The condensed love story at the start is beautiful. Some music and short, delicate scenes convey a lifetime of joy and sorrow. Jettisoning that subtlety in favour of such broad, obvious comedy is infuriating. The idea seems to be: if a house can fly, then anything goes. Fuck those dogs and that bird! Some genuine Pixar moments slip through, but this continued disneyfication is a worrying trend.

I'm surprised Pixar even bothers to market thier films for children these days. I actually heard a child ask "why are you crying mommy" after the opening Carl and Ellie montage. Oh and by the way, this film is lovely.

Not only do Pixar keep effortlessly coming up with fresh ideas and characters that never hit a false note, their masterfully animated films are also superior to most regular movies in terms of technical aspects of filmmaking (framing, editing, scoring etc). The montage at the beginning is, simply, sublime. My only nitpick is that I found it relatively unfunny. Genuinely touching and invoking a childish sense of adventure will do, I suppose.

Another great Pixar film that would have been a masterpiece had it not been for some of Russell's annoying characteristics and the moment when the film turns dogs into airplane pilots. Generally, the villain and his army of trained pooches felt a little forced. Otherwise, the driving force of the plot (Carl's love for his late wife) is incredibly engaging emotionally and Carl Fredricksen becomes one of Pixar's most memorable creations on his own right. That montage will get you every time.

A little disappointment. Without completely unnecessary villain and his talking dogs that would be a masterpiece and probably my favorite animation ever, but now it's just a great, colorful movie with a couple of incredibly touching scenes. It's moving, it's funny and I really would like to love it, but I can't. / South America! It's like America, but south. :)

Very entertaining, and quite funny, too. It falls into too many cliches at the beginning of the third act, but then the action picks back up and is excellent to the end, and the montage early on is truly touching. Not Pixar's best, but certainly up there.

About fifteen minutes into the film there is the most beautiful montage which represents Carl (The old man who decides to go on a adventure using balloons to life his house in the air) and his wife's entire relationship. That was the first time that I cried. This movie is beautiful and touching. Though animated it touches on human emotions in the way that many non animated films cannot do. It shows that you can combine stunning animation with making someone want to cry.

Pixar hits another home-run with their new light-hearted, heartfelt comedy. A story about making your dreams come true, Up has plenty to offer to both adults and children alike. The script is one of Pixar's best and stuck somewhere between laughs are themes that stay with the audience long after leaving the theater.

Would have made for a perfect, tear-jerking 15 to 20 minute short, but where's the fun (and money) in that? The story slightly lost me at the introduction of the talking dogs, an anthropomorphic tendency I was hoping Pixar's creative minds could have avoided this time. They also shoehorn in their famous "something is lost and must be found" plot, as well as a maniacal villain whose turn to evil is abrupt and unconvincing. But hell, I was still manipulated by the cuteness of it all to enjoy it!

First off I'll say the animation is excellent and the soundtrack is wonderful. The general story is touching and heart-warming. However the movie has two glaring flaws: first the protagonist has a side-kick that's basically a fat Short Round, except even more frustratingly useless, and packs a few really contrived moments. It's still worth seeing but if you get a nagging feeling that Pixar has done much better, don't worry, you're not the only one.

In my opinion this is the best movie that Pixar has yet to put out. The animation is awesome, but the storyline is even better. The interaction between the Carl and Russell provides lots of laughs (especially when you then throw in a dog and some sort of crazy bird). My date went through an entire box of tissues, so if you cry come prepared. But besides all the laughs and tears (that Pixar films usually have) this really had a deep story to it. That's what I liked best about it. Love Dog!

Although an abundance of clunky "jokes" and abrupt thematic shifts keep it from being an animation classic, Up nevertheless succeeds as a moving story of an old widower's determination to shed his life of one particular regret. A bit more somber and adult in places than any Pixar film to date.

Finally a 3D film that doesn't use it for tacky sight-gags, but instead creates incredible depth of field. The movie is absolutely beautiful, full of vibrant colours and gorgeous animated vistas. The opening Ellie montage is incredibly moving, creating Carl as a tragic, quietly desperate protagonist before setting him off on an Indiana Jones adventure in the second half. This film knows the spirit of adventure well, instantly becoming one of the greats of the genre. Very funny too. Pixar > all.

"Up" is a pure roller coaster ride: slow (and in this case beautiful) opening followed by exhilarating thrills. Although not their best film (it hits a small bump around 30 minutes in), Pixar's latest effort is without a doubt their funniest film to date. The end result is nothing short of stunning and I hope to see it again soon. Michael Giacchino deserves lots of credit for his music.

After finding "Wall-E" (my first exposure to Pixar since the original "Toy Story") to be a little overrated, I wasn't sure how I would respond to "Up", but after the gorgeous montage of the old man's life with his wife, Ellie, I was hooked, and impressed that a "kids" movie was not afraid to tackle such dark subject matter. While I found that the small mailman was far more annoying then he had to be and the overly slapsticky stuff did nothing for me, its overall sweetness ultimately won me over.

Yawn. Another year, another Pixar masterpiece. It's the same old thing: these show-offs spend their time refining a story to cinematic perfection, with peerless animation skills and unwavering storytelling instincts. Then the finished product's met with universal acclaim, record-breaking box office tallies, an Oscar or two, and a fanbase that endures for years to come. Rinse and repeat. After just about fifteen years of this shit, it's getting to be a bit of a bore. Why can't they suck for once?

After the brilliance of Wall-E and Ratatouille, I can't help but be disappointed by Up. The animation is spectacular and probably worth the price of admission alone, but the film's structure is so odd and abrupt. It jumps from plot point to plot point with little setup or explanation. The action is less exciting than Wall-E's (or even Bolt's) and so many of the jokes here just aren't funny. The Carl/Ellie stuff is really great, though. It's above average, but not by much.

Better than Wall-E, and Pixar's best film to date. The silliness of it all ties in perfectly with the theme of childhood imagination and adventure, and the humor is spot on in a way that surpasses even that of Wall-E. My only problem is the antagonist, whom I found unbelievable, coincicental, constructed, and generally out of place. It annoyed me for a certain part of the middle of it. When differences are based entirely on misunderstanding, why not just clear it up? Still, fantastic.

The first half of Up is everything a great animation should be: gorgeous CGI, excellent soundtrack; the plot eased along by the visuals, not dialogue. There is also a poignant story here, with an elderly protagonist to boot. Unfortunately Pixar again get afraid of alienating the younger viewers so quickly turn it into a generic family flick complete with annoying kid, talking animals, all-action finale, etc. Maybe next time they'll have the balls to go all the way, but I doubt it.

ust another emotionally-fueled yet hilarious, character driven yet action-packed, beautifully rendered and detail-perfected Pixar adventure. Pixar, how do you do it? I find myself asking this question after viewing every new film of theirs. In the case of Up, they do it brilliantly. It's a crazy, imaginative, hilarious adventure unlike anything I've seen before. Once again, the company's given us an endlessly rewatchable gem that's pure joy for any age. Aw, I loved this. Definitely one for repeat viewings. It was a great story with great animation, nothing short of what we've come to expect from Pixar. There were a few moments when I was reminded that I was watching a kids' movie (like the doberman's loose wire voice), which was a little jarring and took me out of the moment for a second, but overall, they tackle making an animated film suitable for people of all ages extremely well.

Pixar's "Up" is truly delightful, a gorgeous-looking film with a lot of heart and tenderness. I didn't find it to be as amiable, sharp or quietly intelligent as last year's "Wall-E", but I did enjoy its gargantuan scale of adventure, and its lead character Carl. Surely the creative folks behind each respective Pixar film must approach the task w/ some degree of complete terror by this point - after all, who wants 2 break one of the most highly publicized winning streaks ever? The makers of Up can leave the worrying 2 the next group as this is yet another home run. Pixar delivers again. The underlying story is a touching bit of whimsy that deals with some serious subjects (dealing with loss, reconciling oneself to broken dreams and promises, etc) as well as with delightful escapades (old timey explorers, the exaggerated zoological information found in old accounts of foreign lands). It is a "kids' film" so there are a few more wacky aspects than I would have liked, but unlike many in the genre it has heart enough to appeal to all ages.

Though I couldn't help myself to taste some Dreamworks job at some parts, like speaking animals and characters having adventure which I believe was intentional. Only thing Dw can do is to create speaking animals, so I suppose they made a reference to this with dog-talking thing. At the end, i found this movie funny, hilarious, amusing and very emotional. It's a fun movie, but falls short of WALL-E in almost every department. The Carl & Ellie montage is a textbook lesson in marvelous dialogue-free storytelling, and is absolutely heartbreaking. There are a few other touching scenes, but overall the film is going more for adventure than pathos. I would have enjoyed it more if the Carl/Russell dynamic was more engaging. It perfectly blends the potent and treasured memories of old age with a great sense of adventure, surreal comedy and some very memorable and excellently animated characters. It effortlessly glides between some very real and down-to-earth emotions and a physical comedy adventure without ever feeling disjointed or out of place. Pixar proves it's probably the most proficient studio working in Hollywood now. The narrative is superbly crafted, incorporating moments of remarkable and palpable adventure, comedy and pathos. The voice acting is surprisingly earnest: kudos, Asner. The only element that felt derivative was the 'New Groove' voice for the Evil Dog. Carl's house as his Albatross near the end is inspired. Fantastic beginning. Unfortunately very weak in the middle with the dogs/birds/violence bits which really drag. Nice finish and photo-epilogue. Extra points for originality, but also removed some points for the middle section of the film which was really quite crappy. As with Wall-E, this movie would have been much better if it had kept dialog to an absolute minimum from start to finish. The images tell a far more compelling story than the script. Great sound throughout.

Pixars Up truly moves, inspires and entertains as no other! What a wonderful 'little' film, about many importants aspects of life. On par with Wall-E but slightly underdeveloped in comparison with Ratatouille, in my opinion.

Both realistic and fictional, sad and funny. The first half hour is really sorrowful, tells of a great human drama - not something common in animated films. Quite touching.

Carl Fredericksen has become one of my favorite characters in the Pixar universe. He was so well written and developed. Ed Asner does a great job voicing Carl. There was a lot of emotion involved in this movie especially in the beginning involving Carl and his wife. That was beautiful. The story with the rest of the cast was well done too. Such as Russell with his dad, Kevin and her babies and at times I thought Dug was a little annoying, I liked him as well. Awesome animation, great film

Genuinely moving scenes, entertaining short scenes and likable characters. Another strong Pixar effort.

Delightful in so many ways. The characters are unique and heartbreakingly cute, and it's a refreshing film in that it really delivers everything one would expect from an adventure film--including the darkness.

The montage at the beginning was great, the rest not so much: stupid kid, talking dogs, improbable twist and slapstick comedy. It's like Wall-E: good premise, bad execution. I think Pixar is cashing in on its fame but sooner or later this "oh-my-god-best-animation-studio-ever" fuss will go away (although they earned it).

Powefully Emotional opening, proceeds to be a typical but lovely pixar thing. The hype this thing got shouldn't set it apart from other pixar titles as much as it did to me though.

Beautiful animation! Specially the first 30 minutes - I instantly fell in love with it. Reminded me of how important dreams are, even if following them doesn't always take where you expect.
