst of all, the plot unfolds in a tremendously unnatural way. Painful to sit through (and I like Kevin Costner).

Although this movie got hammered by the critics I always enjoyed watching it. I guess it was the lack of Sci-Fi flicks at the time or something, but this gave me just what I needed - a story set in an unconventional post apocalyptic world. I guess that it was Costner's ego that killed this with the viewers rather than the movie itself.

Ulysses cut. Great setting. I could nitpick on scientific accuracy but we don't do that for Marvel films so why do so here? I liked that it took a very long time for Kevin Costner to warm up to his guests. Not a fan of the mass murder ending. Fav scene: going underwater. It was Earth all along!

Waterworld was received far more critical acclaim in the EU than in the US. I wonder: is there some kind of cultural difference underlying this? I thought the film was pretty great (I live in the EU, by the way). It's one of those cult films in a unique setting, which leaves plenty of room for a interesting (yet dangerous) world. Genetic mutation, world-wide flooding, the promise of sand and oil-greased bandits: How can that be bad?

Why are people so intent upon bashing everything Kevin Costner is in? Especially this movie? Any sci-fi buff can see that it's a decent movie, and as for production values, there are only so many sci-fi movies of this quality, so we might as well relish the ones that arent pieces of b-movie crap.

Waterworld is regarded by many as one of the biggest flops of all time. Considering it had such a huge budget, it's hard to see where all the money went. There's no denying that the set designs are impressive and convincingly believable. But otherwise everything else is pretty pointless. Kevin Costner is a likeable but very overrated actor, and in this case his directing capabilities are much to be desired also. However despite Waterworld's ridiculousness, I do regard it a guilty pleasure.

Clearly a premise that led to budgetary problems and production difficulties, but Costner's real "crime" (and this applies generally to his career, I think) was to have believed in the possibility of a sincerely, almost quasi-religiously, heroic cinema, in an age not inclined to share that belief. The Odyssean elements of that heroism amount to an expression of the desire of fathers to somehow earn the right to leave their families (to go sailing or fishing, or some other free-seeming activity).

I have vivid memories of seeing this at the cinema when I was 10 with my Dad. The main thing I remember from that trip was some fine naked lady arse on the Costner's raft-type thing! I thought this was a cool film at the time, but since have discovered as an adult that its pretty poor. I like the fact that the oil tanker that sinks is the Exxon Valdez... because thats how sad I am.

The world design is pretty great. The reliance on practical sets and effects alone is such a breath of fresh air 25 years later. The main problem is Costner's awful performance as one of the least likeable protagonists I've ever seen. It's impressively ambitious, but getting invested in this plot is a real effort.

This movie is engaging throughout, but also has a lot of unnecessarily dark nonsense added that nearly ruins it. There are so many very exciting moments and indisputably clever elements, but for every great thing there is an equally idiotic bad thing. I would love to have seen a lot less of Hoppers stupid motley crew, and more creative man-versus-the-elements in this story. Kevin Costner was great, and Jeanne Tripplehorn was amazing. Many other good performances, but also really lame bad guys.

Probably the worst role of Dennis Hopper ever and Jeanne Tripplehorn tries to be the most annoying actor ever. There's some good action too but it doesn't make this a good movie.

Watched the Ulysses Cut. Absolutely fantastic and quite relevant story, with sort of a Mad Max factor that actually doesn't annoy (me). Unfortunately it has a comical and far too fairytale sweet finale that doesn't suit its overall grittyness. Without a doubt the only Costner film (so far) I really like.Think he pretty much was made for this role.Hopper could have done better in the first couple of scenes, but grows into his role later on.Apart from the air balloon it's visually stunning for '95

Waterworld isn't as terrible as everyone makes it out to be. The story is interesting. The script has some pretty terrible moments in it but what summer blockbuster movie doesn't. The casting of this movie is pretty good. Kevin Costner plays a character that is as close to Aquaman as anybody could have gotten pre-Spider-man. You can tell that they wanted him to be a super-hero of sorts. Dennis Hopper can play the hell out of a bad guy. I knew that I saw Jack Black in the background at one point.

It seems a lot of the film's terrible reputation derived from everyone subconsciously realizing that Dances with Wolves (and Costner in general) was kind of shit and didn't deserve an Oscar. Waterworld's not great, but it's not the worst thing ever because at least Dennis Hopper's enjoying himself doing the same character from Super Mario Bros. Just needed a reworked mud monologue with some of that sweet Exxon Valdez crude.

I actually kind of liked it. All of it. A film experience not unlike drinking your own pee. Just like Kevin Costner had to do that to survive, I had to watch this movie to make it through my 90's films. It was quite unpleasant and not very refreshing. Costner is an unlikable fish-person, jerk and is just a terrible movie hero. Dennis Hopper was a little funny, but this was also by far one of his worst roles. Jeanne Tripplehorn is about the only delightful creature in the film and got me through this lengthy behemoth of a film...

Promising idea that regrettably settles for stupidity, Waterworld is nowhere near as bad as its detractors claim, but considering the money and talent involved, it's still a letdown, even 24 years later. It's often referred to as Mad Max on water, but it feels more deliberately old fashioned in its sensibility. The end result is an odd mix of gritty yet glossy action and 80's style heroics, and while many of the action scenes are good, the script is poor and plays like a spec job.
