Drew Barrymore's directorial debut is a cute and flashily-packaged foray into the teenage female pysche. Although seemingly targeted at a much younger audience, the camerawork, use of music, and performances are excellent across the board, including stand-out jobs by Page and Wiig. If this is indicative of the kind of aesthetic that Barrymore can bring to her future films, then it stands as an excellent first effort.

The movie about roller derby that you never knew you wanted until you knew you wanted it, at which point you watched it. Was entertained until the end of the movie where I realized that they weren't going to use Devo's seminal masterpiece even once. -1,000,000 points.

Considering it is Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, it's actually surprisingly watchable and kinda fun to be honest. It definitely exceeded my expectations. Still, the film suffers from poor character development and a not so engaging storyline that veers too much towards predictable territories. Well, Page's and Harden's acting skills can only do so much.

For a film that relies so heavily on common storytelling tropes it manages to make them reasonably fresh and fun. The mother daughter conflict can be seen a mile away but, to the film's credit, it's not overplayed and the roller derby action is fun.

Bit of a nothing movie. Actually thought it would have its moments but slowly my attention started to drift off. Ellen Page's story arc with her parents is painfully predictable and I just wished the time was better used on something else. A few interesting characters is all "Whip It" had going for it in the end.

The script is thin and straight-forward, but Barrymore manages to make this a far more endearing and entertaining film than it should be. The cast is uniformly strong, with a number of great performances coming from surprising places -- most notably Daniel Stern who plays the best Movie Dad I've seen in quite some time. Page is 100% believable, and Wiig and Bell deserve mention as well. Entirely predictable, but it's a raucous and fun film that feels authentic. "We deserve better villains."

Girl power movie for the hipster teen girls. Although I don't fall into demographics, I found the movie very enjoyable. Ellen Page as always is pleasant to look at, soundtrack is cute and well picked. It must be noted, that this film proves that it's possible to remove pantyhose while swimming underwater. Entertaining, fun, but forgettable flick.

This being her directorial debut being used as a selling point, it's worth noting that Barrymore's skills as such never rises even slightly above competent. Steeped in the overly sweet form of girl power she seems 2 embody, u never once worry 4 the female lead -even angry brawls happen in a food-fight atmosphere. And "Female Lead" should b her name since Page plays one of the most cliched heroines ever put on screen. Any1 over 12 or w/ a Y chromosome best steer clear of this snooze fest.

A pretty enjoyable directorial debut for Drew Barrymore. The characters are interesting, the drama between mother and daughter compelling and well executed, and the sport is an unconventional one. On a side note, I approve of the use of The Breeders on the soundtrack.

You can tell Barrymore is enjoying her directorial debut; overall, it's a very fun watch even if it isn't going to go down in history.

A supercharged girl-power/coming of age film that strays from the usual marks. Barrymore does a superb job empowering the women in her film without emasculating men or portraying the Y chromosome as barbaric. I had a good time with this flick. It was easy entertainment and its messages weren't crammed into our faces. It did go a little Hollywood towards the end with the inevitable "everything's going wrong all at once" shtick, but I had so much fun I mostly ignored it.

It doesn't escape a lot of trappings of the sports movie genre and the rebellious teenager/coming-of-age prototypes but it's such a fun film, with a damn fine lead performance and very memorable characters (it was great seeing Stern again), that it's ultimately not a big deal. Some of the hipsterish elements can grate but overall they're not a big detraction from the film's quality. Ultimately, it was just a really enjoyable ride. Ellen Page is as likable as any actress working today.

Page's performance is solid, but I can't say the same of the most of the rest of the roller derby crew. The sountrack, while enjoyable, is a crutch that's overused. The story is completely derivative and predictable and the derby scenes are boring. Most of the small amount of humor in this should be excised as it's silly and out of place. Too much is stuffed into this (including an useless romance) so the pacing is really atrocious, with conflicts spontaneously arising and magically resolving.

There is perhaps nothing more endearing about Barrymore's directorial debut than its delighted conviction in the value of sisterhood. It's immersed in the concept without any hint whatsoever that it might be something that needs to be at all justified. The inherent reward of such bonding is self-evident. It's the film's greatest strength, but it also holds it back. Nice as it may be as a philosophy, it drains away some of the drama. Page is terrific, giving her role a deeply felt authenticity.

Whip It was Drew Barrymore's first movie that she produced and directed and in my eyes was her first failure. She attempted to make a movie that portrayed early womanhood and the struggles that are associated. Instead she showed a sport that doesn't even exist and that isn't the least bit interesting. It was something that no one could relate which overshadowed her attempted message of the movie.

A somewhat feminist account of the melodramatic sports comedy. Barrymore makes roller derby seem intriguing with an underground grittiness and charm, perhaps even more exciting than it really is with its indie chic aesthetic. Page plays a refreshing reversal of her usual roles with Bliss Cavendar, an innocent teenage girl that yearns for some excitement in the form of a marginally cool sport that she excels at. I don't particularly care for the genre but I'll watch anything with Page in it.

Plenty of laughs, babes bashing each others brains in and sassy verbal sparring sessions, there's also a whole lot of family melodrama added in. It's all well acted but I could've used less of it in favor of more roller chick action...as it is, it feels like a whole lot of pertinent derby stuff was edited for time.

As others have stated the romantic subplot was completely unneeded and I felt at least took away from the roller derby scenes. More roller derby less bullshit doomed romance. Ellen Page is decent in her role but the film works mainly due to all the great side characters.

Very likeable, fun, entertaining movie that spends way too much time on an insipid, painfully lame romance subplot that almost brings the whole thing to a screeching halt. I tried to pretend it was a slow build to Page realising she's gay, but that gross, creepy musician made it very difficult. Barrymore does surprisingly well otherwise (in that it doesn't feel like a movie made by an actor), although she needs to learn that there's more to soundtracking than just putting your iPod on shuffle.

Enjoyable fun... doesn't deviate too much from the usual sports movie and teen coming-of-age generica, but roller derby makes a refreshing change from football movies, and most importantly, the characters are there too. Ellen Page did great and all the supporting cast pulled their weight too. Wiig, Wilson, Shawkat, Stern all gain some more screen cred. And Austin was nicely represented by a Juno-esque alternative vibe in the story which kept it away from bubblegum mainstream territory. Good mix.

It's got a very good cast, and I wish the film was a lot longer - every character has a few good lines and very quickly sets up their position in the narrative but I wish we had more time to spend with them. It would've been nice to have more development of the other Hurl Scouts, the love story felt weak and shoehorned in, and it lacked a really killer montage (absolutely necessary to be a great sports movie) but I enjoyed it none-the-less.

If you cut out all of the clichés or time spent watching Bliss and Oliver frolic in the water/wheat/air, 'Whip It' would clock in around 20 minutes. It's a pretty harmless picture, but it has nothing to say that hasn't been said before. It makes no effort to throw you a curve ball. Not to mention, had Bliss just been forthright, the movie may have ended a little sooner. There wasn't even a really good motive to lie about how she spends her nights, until she's forced to back up that original lie.

One of those movies where the story arc is "girl becomes good at something, then everything goes tits up ( boyfriend, parents, best friend), but in the end everything is OK and everyone learns something". You have seen it a million times before, know exactly what is going to happen, but rarely will you have seen it with this much charm. Page is really endearing, and Barrymore's direction is competent. Don't bother hunting it down, but if you bump into it, just enjoy it for what it is .. Good fun

I watched this movie with prejudice thinking it was going to be a complete disaster but with Ellen and Zoe in it I had to watch it. I was gratefully surprised, it's not a 7th art masterpiece, but is an entertaining chick flix, with good performers (not their best performances) and a fun plot with Ellen and Zoe in it. I don't think that Drew was overambitious in her first movie and that really paid off, it feels like an honest movie.

The plot is pretty generic and you can see every main beat coming, but the characters are well written and played. While overall it's generic there are interesting twist beats, but lets face it that's pretty much all you can have with a sports movie at this point. The love story is what actually lets this down, it sucks life from the film and the guys band are ARSE. Fallon also fails quite badly. Good fun, well worth a watch, but not perfect.

Cute story about a young girl dragged around to beauty pageants and finding she prefers to participate in the roller derby. Ellen Page is very cute as the youngest member of the team, hiding from her parents and eventually having to come clean about it. Some cute moments with a dynamite cast of young ladies. The story is a bit shallow, but still fun to watch.

This coming-of-age story might not be unique but is dipped in the delicious roller derby culture where girls rule. And not only did Barrymore craft an engaging female-power action comedy for her directorial debut, but she also dons some skates as tough chick Smashley Simpson--a particular treat is seeing her and Page do much of their own skating.

I went in expecting a different kind of movie, but I still really liked it for the most part. The cast is excellent and hilarious. The book was mostly written for girls (I think) so I'm surprised and glad this turned out to be something that both guys and gals could laugh at and enjoy. It's not cliched or anything, it's just good.

Fun film that's been sitting on my to-watch list for almost a decade. It evokes a nostalgia for simpler movies made in simpler times. Entertaining with light emotional touches keep the stakes low.

Carried by the honesty of the relationships and the female chemistry it got seriously bogged down by the obligatory romance storyline (although I liked how it concluded.) A nice light/fun touch by miss Barrymore.

Somewhere in this conventional plot line was a message about finding ones true self and growing into the person you want to despite all the naysayers trying to hold you back. The comedy missed on almost every level and yet somehow the film was still entertaining enough to keep my interest. It just seemed to focused on rebellion and not enough about personal growth and growing up quickly. Ellen Page is always believable in a role like this which is probably the biggest reason this film was decent

Whip it, good? Had a convenient ending instead of a real life one, disappointed after that because up until then, it felt pretty realistic. Wouldn't consider Page's character a hero though. Just an impulsive teen who's bored with her suburban life and ignores all the mistakes her older teammates made. That part was believable. Everyone was great in this. Fun food fight.

It's a okay movie. Try to be a different sport movie, but can not get out much of the common. But it is not a boring movie, is not great either. Missing something to be better, perhaps best characters, none is very unforgettable, even Ellen Page. You can watch, without problems, without expecting much from him.

Two thumbs up for this film. It was all the mix of drama and comedy you could ask for in a movie. With Ellen Page on the lead and other great actors on the ensemble such as Kristen Wiig, Julliette Lewis, and Drew Barrymore. Oh and by the way, this is a "you go, girl!" kind of film. But I really think this is something for the general audience, especially those little girls who hasn't known their inner "Babe Ruthless" Recommending this, definitely.
