I love the epic scope of the movie. Olmos actually worked with local LA gangs to get unprecedented access for film locations and consultants. And it shows in the realism and grittiness of the whole film.

Depressing gang movie is well made and well acted. It is a bit slow at times, but Olmos is engaging.

Proving it a bad idea to base a movie on an active contemporary gang, Olmos caused at least two of his gang-member script consultants to be murdered and risked his own hide. Overlooking that, it's an impressive directorial debut for an actor, with rather gut-wrenching violence. Not all plot elements integrate well to form a story arc, Olmos' own character enjoys a little too much spotlight even as a protagonist, and the conclusions seemed a bit too easy to me, but the film is affectingly gritty.

Absolutely brutal and honest portrayal of the Mexican Mafia. Olmos puts in his best performance here.

I enjoyed it. One of the more underrated crime films...although solving every problem with rape wasn't really what I was expecting. Brutal.

It's about a hispanic mans life mostly spent in prison, and how he copes outside of the prison walls after spending most of his adult life there.

Intense and much more realistic than Blood in Blood Out. It shows you how a man can slowly kill himself throughout his life.
