This is less about the serial killer portrayed but more about our fascination with exploitative violence and voyeurism. There are a variety of messages in the film itself but it also unashamedly plays with our emotions in exploring the grim subject matter as befitting any dark comedy. I admit I laughed at what I saw on screen, so what does that say about me?

Stunning, shameless, and beautifully subversive. It's amorality and perversity is sickening and contemptible. It is a piece of art straight from the school of Decadents. "Pour epater le bourgeois."

Brilliant black comedy filmed in stylish black-and-white. At times it does make you wonder if you really should be laughing at the things you are witnessing and sometimes you really cannot laugh anymore when things get a bit too disturbing. I guess it takes a bit of a strange sense of humor to get this one.

The subject matter is absolutely vile, but it's so hard to look away. Does a great job at involving the audience and making them feel like guilty participants. The scenes with the camera crew becoming involved in, ahem, the action are extra disturbing for some reason. After a while the gruesomeness becomes a bit repetitive, and since the film doesn't really have a lot of forward momentum it starts to drag a bit around the middle. Ends the only way it can.

A uniquely weird found footage-mockumentary that stretches believability more and more as it goes along (the reactions at the dinner is, for example, really far out). Initially, I was unsure when and if it was going for satire because it's so damn dark, and that ambiguity added considerably to the unease of the hideous subject matter. 'Man Bites Dog' is an interesting and quite clever film which, although it does have a short running time, could have done with some tightening.

Amongst the blackest of black comedies with it's fake documentary style and killings that are startling. The documentary framing does allow for an examination of the film's content in a way most black comedies can't, and I think it's to the film's benefit.

A very interesting low budget effort. It relies a lot on its brutality and the psychopathy of its protagonist to put the viewer in an uncomfortable place and it does its job fairly well in that regard, however, it isn't a stand-out in any other regard, the message it makes is poignant and left me thinking afterward, but I wasn't terribly consumed by the film itself. A good piece, very effectively made and put together, but simply not outstanding. Still worth a watch.

This movie has a great and interesting concept but it doesn't really work as a movie. This film like Natural Born Killers which it reminds me of both fail for the same reason, they bore me. I'm not shocked, sickened, outraged or anything from watching this movie. The Black humor fell flat for me. Once again I just don't really seem to like most French Cinema.

This Belgian creative trio pre-empted the wave of mockumentaries and reality TV that came after 2000 with this jet black satire about violence in society and the media. It's pretty engaging at the beginning, like watching a car crash as you observe this character's psychopathic deeds and casual wisecracks, and wonder when his comeuppance will arrive. As it goes on it stalls a little, and my interest began to wane... but still commendable, noteworthy and important. Worth a rewatch.

If this had been played completely straight, it would have crashed and burned pretty terribly. As a blacker than black comedy, however, it works pretty well. It's refreshing to see a very innovative use of the "found footage"-esque style before mainstream cinema took it out back and shot it.

Macabre, hilarious, and intelligent, Man Bites Dog is an outstanding black comedy. The faux-documentary concept was handled flawlessly and there were some incredibly well-shot scenes (the factory scene, especially). Poelvoorde's acting in the lead role is nothing to be overlooked, either. The main ideas and themes aren't anything innovative, but it was just executed so well that I can forgive that aspect. It's a good'n.

This is a great training movie. It has a lot of useful information: how much weight do you need to add when you are trying to sink a body of a child, old person, woman... What's the best time to kill a postman. When to eat clams and when not to. A really profound and well made documentary about a normal guy who can offer wisdom to every one of us.

It's definitely something else, and therefore quite memorable. It has a strange feel to it, that takes the seriousness out of even the seemingly serious scenes - something that probably comes from the interesting mix of found footage, mockumentary and satire. I didn't like the "A Clockwork Orange" inspired scene, though; it seemed misplaced within the rest of it.

An undeniably prescient mockumentary. It makes interesting insight into the relationships people have with cameras; how it becomes a tool of narcissism for those in front of it, and how filmmakers can be complicit in their subjects' dubious behavior. These are ideas more relevant now than ever, in the world of reality television's grotesque mega-popularity. Still, I couldn't help but feel it's a little one-note, wearing its blunt themes pretty thin over the course of a relatively short run time.

Disturbing for its main character's nonchalant attitude toward killing random people, and for its unpredictably shocking nature. Absurd, confronting, funny, ... It gives you a nice perspective on media and the ethics it uses while searching for sensation. Very interesting movie. An exercise to make the viewer question themselves as much as they question what they see on screen. It's like someone took Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and amped it up - filming and re-enacting the murder scenes in such a way as to make it hit you just that much harder. Excellent movie if you want to look close at your own self and have a shitty night afterward.

I think it may have been more effective if I hadn't already seen the same basic concept in Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006), but this one definitely gets credit for doing it earlier. The direction and editing of this isn't the smoothest, but that really just adds to the raw, gritty style and atmosphere. Some of it was definitely unnerving and it delivered some genuinely shocking moments. It's a good watch for those interested in alternative/independent film.

The main character really grows on you. Energetic, self-centered, intelligent, poetic, sadistic and sick works so well if played well, and it does work well fortunately. One of the better black comedies I've seen last couple of years. The whole documentary approach and the team's perspective is refreshing and skillfully used. And all the mistakes are therefore pristine and in the spirit of the movie.

It's the juxtaposition of scenes - vicious murder then body disposal then dinner then murder again - that makes for some of the best black comedy I've ever seen. I especially love how Benoit's personal history is really only hinted at. Does his love of architecture and poetry stem from a need for higher education? It's these unanswered questions that, more than the handy-cam or lack of music, give "Man Bites Dog" it's documentary feel. We aren't meant to understand Benoit.

while it's terrifying in all the right ways, with a pair of truly laugh-out-loud moments, it suffers from me seeing it after it inspired a generation of films to ape it, including the (imo superior) Behind the Mask. It's sort of like seeing Rocky for the first time years after seeing it parodied and recreated in everything else. It also has that insufferable film-student ending: Can't think of an ending? fade to black, hail of bullets, roll credits

Bold satire and pitch-perfect mockumentary on a film crew that follows a serial killer. Yes, there's black comedy to lighten the mood and the rather disorienting fact that the killer is charming and jovial. This film exposes the media's obsession with violence and whether that's a good thing. I'm not sure if these Belgian guys made another movie but they could rest on their laurels. Legendary performance by Poelvoorde. A film crew commits to follow a professional murderer and shoot his actions in real time, eventually they become accomplices, they are hit personally. It's an extreme situation that questions where the desire to create movies would go, what would be the limits, a producer that has no boundaries on the content and the way to finance the movie.

Something at the back of my mind is telling me I'm wrong about this movie, and I cannot figure out from where that voice is calling. It's darkly funny but not particularly clever. I suppose it's trying to say something about our fascination with violence, but if that's all it's got, then this is supremely overrated. The premise is kind of cool, I guess.
