Much like Wrath of Khan, this film understands that Trek movies benefit from a strong villain who challenges its humanist vision of the future. That starts with using the Borg as a monster who overtakes the Enterprise. But it's escalated by utilizing Moby Dick's Ahab narrative to challenge Picard's evolved sensibilities. The picture is brilliant as a drama about a man suffering from PTSD. But its action, set pieces, and horror put it up there with Alien and The Thing. Highly recommended.

It can't help but fall into Action Picard silliness. The Borg are Space Zombies who will time travel to nix your entire species but only give you a stinkeye in the hallway. It's a dumb plot. But after Generations the quality of Frakes' direction is night and day. The humor is underplayed, the casts gets to act. It looks crisp and stylish. A drunk, vulgar Zefram Cochrane appears to invoke Roddenberry worship/whitewashing ("I didn't build this ship to better humanity, I did it to make money!")

Certainly the best Star Trek film from the Next Generation crew and a serious contender for the best overall movie. It works as part of the legacy and stand alone. Great special effects, elaborate costume set and design, decent script and plot some subtle references to previous back stories and genuine development of the characters. The borg are a huge bonus and genuinely terrifying in concept. A very good Star Trek movie.

I was pretty frustrated with Worf being kind of shoehorned into the plot, but I regretted that about 30 minutes later when his first reaction to a Borg drone was to smash the everloving fuck out of its face with the butt of a rifle. Never change, Mr. Worf.

Hugely overrated film that reinvents Star Trek as a dumbed down action movie lacking any of the interesting idea from the movie it desperately wants to be, Wrath Of Khan. Only Picard and Data receive any kind of focus from the script and Picard is wildly out of character even when factoring in his relationship with the Borg. The Borg themselves lose everything that made them genuinely scary in the TV show and are reinvented as every sci-fi bad guy ever. Yet another stupid time travel plot too.

Having just finished binge-watching all of TNG, I've decided to tackle the movies. No burying the lead - straight Borg, baby. The Enterprise-E is a badass ship. The opening is a little rushed; evidence that Frakes wanted to get the meat of the story out there as quickly as possible. Speaking of Frakes, he has a specific directorial style that really works for me. The DataSex and Zero-G fight are forgivably wonky. I've always loved the Borg/Moby Dick metaphor. A definite upgrade from Generations.

Generic television inflated for the big screen. Plot and concepts are silly and uninteresting. The only characters who receive any focus are Cochrane and Picard: the former is an unconvincing scientist or engineer of some kind; in the latter case, Stewart does quite well, but the theme of overcoming past trauma is very conventional and it turns out, strangely, that Picard was right to assert that the Enterprise did not need to be destroyed. I guess the rest of the crew were cowards after all.

A slam bang whizpopper of a explosive franchise filled with stunning stars splayed across the screen! Okay, maybe not. Probably the only decent thing to come out of the entire 'Next Generation' catalog other than Deep Space 9. It's the first movie I ever saw in the theater 3 times, so nostalgia is certainly a thing, but it's also tightly plotted, looks good, and its characters are well put together, making it better than half the other Star Trek films.

See it as an extended episode, and you won't be disappointed. Maybe it's just me, but Worf's super-slow-mo zero-gravity cut 'n slash scuffle with the Borg drone brought back fond memories of Kirk's epic sludge-fest with the lizard man.

Though purists might balk at compromises made when translating TNG to the big screen, it is futile to resist STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT. The movie essentially silos two separate stories--a cheerfully humorous time travel fable, and a suspenseful action yarn with a serious philosophical bent--and somehow makes them even more compelling. It's a film with an addictive rhythm, thanks to a dexterous script, excellent performances, and clever visual craftsmanship.

It's hard to tell whether the cry "Resistance Is Futile" is coming from the Borg, or the Trek franchise itself, as this installment may well bring in new "Trekkers" with its "less techno-babble, more action" approach and the fact that this crew can act. Trademark effects, humor, and idealism are in abundant supply.

Unlike the other (good) Star Trek films, First Contact isn't really about anything. There's no broader ideas at play, no exploration of humanity; it's a simple sci-fi action film about shooting evil aliens, but it works. Successfully delivers popcorn entertainment, with a clean, cohesive, tightly-plotted story, and decent directing from Frakes. The best of the TNG films by a long-shot, and the only one that's worth watching for casual fans.

The best Star Trek film of the modern era, and maybe second only to Wrath of Khan as the best ever. It feels like a real movie and not just an extended episode, which is more than you can say for most Trek efforts. Frakes makes the most of the budget, creating a Borg threat both visually awesome and frightening. Cromwell is a great addition to the cast, and pitted against a personal foe, Stewart takes Picard to dark and flawed extremes. Great character arcs here, it's just a joy to watch.

I had to join in and watch this film for "First Contact Day." The fact I know it's "First Contact Day" reveals I have a Star Trek bias, and of course, I enjoyed it. I think what makes this film special is they brought the pacing and chemistry from the TV show.

Frakes's direction is strong and confident, bringing a nice, creepy touch of horror to the Trek universe, following in the tradition of the second-in-command being the one to truly know and understand how a good Star Trek movie should play. One of the better Trek films. While Shatner obviously had a ton of charisma, he couldn't carry a film with his performance like Patrick Stewart does in this one. His scenes with Worf and the lady from the 21st Century (forgot her name) as he debates whether to blow up the Enterprise were high points in Star Trek acting. It also seems like the budget was increased in this one or the revolution in special effects that the 90s brought were first realized in a Trek film.

To people who followed the Next Generation crew through the years of its television run, this was the apex of the series, bringing to the fore the zombie-like borg which parasitically hijacks both organic and synthetic in a very tense plot involving their invasion and subsequent siege of the Enterprise. Even after viewing Star Trek '09, which was excellent, this is still my favorite film of the franchise (and definitely the darkest).

A good looking film and Picard with a tommy gun almost makes up for all the cheesy lines...almost. If you've enjoyed Star Trek: The Next Generation then you'll enjoy this, but if not then it's safe to pass on this otherwise fairly pedestrian (though inoffensive) story.

Easily one of the best Star Trek films. The editing is on point. Seriously. There were three storylines going on simultaneously (like Inception), and they flowed together like MAGIC. You never were lost as to what was going on with any character, which means the editor did a fantastic job. It also took a giant leap forward in looking better than any of the others at this point. It's crazy, because the next movie is easily one of the worst for pretty much being the opposite of this film.

Pretty fun with some great scenes, but I don't think it's fully deserving of its reputation. The setup is incredibly rushed and there are several instances where it feels like scenes are missing. In contrast, the second half is more settled but at the cost of dragging by comparison. All that aside, Patrick Stewart is great, the Borg are a killer antagonist and everything with Data is pretty interesting. If you can kick back & blind yourself to time travel illogicality, then it's a good time.

Having no familiarity with the characters, I can say the film is capable of being effective as a standalone, but much of the appeal probably does lie in familiarity. I could feel a lot of references falling flat and much of the acting and dialogue is stilted and in this no man's land of trying to be serious and cheeky. The narrative is decent enough, but not so much that it can carry the film. As I got used to it I was able to enjoy it somewhat, at least.

Arguably the best Star Trek film. For those who highly acclaim the newest 2009 film, give this a shot. There's definitely a lot more practical sense and connectivity. Not infesting with constant inconsistencies and boring plot, First Contact offers admirable character development and pacing...for a Star Trek film.

First Contact feels like 'The Wrath of Khan' of the Next Generation run. Some would argue that this films predecessor Generations didn't do the Next Generation TV series justice. But this is a worthy and incredibly entertaining Star Trek feature film. The Borg are great villains and the score is one of the best of the series. This was the peak for the Next Genereration films and the cast, characters, plot, action, humour and overall enjoyment make this a well rounded Star Trek adventure.

A pretty pedestrian time travel plot device, an essentially uninteresting and one dimensional James Cromwell and a few weak points with overly cliche dialogue... Despite these factors this film is well done and more than entertaining. What they got right was the creepiness of the Borg, Picard's and Data's stories woven into the main plot and executing both a stand-alone film and addition to the Star Trek franchise.

"I am Borg" seems to be a contradiction to the whole idea of being a borg, but if they're all just ants then who makes the decisions? I suppose I could ask the same about ants. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the movie. I'm sure I'll watch it again in a few years.

The best TNG movie by far and also one of the best Star Trek movies overall. Maybe not the customary TNG morale tale, but a very entertaining action flick.

This Star Trek fan favorite hasn't aged all that well. The special effects weren't that great back in '96 but they look terrible now. The borg cube looks like a pretty obvious model on a green screen background. The story is alright but James Cromwell's "hip" eccentric character acting is played out and it reminds you of how many bit roles like this he's been in other films in the last 10 years. Overall, it's a decent film for Star Trek.
