Don Bluth's big "up yours" to Disney. Those expecting a super-happy-fun time will be surprised by the seriousness and pathos on display here - I doubt we'll ever see another mainstream American animated film so ambitious. (We sure didn't with the sequel.)

I just watched it now in 2009, so I have no childhood memories or nostalgia for it, and I thought it was pretty good. The best parts are Fievel falling off the ship and the "Somewhere Out There" song. As a cat person I get a little tired of them being Hollywood's de facto demonized animal, but other than that, I enjoyed it. I love how the main family's name is "Mousekewitz," that would be like if my name was "Humankewitz."

Joke's on you, Fievel, 'cause I've got it on good authority that there are hell of cats in America. Well, I guess you found that out yourself.

I enjoyed this upon first watch. It's sad and cute and endearing and a classic. Well animated, and musically it's good as well. Will revisit for a better review.

A true American children's classic. Don Bluth at his filmmaking peak. They need to make children's movies like this again.

Moves much too quickly throughout (Fievel and Tiger's friendship duet seems a little premature), which makes it difficult to appreciate any of the secondary characters in particular, but each scene, however brief, communicates effectively an aspect of the surprisingly serious immigration (see Fievel's separation) turned searching for family (see the moments of dramatic irony in New York) plot. Nice animation and a few fun songs ("There's No Cats in America" is a highlight) round out the film.

Swinging from gushy mawkishness ("somewheeere out there") to bleak and oppressive ugliness, this is a strange, sort of fascinating misfire in that Bluth (and Spielberg) appear to have gone into this with their hearts firmly on sleeves, but then want to turn coy about the story they are trying to tell. A solid voice cast helps, with DeLuise and Kahn standing out; it might have been nice to have heard a little more from Plummer's boisterous French owl. All told, more interesting than successful.

An American Tail is a cute story about family and dreams of a better life. Like with most of Don Bluth'sfeatures, the voice acting and animation are outstanding, and the style can get pretty intense at times. Fortunately for children, the charming characters and happy ending helped this film to become a family classic. Really good!

Probably my least favorite classic Bluth. I'm watching it for the first time in 2012, with only the trailer that used to be on my Land Before Time VHS for nostalgic value, but I can enjoy a film aimed at children without having seen it as a kid just as much as I did back then, unfortunately this didn't really do it for me. There isn't a lot of charm, there aren't any heart wrenching/warming scenes and nothing is memorable. The animation and music are great though. Storm scene was fantastic.

You know, I have a tendency to like dark, harsh kids' movies, but even I found this one a bit much at times. There are some unbelievably depressing parts in this movie, including an image towards the end that will never leave my memory. But it's okay, because there's a happy ending, right?

Having watched the sequel several times as a child, I caught this one for the first time around age 20, and loved it a lot more than the one with "nostalgia value." All the music's better and more fitting, the whole plot and conflict make more sense, and everything was on an overall grander scale. Probably my favorite Don Bluth movie.

In America, little Fievel Mousekewitz learns while growing up in Russia in 1885, "there are no cats. And the streets are paved with cheese." This establishes, immediately and neverendingly, the monotonous pattern of rodentized clichés and stereotypes: especially ethnic clichés and stereotypes, Jewish, Irish, French, Italian. There has been no reduction in the fearful sentimentality customary under the aegis of Steven Spielberg, and there has been an addition of shameless flag-waving.
