Masturbation jokes. Fart jokes. Is it the latest installment in the Porky's series? No, it's just dumb ol' Amarcord. Fellini presents a series of anecdotes that are neither amusing nor charming, nor particularly interesting.

The mother of all interlocking movies. Fascinating in all the different stories, Fellini manages to portrait a town and make it seem like the viewer also lived in it. Nostalgic is the best word to describe this amazing movie.

By turns dull, disgusting and juvenile. If anyone ever says Fellini's just high brow artsy stuff you can show them this because the humor is as low-brow as it gets: Fart jokes, sex jokes, really jokes about any kind of bodily functions permeate the entire movie and not a single one is worth even a chuckle. As for the the rest of the movie's content it's weak, disjointed and boring and, frankly, at times insulting. The photography is the only good thing here, but even that's only above average.

for a movie with almost no cohesive plot, this one hit the nail right on the head. an absolutely stunning piece of work, beautiful, well acted, written, and the direction is paramount. i almost think that if this did have a traditional plot it might not be as good as it is now, and it is good.

I actually prefer Fellini's more straightforward 1950s movies to these later ones, but the originality and audacity of a film like Amarcord is unquestionable. As its name suggests, this movie is essentially its author's memories put to celluloid. In a way that is typical of memories - not a memoir or diary but memories - they are haphazard, disordered, and not necessarily sharp or accurate. But Fellini succeeds in relating these particular memories in all the power that they have for him.

Americans specially loved Amarcord. Compared with American films of the mid-1970s, it was so optimistic, so serene in believing that all things shall pass. Thew word amarcords means "I remember," but the mood of the film is more that of someone saying "I wonder," trying to forget harsh times or ugly truths. Fellini was once a real social observer and storyteller. Here he is a mere collector of material. It is startlingly devoid of drama or self-criticism. And it begins to look very old-fashioned

It's beautifully nostalgic but Fellini goes for the throat as he satirizes Italy's fascist past, a ludicrous, hypocritical Catholic Church and a nation in perpetual adolescence. The interlocking ensemble is effortlessly handled with an immense elegance, and especially the scenes with the family are funny as hell. Woody Allen's "Radio Times", and perhaps every other childhood memoir film since, owes a great deal to this masterpiece.

One of my favorite films of all time. Fellini said it was about the eternal adolescence in Italy, and certainly with the lusty scenes and juvenile humor, that's about right. But it's mostly about memory -- how we remember people and places. This story unfolds the way your imagination does when someone tells you a story -- things are a bit exaggerated but it all makes sense. This film is one of the reasons why Fellini was born for the cinema and stands above many other filmmakers.

I don't begrudge an occasional fart joke, but jeez, Fellini, ease up a bit, maybe? That aside, it's usually a pretty charming look at adolescence, playing out in episodic form (some episodes stronger than others), that coalesces into a pretty effective coming-of-age tale. I can't think of many films that think with their dicks as much as this one does. And damn if Fellini can't make Italy look every bit as purty as I've always thought it to be.

Anecdotal coming-of-age story heightened by an exaggerated sense of nostalgia, giving it an amusing cartoon quality. Fellini is notorious for his indulgence, but in this case there's nothing pretentious about it. How can it be, with so many sex gags and fart jokes? High comedy this ain't, but Fellini treats it with personal affection.

The last half hour is great, but the rest is bogged down by toilet humor and boring teenage jackassery to be truly engaging. The lack of a unifying plot or vignette is also quite frustrating, and leaves the film rather underwhelming as a whole.

Basically, you are dropped into a foreign, a bit wacky town and you slowly make sense of it all. Everybody somehow belongs there and it creates an instant warmth that you can feel; even though deep inside you know the horrible background to those days. You might not like it, but it is surely memorable.

There’s some solid satire/critique of fascism and Catholicism in here, and some really wonderful imagery. Unfortunately it’s let down by a significant amount of weird juvenile lewd stuff - which isn’t inherently bad, but it’s all such a gross caricature and ends up being neither funny nor interesting - and some awful performances.

fellini seems to be saying that the hedonistic nature of italitan society at the time, particularly their sexual libertinism, was partly to blame for the rise of fascism. recalls pasolini a touch, but one has to wonder whether this lustrous illustriousness was a reality, or simply a myth made by our moviemakers. some very strange sequences, but they don't all work, and the film doesn't make too much sense as a whole. great music as usual.

Not recommended if you are the least bit tired or if you believe that a plot is a bare necessity. In fact, I'm not sure that I would recommend this to anybody who's not already a fan of Fellini's. To those interested in checking out his oeuvre, I would say that 'La Strada' and 'La dolce vita' would be the best place to start.

One of Fellini's most earnest and, ultimately, better pictures -the loose structure, despite being mainly responsible for the film's plentiful dull spots, is also its main asset. Most of the characters and incidents are interesting, the lowbrow humour works and the quiet nostalgic/optimistic vibe throughout is subdued enough to become pleasant.

The resulting lack of a driving narrative does harm it some, but at the same time there's enough entertainment and nostalgic tone here to last, though it does slump a bit in the later half. And come on, there's nothing wrong with a good fart joke, or ten.

The grandfather whistling while fisting the air at the dinner table, the old woman leaving the theatre exclaiming she had a good cry... There's hilarity in this movie that only grows with each viewing, not to mention it's beautifully scripted, shot and edited. Yet another classic from our man.

Legger seg tett opp mot hans liv (som så mange andre av filmene hans) og minnene han har fra da han vokste opp i en mindre italiensk landsby. Svært nostalgisk, og fortelleren som går gjennom fungerer som et slags knutepunkt for seeren. Cinematografien er som alltid nydelig, men denne gangen i farger. Fellini kler virkelig det, må få sett flere av de senere filmene hans i nær fremtid.

There's a tension here and maybe I missed a lot, but the nostalgia tends to let too much of the fascism slide by. Interesting to see Radio Days (much better film IMO) and The Grand Budapest Hotel/Moonrise Kingdom connections. The frank portrayal of the body and sexuality is welcomed. Americans share much today with these Italian characters.

Acho que esse foi o primeiro Fellini que vi na vida nos anos 90, acho também que gostava mais dele antigamente do que gosto agora, antes o colocava no mesmo nível de Otto e Mezzo, mas nessa revisão não me parece mais que são tão equivalentes. I just don't get Fellini, I think. The first 40 minutes of this film is a lot of bathroom humor, which I don't really like even when it's done well. The first third seems more fit for an especially bad Adam Sandler film or something. The last 80 minutes are definitely an improvement, and there are moments where it threatens to become interesting, but it was too episodic with not enough of the episodes being compelling. There are some strong scenes and it's technically solid, though.

a film filled with delightful, humorous, sad and beautiful scenes. I especially enjoyed the first part with the bonfire and the last half hour of the movie. in between there are, I am sad to say, a few too many scenes that just became lost in the masses. I suppose that in one way is the point here, seeing as how Fellini created this photobook of memories from his childhood for the viewer to devour on. I still believe it could have lost 20 minutes or so in length.

My least favorite Fellini movie, in which he probably tried to be the most "mature" - not making too much of a spectacle, being compassionate towards his own tendency to make fart jokes, summoning things up... It's reaking of self-satisfaction and rarely comes out of it's own skin, and I could just see Federico watching this at the premiere and patting his belly. I'm being harsh because he's one of my favorite directors.
