Exactly the kind of "respectable", conservative, utterly timid "prestige movie" directors do when they get old and want an easy paycheck to finance their retirement. Love Polanski but this is not one of his better ones

Ben Kingsley and Mark Strong are wonderful as usual. Good adaptation.

Surprisingly conservative, meat and potatoes adaptation mixes the best of both worlds of Lean's adaptation with the musical, but largely comes off as a cheap facsimile until the second half, picking up with the arrival of Foreman's sinister Sykes. Individual moments work well (Nancy's final scene, as well as the grim and shadowy denouement) - oddly Kingsley makes little impression as a Fagin largely made up of behavioural tics. Eminently watchable, but seriously below par for Polanski.

Polanski captures the novel's occasionally grotesque atmosphere wonderfully.

Sorry, can't do better than the version with Mark Lester and Oliver Reed.

Vivid adaptation. You can just feel the poverty here.

Horrible. The only reason it gets a 20 is for well done costumes, sets, and score.

Polanski offers a sobering portrait of the muck and grime that engulfs the poor in any era. Well done, but still no match for David Lean's 1948 masterpiece.

Why wasn't this a monster hit? Best Dickens adaptation ever, best Ben Kingsley role ever.

I've always liked Oliver Twist. The original was better, but this is still enjoyable to view.

Good film.

A safe, straightforward retelling that stays within the lines and doesn't take risks. Which makes for a serviceable film, but from Polanski you'd expect more.

A well-told and unashamedly gritty/grimy telling of Dicken's classic.

The characterization and the sceneries are great, but the movie is dragged.
