Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
After he discovers that he's the son of the Greek god Poseidon (Kevin McKidd), 12-year-old Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) strikes out on an action-packed adventure to rescue his mortal mother and negotiate a peace treaty between his father, Zeus (Sean Bean) and Hades (Steve Coogan). Directed by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), this star-studded family tale also stars Pierce Brosnan, Rosario Dawson and Uma Thurman.

A clumsy Harry Potter knock-off with weaker source material, bland characters, and the weakest director from that other franchise. The A-list supporting cast is mostly wasted here. Bleh.

So wait... if there are roundabout 100 teenagers at the DIY LARP in the forrest, and there are 12 gods among the greek pantheon (which - due to reasons unbeknownst to men - now includes an irish lumberjack & a black man). Does that imply a freakish, early 90s knock-up party? And why did Percy never notice that his best friend is half man, half goat? How does Pierce Brosnan hide his colossal horse body? Does he bend the laws of physics or is it an intricate array of mirrors? On and on it goes...

What a terrible waste of actors like coogan, keener, bean, etc. From the film's opening the plotholes were apparent. Why was the lightning stolen? Why would poseidon's son be the main suspect? The main characters were not likeable in the least. If their constant temperment changes were supposed to emulate the gods, it worked. Columbus delivered some good effects, but overall this smacked of sub-par Harry potter. It felt rushed, probably to beat out the Clash of the Titans remake do out soon.

The idea is really cool, Greek gods in modern times, how could it go wrong? Maybe by cramming a ton of underdeveloped references into a film with a pretty meh lead. It's still a decently fun time as a PG-13 action movie that I'm sure I would have loved if I were 13, but it's a waste of potential and full of terrible dialogue.

I wouldn't call this film electrifying... or a tale for the ages... but I do like stories written by Rick Riordan. A lot of the good parts of Greek Mythology are covered. Medusa. Check. Hydras. Check. Gods. Check. Flying converse shoes? Check. Logan Lerman is lovable in this, not as much as in Perks of Being a Wallflower but he is worth cheering on. Alexandra Daddario definitely looks like she is the daughter of Athena. I was confused to see Brosnan as a Centaur. Creepy.

'The Lightning Thief' is 'Harry Potter'-lite done well enough to entertain its intended audience. This makes sense as Chris Columbus of the first two Potter installments is behind the camera. Logan Lerman as the young hero is engaging, and the supporting help from Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean, Uma Thurman and others add to the fun. Surrounded by some adequate special effects and a fittingly goofy premise, 'Percy Jackson' and his first outing deliver an entertaining family film.

With Chris Columbus directing, you know what could be a fun movie would turn out to be completely awful. Wasted talented actors, Lerman starts out bland but eventually gets the role done. There however was bad delivery + bad acting at every ill directed scene. Poorly shot action segments (the sword fights were laughably bad), plot holes an elephant would fall down and popular music that gets splashed into scenes yet does not fit the circumstances at all are just the beginning of the problems

Though this doesn't follow the book exactly, it managed to capture the overall feel of the book. Very likeable characters, good acting, a quick pace and fun script make for a very enjoyable movie! The weakest for me was, actually, the gods, but the rest of the story was highly entertaining!

Very bland and bloodless filmmaking (much like the first two Harry Potters, from the same director) but I dunno, I didn't hate it by any means. A few neat action scenes, some magic spells, Rosario Dawson shows up looking super fine. I probably would have loved it if I was fifteen years younger.

While not as awful as it could have been, it squandered a lot of potential in clunky dialogue and under-utilized performers. Maybe they wouldn't have been able to afford the stars if they had more than cameo roles but it would have been nice to have one solid villain rather than a bunch of quickly defeated ones. Many of the action sequences were one-note and drawn out, room could have been easily made for more depth everywhere else.

I keep reading it as “Oxygen Thief”… Umpteen effort to cash-in on Potter mania has the tiredness of a cast and crew going through the motions – Columbus’s flat and uninspired direction relies on his cast's star personas to breathe some oxygen into proceedings: Brosnan maintaining his dignity sitting on the back end of a horse comes off best, though Coogan seems to be enjoying himself as Hades – the too vividly dark and ugly stuff with Pantoliano leaves a slightly unpleasant aftertaste.

Despite its ludicrous title and some dips in the scenario, it's actually a fairly inventive story, in a Ghostbusters kind of way. Couldn't make my mind what to think of Pearce Brosnan as a Centaur. And Lerhman as a 12 year old going on (a pretty flat) 18 was something of a detraction. But what the hell, if you can't teach teenagers Greek Mythology in Latin class, send 'em to see this as a primer. Better than most teen slasher/action flicks coming out.

It's a decent enough fantasy action movie. A good popcorn flick, as they say. Not particularly intelligent, but some cool monsters, a few good action scenes, and nice special effects. It felt like it wanted to be more, but it was let down by a bit too much American ego, an acute case of "the world revolves around the main character" and said main character sometimes being downright dumb.

There can be only one! Oh, sorry. Wrong movie. Percy Jackson walks on the footsteps of Harry Potter. Only the target audience is a bit older and the inspiration was taken from Creek gods and mythology. But this is cool: there's no blood, no killing, no sex and no bad language. Well, one character will be killed but that's for continuity. I was impressed only one place: Underworld. And Hades was not bad looking guy in his real appearance among the fires.

Entertaining in some respects, with great special effects. I'd lose count of the plot holes that make this film ridiculous... and we're talking well beyond the odd premise to begin with. Pretty empty, not memorable. ... And Percy's supposed to be 12? You feel like he's about 17 in here.

This film starts of so ridiculous.. Zeus seems to be a grumpy 50 year old man in his midlife crisis, there are countless plotholes in the story and oh my those dialogues were hidious. The acting really sucked by the way. However, you could still enjoy this film. It was quite entertaining as long as you didn't take the story too serious, because it defenitely isn't. Just switch your brains off and this one is enjoyable, especially when you like mythology.

Way too fast paced. I am also forced to wonder if they read the books, the mythology, or rewatched it after they put it all together. I would appreciate someone telling me why Poseidon felt the need to walk out of the ocean very, very large when he was going to a meeting that was clearly meant to be at least mildly incognito.

Wannabe Harry Potter franchise (just the title gives that away) by way of mutilating Greek mythology. Fortunately there's enough good FX and good performances (especially Brandon T. This film could be great but the story is incomprehensible most of the time if you didn't read the book. Some of the characters and the events were changed and it ruined the film. The songs chosen didn't fit with the type of the story. And one of the worst mistakes committed was the young actors.Although they did a good acting, the age of the kids in the book was 11 years old and they were too old to play the demigods. Also, some important characters for exemple Clarisse,Percy's enemy at camp.

If there's anything we all can take away from Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, it's that God (with a capital G) is nothing like the silly Greek gods who play havoc with human life, jealously accuse one another and then savagely attack. Their neglected demigod kids must study and train to tackle their preternatural parents' pettiness. God's children don't have to. In fact, He fights for them. (pluggedin.com)

Why, oh why, does Hollywood feel that it has to change/omit almost every element of their source material when adapting a novel when making a movie. From eliminating characters, to eliminating plot points, to adding unneccessary elements, to completely changing the ending to make it into a huge action set-piece!!!!!!! WTF is wrong with keeping true to source material? Other than that, it's a barely passable movie.

It would be hard to conceive a more painful introduction to Greek mythology. Or reintroduction, even more. The language is appallingly banal even for a movie populated with teenagers and targeted to their juniors: "Check this out," as an example, gets spoken no fewer than three times during the visit to Medusa's lair and twice more in its immediate sequel. The computer-generated Fury, Minotaur, Hydra, etc., interject only technology, no magic.

Script is pretty bad & the dialogue is useless, but there's some interesting ideas going on here. They should have fully embraced the potential for PG-13, or otherwise made it more kid friendly because it gets lost in a weird middle place. Some genuinely dark and scary moments (featuring solid CGI & character design) can't save characters that are supremely underdeveloped. Lerman, who is very talented, is not used to his potential. There is hope for the franchise but better direction is needed.
