This fearless comedy from producers The Farrelly Brothers asks the question: can a comedy be outlandishly off-the-wall, irreverently indelicate and yet...inspirational? The Ringer spikes the uproarious with the uplifting in a story about an ordinary man who discovers what it truly means to be special when he attempts to "fix" the Special Olympics. Horribly insulting, and not in a good way. I don't know which is worse, the fact that a grown man imitates a retard for cheap laughs, or that we're asked to believe a grown woman would believe a second of it. I'm tired of comedies that mock and humiliate their subjects for a full hour and then tack on some bullshit "tolerance" message, almost as an afterthought. They do it here with the mentally challenged and they did it in Chuck and Larry with homosexuals. The whole thing is really dishonest.

An extended South Park episode that steps into exceptionally dangerous territory and plays it yawningly safe.

Insulting in the worst way possible. It's bad enough that he imitates a mentally challenged person for laughs but the fact that the people believe he is challenged is just ridiculous. They make fun of these people for an hour then try some message which is just a poor attempt at making people think they aren't scumbags. It's really bad and Knoxville needs to stick to being a Jackass on his show.

A lot better than you'd think, this surprisingly sweet comedy refuses to compartmentalize the mentally handicapped and has an actual, genuine heart. Some jokes work less than others, but it's generally quite funny, and Knoxville is something of a revelation, to the point where Brian Cox's sleaze isn't a highlight, but in fact a bonus of sorts.

There's nothing wrong with it. It's completely watchable and occasionally engaging, often endearing but there's not a single laugh in the film. It utterly fails as comedy but it's still not bad.

Given the potentially fraught PC land-mines the premise presents, this plays things far too “safe” and down the middle – it is admirable that the supporting cast is given a decent degree of agency (and are the clear drivers of the humour, rather than the butt of the jokes), but it doesn’t necessarily make it a funny film; nice, unexpectedly understated work from Knoxville, and a hilarious bit of scene stealing from an unhinged Cox, keep it pleasant and watchable.

A surprisingly heartfelt and smart film that makes the most of a premise that wouldn't seem to go anywhere other than the toilet. What's best about this film is that the characters with actual mental handicaps figure out very early that Johnny Knoxville - as a fully functional man trying to rig the Special Olympics to help pay off a gambling debt - isn't like them at all.

Message of the movie: "special" people can be functional human beings too, if special people are presented as scripted normal actors making funny faces and having pseudo-speech impediment. Knoxville fits his role perfectly because he is pretty much mentally disabled himself.

Katherine Heigl thought Knocked Up was offensive/sexist after she saw it. I think we can attribute that to psychological projection considering she was in this steaming pile of political incorrectness just 2 years earlier. Or maybe she just straight up doesn't like retards. Actually, yeah, that's probably it.

This movie seemed like it would be extremely offensive and conroversial, but instead went ahead and got permission and approval from the Special Olympics committee. The only thing it teaches us though is that, in the end, taking advantage of mentally challenged people will work out for you in the long run.

I don't mind the exploitation of "special" people that some will bring up regarding this movie. It's just not really that funny. It's a stock story about a guy doing something horrible, then coming to a realization at the end. Even Katherine Heigl's infinite cuteness can't save this (and I like Johnny Knoxville).

Throughout their film careers, the Farrelly Brothers have consistently showcased their un-ironic affection for both toilet humor and the mentally handicapped. However, their attempt to bring the two together in this Knoxville vehicle (directed by one of their farm-team minions) fails miserably. It sounds like the most "wrong" comedy ever, but the script is completely toothless, vacillating between mocking the handicapped and telling us how awesome they are. Hypocrisy is rarely funny, and this du
