As many times as I've seen this it still charms and delights. The four central characters are examples of absolutely perfect casting, the music and dance is spellbinding, and the film manages to suck you right into the world of Oz. I do have to say, however, that I find most of the Munchkinland sequence to be annoying, and the "King of the Forest" scene a bit dull and out of place. But when a movie can warm your heart as much as this, a few quibbles can be overlooked.

Despite the great sets, make-up and songs, I couldn't escape an uneasy feeling when Dorothy without thinking twice entered a strange man's mobile home, after which she started imagining tornadoes and midgets and brightly colored infrastructure. I think Professor Marvel totally slipped her some magic mushrooms, in all honesty. It would explain the flying monkeys at least.

Though there were color films before it, this was one of the widest seen color movies. Do you think those audiences had insane expectations for the future of color movies. I bet those first audiences thought every movie would be like this. It's 70 some years later and they still rarely make movies this colorful.

No one can argue that this is a classic American film. It's a genuinely beautiful film full of memorable characters and songs. It also sports a good theme about the importance of people working together and also finding their own strength during hardships. Awesome!

Therefore, as someone who doesn't care to understand the technical subtleties that make Citizen Kane the generally accepted best film ever, I nominate this as the greatest movie of all time. 3 generations from now CK will still be a film class staple while The Wizard of Oz will still be a living room staple.

Why was I shown 'The Ten Commandments' repeatedly when I was a kid instead of this? A true classic in every sense of the word, both invigorating and highly entertaining. An almost perfect combination of enthralling visuals (talk about set design) and engrossing narrative, accompanied with a perfect dash of characterization. I hate musicals and sure, it had its corny bits, but hearing Judy Garland sing 'Over the Rainbow' put a huge smile on my face. Recommended!

Wasn't expecting much rewatching this with adult eyes but was still blown away. It's trippy to think this classic came out in nineteen fuckin thirty nine! The surreal visuals, quirky characters, and timeless performances are still memorable. You know everyone in those hot ass costumes had a miserable time though. Watching european munchkins sing and dance never gets old either and I doubt we'd see such a mass deployment of midget performers these days without people crying about exploitation.

Oz is an excellent fairy tale land. The characters are perfect in their stupid simplicity. The songs are awesome. Some of the special effects hold up surprisingly well, although most of them are rather transparent to a modern audience. The costumes, the set design and the Technicolor, however, are impeccable. The film may not be quite as grand and extraordinary as it strives to be, but I say it comes close enough.

Was finally forced to sit down and watch this, never having seen it even as a child. Of course The Wizard of Oz has permeated popular culture to such an extent that it's only rivaled by Star Wars, so not much happened that was a surprise to me. Munchkinland seared my brain though, that was intense. Also in one scene the Scarecrow or the Tin Man has a gun in his hand, what was up with that. Overall too cute and garish for me to enjoy, suffers from a lack of associated nostalgia.

Possibly the most recognizable and iconic movies ever made, I'd guess almost every scene in the movie has been parodied or copied at some point since. The switch from black and white to colour is a brilliant moment, the sets are vibrant and imaginative, the special effects are good for their time, the songs are memorable and the cast are all perfectly cast. The Wizard Of Oz is one of the most important movies in cinema history, a classic in every sense of the word.

The way it`s structured is kind of genius, and Dorothy`s companions are played in such as way that we can see the rules of this world just through their physical mannerisms. I hope that makes sense. The movie never gets bogged down explaining everything, and just launches us into this fantasy setting at full speed. You`ve got to give it points for that. I`m not convinced that Judy Garland was a very good actor, but who cares.

What this film achieved both technically & visually in 1939 is truly staggering. And many would argue that there hasn't been a piece of filmmaking as monumental or groundbreaking since. With it's timeless storytelling, themes, characters & songs; The Wizard of Oz remarkably continues to reintroduce itself to generation after generation.

A girl dreams about killing her neighbor in the ultimate psychodrama. One of David Lynch's horcruxes. There's so much charm in the fantastic sets, physicality of the three companions, and good dog moments; but the highlight is that ode to technicolor escape, Over the Rainbow, my favorite original film song. I recommend Sarah Vaughan's version. Oz is not without flaws (munchkin song is wholly unintelligible) but none drag it down. Fiction and dreams are real transformative places.

The original fantasy adventure epic, and one of the most perfectly crafted kids' movies ever. Memorable characters, great songs, a scary-ass villain, all anchored by Judy Garland's charming performance. The melting of the witch at the end scared the holy crap out of me when I was a really little kid. That was some gruesome shit.

another classic movie. Funny story here while I have a chance. My dad loves this movie, and my brother was afraid of the witch. So this was back in the late 80s when everything was on VHS. Well one day my brother decided to defeat the wicked witch by taking scissors and cutting up the VHS tape. Although he won the battle he did not win the war.

But it also seems to add layers of subliminal meaning - perhaps its about turn of the century American economic politics? Visually gorgeous with songs that are instantly memorable, helped by Garland's voice that eschews the high-pitched female vocals of the time and delivers some really soulful melodies. The story is fun, and filled with loads of absurdist throwaway gags that would probably be called "post-modern" these days. It's sometimes easy to mock films of an earlier time for a supposed lack of sophistication, but this is as clever, funny and entertaining as anything Hollywood is producing these days.

Watching it as part of my chronological project through the years and see it in context with it's contemporary releases, it becomes so extremely clear that Oz is such a different creature to anything else being made in Hollywood at the time. The songs, the wonderful colors, the impressive effects and the perfect casting, all comes together for a film for the ages! A film all in the family can watch and enjoy.

Woah. This is subversive shit. The upper class (Glinda) tricks the working class (proletarian factory worker Tin Man, farmer Scarecrow, soldier Lion, and Dorothy who's the victim of both class, gender and age discrimination) into killing or chasing off the competition (the other witches and the wizard). Dorothy is told it's for her own good, and to be happy with what she's got (oppressive rich neighbours and all), while Glinda gets to rule supreme. The American dream or Marxist propaganda?

It's difficult to judge as "just" a movie. It's just such a huge part of our culture that it's hard to view objectively and outside of its cultural context. In fact, I ranked about 300 movies before I even THOUGHT of "Wizard." It's more of an institution or cultural touchstone than a movie, and I think that might be the biggest compliment I could pay it.

Rewatch. I forgot how long the sepia sequence take at the beginning. I'd prefer cutting most of that out since it just takes away from the subsequent journey as products of Dorothy's imagination. The songs are memorable. The sets are absolutely gorgeous and creative to expand the landscape beyond a tiny stage. Pity what happened to Judy Garland. Fav scene: absolutely world-changing to go from sepia to color and then the entire Munchkin sequence.

We all remember the music and tale of this story, and the musicals that have been created as a result of the highly acclaimed movie. Musicals such as Wicked and Michael Jacksons not so great musical, The Oz. The Wizard of Oz is a great movie with a wonderful cast. Judy Garland was such a talented person and was perfect for the roll of Dorothy.

A quintessential example of movie magic. I was blown away (not by a tornado) by the effects of this movie for it coming out in 1939. I also loved the mix of black and white with color filming. The music is catchy and the choreography is fun. Judy Garland is beautiful. This film just contains a certain magic that you wish you could just bottle up and carry with you. Definitely deserves to be in the top 100 best movies of all time.

There are plenty of great things about it - "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is wonderful, Judy Garland is very charming, the transition from sepia to Technicolor is magical and the Technicolor looks stunning even 70 years later. But damn it's SO kitsch. So very garish and unpleasant, in particular Munchkinland which was so annoying and offensive to the senses.

Not everything works -- some of the songs are not as well known as "Over the Rainbow" for good reason (e.g., the one sung by Lion about being King of the Forest), and how kiddified everything is gets irritating sometimes. However, most of it holds up surprisingly well, despite the extreme familiarity of the material. Garland is perfect in the lead, and I could listen to her sing all day

If you're gonna put on Dark Side of the Moon while you watch it, synch it so that as soon as the door opens on the first color scene to be the cash register of 'Money.' Mute the actual movie. Let the album loop, too, because there are some weird synchs after the first play. Like, the end/start of the album is a heartbeat, and it ends during the Tin Man's intro, who needed a heart. That's just creepy.

If I was, as the saying goes, "trapped on a deserted island" and only had one movie to watch, this would be it. Stellar performances even by the secondary cast, and a good story based off of the popular children's book, fine music, and visuals that still look good today. WHat else could you want?

A delightful, visually stunning and heartbreaking story. What is more interesting, maybe, is not the funny fantasy for kids or the magical characters, but the dark, weird, menacing tone that underlies the whole picture. That's why this is still the perfect family movie, which communicates easily with children and adults' fears and desires.

When the best performance is by a dog you might have done something wrong. There are a handful of good scenes and the movie flows nicely but mostly it's just nonsensical drivel. Endlessly recycling the same few songs gets grating quickly. Liking this mindless romp appears to have been integrated into the American cultural hegemony which is a laugh in itself.
