Solid any way you look at it. Awesome, intriguing plot with Matt Damon perfectly cast as Jason Bourne. Great fight scenes and action in general and it leaves a lot of mystery and questions for the viewer to wonder about, and when they do answer them in the later films they surprisingly aren't lame like in most movies. Ending is pretty lame and I wasn't too in love with the romance subplot but it serves its purpose.

Wonderful christmas movie about a workaholic who experiences memory loss and along his journey to find who he really is, discovers true love. It has quite a lot of car chases and spy action stuff but somehow never looses its simplicity and rather calm and “un-hectic” vibe. Mission Impossible meets Before Sunrise.

Boyhood loves of espionage and martial arts; mixed with latter loves of romance and continental backdrops; made into a competent, engaging film. I'm British, but this makes Bond look like a bit of a twat.

My god, I thought competent action/espionage films had died out with Ronin. This was the most pleasant surprise of 2002; I went in expecting a diversion and got something that was engaging on all levels: intellectually, emotionally, and viscerally. The bone-crunching combat was a welcome change of pace from all that floaty Hong Kong/Matrix nonsense.

Ah, sweet amnesia, can one ever tire of your charms? Run-of-the-mill, rather dreary spy movie that, contrary to what is sometimes claimed, is absurd, silly and utterly unrealistic. Very little to keep the viewer interested. Pedestrian direction. That a movie's action scenes are mediocre does not in and of itself imply that it must therefore count as "intelligent". The best defence of this franchise is probably tieman64's on IMDb, added on March 22, 2013.

So many things about this feel second hand. The rogue agent without a memory travels around Europe, which is ... nice, but not spectacular. Potente is ... cute, not gorgeous... the action scenes are... fine not super engaging... The editing is... not really that nice... and, maybe, there was a time before 'Team America' when you'd be able to watch Matt Damon without thinking just that: MAAAATT DAMOON. Well, that time has come and passed.

Top badass moment? The Mini that was old enough to have actually been in The Italian Job. So this student (can tell from the tatty jumper he’s wearing) wakes up after a heavy night drinking and can’t remember a thing. Then discovers everyone is after him. Most people would assume they’d not bought their round, or got everyone kicked out of a club, but this idiot decides he’s a secret agent, or assassin, or something. Talk about self-aggrandisement. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Way overrated. The action is mediocre, and that's the best part of the film. Half the lines in the movie are completely pointless, the bad guys are totally cliché, and Matt Damon and the girl have absolutely ZERO chemistry. Maybe the book was good, but the movie was bad bad bad.

Does not do justice to the book. The last thing I want to see is Marie St. Joseph's with a different name and a different characterization. I am sure there must have been a better way of making the film. That said, the film is fast and pacy, if you see it without reading the book first.

So over the past week I went back and rewatched the trilogy. Its interesting going back to things you were a big fan of. Does it hold up? Are there new things to appreciate? Was my young high school brain able to see through the shaky cam better? Yes to all. This is great as a standalone as the ending works. Supremecy and Ultimatum are equally fantastic aside from maybe the last 5 minutes of the latter. Cont. in pt 2

The story of a man (Matt Damon), salvaged, near death, from the ocean by an Italian fishing boat. When he recuperates, the man suffers from total amnesia, without identity or background... except for a range of extraordinary talents in fighting, linguistic skills and self-defense that speak of a dangerous past. He sets out on a desperate search-assisted by the initially rebellious Marie (Franka Potente) - to discover who he really is, and why he's being lethally pursued by assassins.

Doug Liman brings a lot of fun to the table ripping "The Bourne Identity" from its source novel and hightailing it into an exciting action film. The film, while engrossing, is actually paced out quite well, making Bourne's self-discovery its most interesting asset once the fights and chases have paid their dues.

The first of the Bourne trilogy makes a clear impact, bearing the hallmarks of a great new series of films yet to come. Taking a more realistic spin on the traditional spy movie and throwing a few spanners into the works, it makes an enjoyable viewing sporting among others one excellent chase sequence. Damon puts in a good performance as Bourne and the action is swift and the plotline slick, if a little difficult to keep fully in track with at times. A surprisingly great action thriller.

i have questions about why the CIA built a killing machine whose heartstrings can be tugged on by children (lame ass reveal), or why they seem to have borrowed their office from the local newspaper, and i wish the african dictator stuff went further and the finale wasn't franchise-baiting garbo. still the best one for its muted unease, lack of exposition, trio of strong set pieces, potente, and damon's assassin-next-door dopiness, most of which is discarded by the smug jameson bounrdne sequels.

Terrific opening to one of my favorite trilogies. Damon's Bourne is a spy unique in the genre -- cold, calm, and calculating in the most tense situations, but deeply disturbed by his lack of identity. The action itself is top notch as well.

A very fine action film loaded with kick-ass action sequences and an incredible turn from Matt Damon, who'd never ventured into Action Hero territory before. When it came out it was viewed as surprisingly realistic (by action standards), but viewed in conjunction with its sequels it's almost too slick and glossy. The cast is great and the movie is a lot of fun, but it lacks the maturity that makes Greengrass's Bournes so great. It's still a thinking man's actioner, but it could go deeper.

Just didn't really get this movie. The action scenes were a little blown out of proportion. I felt like it tried to follow the same idea as the Matrix, but for it take place in today's world and not as a scientific flick hurts it. If they cut down on the stupid fighting and stuck to just the storyline I think I would have liked it more. I am a fan of Damon but after all the good stuff I heard about it I was quite disappointed.

I love this movie. Liman directs this capably. Some of the quick edits weren't fantastic, but I was never lost in them, if you know what I mean. Damon fits the role like a glove, and the supporting cast is all really good as well. Seeing Bourne piece his past together and taking the journey with him is just so intriguing and hard to resist once you've watched the screen from the forest act to the very end. It spawned off a bunch of poor copycats, but this has aged very well regardless.

Tedious. Generic American thriller with an idiotic love story ('dangerous men are so sexy!'). Nothing makes sense, but fast enough that you don't notice when watching it with the brain half-off. We've been fed this kind of stories with nonsense and impossible technologies for decades that they've gained a sort of autonomy, they're 'normal' within these movies. And direction is so bland, so uninventive...

The Bourne Identity is a lot of fun, if not a slight bit too long for the story contained within. By the end, you won't care about the questions that get resolved, and instead will wonder what else there is to learn about Jason Bourne. I suppose that's what the first film in a series should do, so consider it a success in that regard. The ride is fun too, with solid, interesting characters taking part in entertaining action scenes.

The beginning is pretty fun and is a bit like a version of tomb raider where you never get to keep any guns you pick up. The car chase was pretty fun, especially since I THINK it was trying to pay homage to 'C'etait un rendez-vouz'. What's quite amazing though, is a protagonist who never has to make any choices; his fate is entirely a reaction to the machinations of everyone around him. Thus, ironically, he lacks identity as a character; except he really likes children, apparently. YAWN

I like Jason Bourne as a character. You can definitely see that these movies are the cause of the much grittier Daniel Craig Bond movies. There is just something about Europe as a backdrop for spy movies that just makes sense. I really liked the action scenes and the car chases. The set-up of the Bourne character is mysterious and believable. Matt Damon is a really good action star. He's good the looks, the stoic look, and he performed three action scenes flawlessly.

Damon's Bourne's first go-round is a surprisingly insipid take on the spy film, with frantic, convoluted writing attempting to mask fairly basic and rudimentary plotting at its core - the action scenes are briskly shot and staged, but an over-abundance of shaky cam (hilariously even used during one supposedly static establishing shot) makes them difficult to comprehend, and inevitably difficult to get caught up in. Damon is fine in the lead, and Cox brings some sparks to his role.
