It was supposed to be the vacation of a lifetime in the Australian Outback -- full of fun, sun and adventure. But what happened to a trio of twenty-something backpackers took a wrenching detour into the depths of unrelenting terror. Based on true events, Wolf Creek is the haunting story of their unthinkable ordeal -- a mounting white-knuckle nightmare so real it was destined to become horror legend. (Dimension Films)

Some effective use is made of the isolated locations, but other than that this borrows rather too heavily from precursors and contains logical flaws and a sadistic predisposition that make the film less than convincing and less than appealing. Additionally, the purposeless effort expended at the film's conclusion to leave the false impression that the characters depicted were based on real people undergoing real events seems to me to be a somewhat unethical and sensationalist grab for attention.

A hateful monster of a movie. Yes, it's brutal. Yes, it's horrific. But why? And why does that guy do all those things? Too many unanswered questions, and mostly unengaging -- true torture porn.

Ugly and nihilistic. I can think of a million things I'd rather do than watch this. A particularly gruesome scene literally violates the laws of physics just to fuck over the audience and dash any small hope they might have had left. Occasionally reminded me of Funny Games, but without the postmodern winking and nodding which at least made that movie tolerable.

I didn't found it scary, however that's it. Besides that, there is NOTHING wrong with this movie. Nobody expects for a chiller like this to be so well made. The cinematograpgy was actually beautiful and I liked the score very much (it really helped in building the tension). I also liked the characters, which was the most surprising. Nice job.

What separates Wolf Creek from other torture porn flicks is the cinematography, showcasing some beautiful landscape shots and some nice sequences in the more isolated and claustrophobic locations. But at the end of the day, this is just another generic torture porn flick, with an unconvincing story and a played out climax that's particularly hell-bent on torture-porning its female characters specifically, most likely because the director has some weird fetishes he needs to sort out privately.

I regretted watching this almost immediately, but first half has enough redeeming qualities with it's shots of the outback and atmosphere that I kept with it. Once the horror aspect becomes clear, though, it's just unending hysteria interspersed with thankfully brief moments of graphic violence. This all made the second half an unnerving chore to watch. That might be a plus for some, but it's not something I have much interest in watching without other strong redeeming qualities not present here

Featuring some solid performances & a genuinely excellent one by Jarratt, as well as a real sense of dread that's rare in modern horror, it does an excellent job of creating atmosphere & tension, as well as building a villain that has gained cult status as one of the genre's most fearsome with good reason. The plot starts strong, but sadly it declines over time & by the end is pretty meh, largely due to several logic holes too big not to notice. Overall, it's still worth a watch.

On the most abstract level, the premise here is far from original - but it's always about the how. I thought McLean did well to avoid many of the genre trappings and cliches, to draw his inspiration from his native Australia and its real-life outback killers (Ivan Milat and Bradley Murdoch), and to insist on great photography (no shaky hand-held crap) and genuinely fearsome acting from his entire cast. It's a work of love, which should appeal to fans of hardcore slasher movies.

The extended build up takes too long, the victims are not engaging, and it's not as gruesome as its reputation suggests. Wolf Creek does however border on being a recommendable film, essentially on the strength of John Jarratt's villain (along with some nice outback cinematography and grimy misogynistic tenseness once it kicks off). He does nail the underlying cruel streak of some laconic larrikins, and translates that into a memorable psychotic version of the cheery exported Australian persona.

Technically, a very well made low-budget horror film which is actually kind of admirable because it takes its sweet time building things up, however it runs out of steam quickly with a 'meh' payoff. The film could have been truly interesting but is eager to become another entry into torture porn and to wrap things up rather quickly; this deserved to have another act after the carnage but sadly, no. Still, it has some chilling moments and wonderful cinematography. Worth a look but not much else.

Beautiful landscapes. The way it builds up the inescapable nature of a desert locale while having next to no horror for the first like half is amazing. The killers a little too over the top to work 100% for me, but he gets the job done.

As a horror film, Wolf Creek is pretty good, but hype killed it. It got all these reviews saying it was one of the scariest films of the year etc etc....and while it has its breif moments, it's not scary by any stretch of the imagination. Wooden acting in places, which is a shame. It's not terrible, and isn't a total waste, but it isn't anything special.

Please stop with the torture, not because I can feel the character's pain, but because it hurts the senses at this point. "Saw" finds success, and we have to roll out all these slice-and-dice movies. No thanks. Your lack of originality boggles the mind, even though it technically ain't all that bad.

Based on actual events it's hard for this not-so-very-special-but-still-entertaining-horror flick to bring anything new to the table. Characters lack depth and while charming from time to time (especially the main protagonist) offer nothing worthy of note. That being said, Wolf Creek is a mildly entertaining flick that does surprise every now and then. It certainly does not give Horror a bad name, just not a good one either. It's just 'there'.

Wondering if those who ranked this really high were watching a different movie, or if this was one of their first movies in the genre. I was 14 at the time this came out and my mom bought it. It is one of the few movies I have walked away from without watching the entire thing, but it was so boring to me. I literally went to play Bratz dolls with my younger sisters because it was more interesting than watching the movie.

Sometimes you watch movies like this. It's violent, it's gratuitous in torture and it's designed to scare you. It's supposedly based on a true story, but you go into the cinema not caring for that and you walk out later with a few shocks to retell amongst your group until you end up at home and go to sleep. You'll sleep after this film and you'll wake up some time later realising that not too much stood out for you. You may question what you have gained from your morbid curiousity. Or you wont.

Grim and pointless, as much as I approve of portrayals of rural people as in-bred sadistic woman-haters. And then there are the really bad ones. Given that the film's promotion owed something to a certain state forest, I was actually surprised when toward the end the killer turned out to have action-movie superpowers.
