Not just canny commentary on how this generation's experiences are inextricably mediated through the prism of pop culture; it captures an attendant myopia, too. Any coincidence the film parallels Scott's fundamental narcissism w/ the endless parade of exclusionary inside jokes? Or that Scott (and by extension the audience) finds it impossible to separate his culture-saturated inner world from the world at large? It's all exhilaratingly, uninhibitedly hyperreal: Baudrillard would have a field day

Fans of 8-bit gaming and J-pop culture won't be disappointed with this red hot melting pot of romance, martial arts and video game/anime aestetics. It's as playful and as beautifully shot with vibrant colors as any film this year. Though the characters are a bit two dimensional, it's highly enjoyable. It'd probably have been better off as a mini-series with more room for character development; but as it is, this is an enjoyable little action rom-com. Sort of: (500) Days of 'Kick-Ass'.

A great movie for a big nerd like me. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Funny, fast paced, enjoyable, great soundtrack, and an all around great time. Edgar Wright knows how to make a film. The self awareness is great, I wish more films were like this. You won't see anything else like this in the theater all year, go see it.

For the first two thirds, Pilgrim was delivering in abundance with amazing scenes, plenty of laughs and an all round good time at the cinemas. Once the final third had begun, the novelty and originality had also faded, not an off putting amount just some noticeable drag. While the steam runs out, still something you should definitely see. Also really liked Cera here too.

Wasn't expecting that much due to the nerd hype, but wow, this was genuinely good. Style is a bit overbearing at times and it's meant for a very specific audience (undoubtedly the reason for its financial failure), but if you're in that audience then it's a blast. Great visual effects, great humor, and some of the most vibrant colors and cinematography I've seen in a film recently make this a real treat. Check it out if you think it'll appeal to you.

How does one even rate such a film, not so much a stylish, entertaining throwback to classic beat'em up games as it is perfectly self-aware of its rather unfamiliar environment. Maybe not a love story for the books but Wright's kinetic, eye-popping direction turned it into something unlike anything you've seen before. A cult-classic in the making.

Cera actually pulls off the action star really well. It helps that in the film we are introduced to an alternate reality where situations like his are not that out of the norm. I simply loved this movie. My favorite thing about it though was that we were never "introduced" to the world, we were instead dropped in and expected to keep up. I find it refreshing to be treated like that, as if the director suddenly realized that his audience might actually have some brains. I really hope this does w

'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World' feels like I'm being told a story by my 5 year-old cousin. "This happens, and then this happens, and then this happens." The movie flies by without giving you an opportunity to give a crap. There are a few funny gags, most of the flick is just a bunch of 8-bit video game gags that wear out their cuteness early on. The problem is: there's not much to grasp onto after that. You end up not caring whether these cartoon hipsters burst in coins or just die on the spot.

A quirky geek/hipster geared action flick with enough genre elements to draw out pretty much anyone. The concept is intentionally absurd, but it plays out reasonably, if not cliched and contrived. The comedy is awesome and the style is somewhat refreshing, and I guess I'm always up for watching people heads explode into Canadian change. Also Cera isn't quite his intolerably annoying self.

Infinitely rewatchable. The little things (i.e. the things that make it an Edgar Wright film) like x's vs. hearts in the background, or the soundtrack placing the featured songs in minor parts before you hear them so they're already familiar, are what make this film the kind of special that doesn't come along often. When Chris Evans AND Brandon Routh deliver career defining performances, you've done something right.

A bit biased coming from a fangirl of the comics and for Edgar Wright, but I am smitten with this movie. Scott, whose inner-self is so pop-saturated he has a hard time separating fantasy from real, identifies with many youth today. With that in mind, Wright shot through the perspective of Scott; it is sheer turbocharged insanity. Yes, it bleeds pop culture references and is highly pop-arty so it won't appeal to some. But who doesn't like to imagine winning coins after facing a challenge?!

This was great! It’s become something a classic for me. I could throw it in just about any time and still laugh for a majority of its runtime. I do think the graphics novels are better, but this is pretty close. This was insufferable garbage. Michael Cera acts like a mentally retarded five year old throughout, somehow has hot girls fighting over him, and apparently has magical ninja powers. The comic book/video game aesthetic comes off as a weak attempt to give some flash to a sequence of boring, CGI infused fight scenes. Packed with awful jokes, worse dialog and non-humor, the only points this turd scores are for a couple of good tunes and Ellen Wong in a Catholic school girl outfit. Disappointing.

Wright's adeptness at blending all things pop culture into his films works very well here, as does his sense of style and editing rhythm. It definitely feels like it could be a triumph of style over substance, and I honestly found it hard to warm to the titular character, but I felt so otherwise well-disposed towards the film that I didn't care. Genuinely fun and likeable on a number of levels.

In line the cashier told 2 teens that without their high school ID they wouldn't get a student rate. The kids were African-American--one wore a vintage rapper t-shirt, the other a videogame character backpack. I offered to pay but they covered it & thanked me. After 2 hours of lame action, no laughs, and a sci-fi world where Michael Cera is more attractive than Chris Evans the show ended. One of the kids said to me, "That was fucking stupid. I'm glad you didn't pay for us." Put that on the box.

Everything about this movie was great: the pop-culture/video game references, the humor, even the action scenes were really fun. It oozes unique style and wicked-fast comic timing. A blended barrage of pop-culture references and video game special effects are used to tell the entertaining story of Pilgrim's battle to claim the heart of a new girlfriend. It's a snapshot of the contemporary teenage experience, complete with inspired music battles and character obsessions with self-defining idiosyncrasies. As such, it alienates viewers outside the target audience but will delight the Generation Y demographic of gamers/geeks.

Quite how Wright pulled this off I'm not sure? The many different elements that make up this film are so well judged. "Scott Pilgrim..." could so easy have come across as being a self-indulgent, niche movie. But Wright balances the visual style, simple (but effective) script, romance, humour and layers of paraody so well, it just seems to merge together perfectly. Wright is helped by the excellent Cera, finally showing a little variety in his roles, and some supurb cameos. Recommended.

I had a smile on my face from the first second to the last - a rare thing to happen for me. I was expecting an entertaining film and was absolutely blown away. Endlessly funny and original, the style and flair is amazing, the story is great and the acting was top notch. The pace was crazy, you don't get a second to catch your breath. The direction was brilliant, Edgar Wright has got to be one of the best of our times. A great thrill ride of romance, pop culture references and great action.

Define "generation": A group of people, generally male, with a shallow uniformity; they display a limited amount of personality. The norm is a generic, heterosexual, white male view of what coming of age is that sneers at any aberrant phenomenon (e.g. sexual fluidity, veganism) and can only understand the world through a filter of anti-intellectual pop culture. The male will attain self-respect through a series of fights along with conquering that elusive phenomenon known as "girls".

Although with no exposure to the source material, the sheer nerd hype around this movie created high expectations for this Edgar Wright adaptation, and they pretty much lived up to them all. Brilliantly paced the video game/pop culture/fantasy world surrounding these characters is delightful and exhilarating. The movie never becomes boring, but the unique fun reference packed style begins to lose something as the movie starts wrapping up. However, well worth all the hype or scorn respectively.

This movie is crazy. It has it's own high energy language of storytelling that is a little off-putting at first. But once you get used to it, it's just awesome and hysterical. The cast are all awesome with special points to Kieran Culkin and Ellen Wong. And Edgar Wright does an incredible balancing act of charm, coolness, romance, comedy, action and just sheer insanity. It's such a fun movie to watch and it's also way deeper and more meaningful than it has any right to be. Well done, sir.

Fantastic movie, soundtrack kicks ass, but I'm an old-school game geek so all of the cheesy references and the whole story arc really worked for me. The plot is really simple, and if you've seen the trailer you know it. You have your hero, you have seven bosses, and you have the princess trapped by the final boss. You probably die on him the first time, until you fight around and get strong enough to beat him. Classic RPG dynamics. I also absolutely LOVE Mary Elizabeth Winstead. God. So hot.

Awesome fun. Great soundtrack and great use of musicality. Fresh, original action sequences which did unfortunately get a bit repetitive over time, but they obviously had to include all seven exes so it's understandable. Taking a broader look at this though, it's amazing how clever they were with such a simple plot. Don't like it? Tell it to the cleaning lady on Monday.

Wright's incessant, frenetic attacks on the senses can become a bit much. Stylistically, it's superb. The really good gags, sadly, few - and far in between. Like in Hot Fuzz, the jokes are, mostly, cringingly unfunny and his characters are hard to invest in emotionally (disappointing, as he handled both those elements excellently in Shaun of the Dead). The ostensible hipness was terribly annoying at first but there's a lot of fun to be had with many of the performances. And the fights were cool.

The jokes and energy of the movie is really apparent and definitely keeps you through to the end. The fights as well were entertaining and very well choreographed. However, I found that as the movie progressed the novelty that it went with wears down a little and it starts to become gimmicky. Not to mention that the movie felt more rushed as it progressed and the Ex battles became less entertaining. Still worth a watch, though, especially for the people it appeals to.

Cute, funny, visually interesting and has a decent pacing. There isn't a lot of time to develop the cast, so everyone apart from Scott seems too one-dimensional, but it's the only way to fit the entire comic into 110 minutes. Right up my alley: self-indulgent and stylish to the extreme, dorky but clever enough to get away with it, ironic but not to the point of ennui. Expert effects, fight scenes and integration of arcade game visuals done with wit and humour, in a mix that felt cutting-edge, hip and in the moment, gave my eyeballs a jolly good seeing-to while refreshing me with new sights/sounds, rewiring my brain with new concepts of where cinema can go. Flaws: the fights ended too quickly (2-3 bigger fights = less suckage), the story was just too simple, and the characters (particularly Ramona) took a back seat to the action. But even if you don't get the many references to old video games and other such things, you'll still appreciate a movie that cheerfully embraces its insanity, an inventive and not altogether empty exercise in style. It's been quite a while since a film has left me this divided in my feelings about it. On the one hand it's so full of stupid self absorption and in your face "style" that I couldn't help being annoyed, but those things are also what make it so hilariously ridiculous. It layers upon layers of ironic seriousness and serious irony that I'm not sure even those involved know which parts are sincere and which joking. This movie is so much fun. There wasn't a moment when I wasn't loving it. A lot of people say that the fights get tedious. I don't see it, they're all so radically different. Sure, if they didn't change it up it'd be pretty bad, but for fights #4 and #5 he barely even participates. Listen, enough about the fights. That's boring. For me Scott Pilgrim wasn't enjoyable because of Scott Pilgrim. Highlights include his hilarious gay room mate, superbly played by Kieran Culkin, and Chris Evans as action star Lucas Lee. Too many of the jokes simply feel like "haha I played that video game too!" The movie simply felt far too ADD for me to actually enjoy without giving any breathing room. Basically a teen rom-com, but delivered in a style that's never been seen before. So many movies are CGI overload, it's great to see digital FX being used in innovative ways. The post-ironic humour works well without resorting to the pop-culture namedrops that plague many movies. Some say it panders to game 'nerds', but the videogame market dwarfs Hollywood by a mile. Perhaps this is the videogame market pandering to the nerd clique that still watches movies.

This is kind of weird for me. I've read most of the comics now and to be frank, I think they're pretty average comedy comics. I enjoyed it, but I've read better. So why does a film with almost all of the same lines work so well? Well, it's just cool. I mean the score is written by Nigel Godrich and features like 20 new Beck songs, for Christ's sake. For a movie made entirely of distractions, I was distracted by: 1) dialogue and situations that are frighteningly pretentious and overbearing. 2) A 'video game' style that is hardly inventive, never justified by the content, and a wasted opportunity. What could have been explored with genre and style is whitewashed by hyper-sameness. 3) Moral(s) are what destroyed this film's universality. Love does not conquer all (Ego and 'Self' does...?), and women are apparently meant to be owned.

A few flashes of sound-editing creativity here and there, but the rest of the time is an utter bore with some of the most irritating characters/actors to appear together in a single film. Basically every character is miscast. As for the plot, it makes no sense. And even if you are going to make a thin plot to simply serve as a vehicle for action scenes, this is not necessarily problematic IF the actions scenes are excellent (eg Sucker Punch). Unfortunately the action here is shaky-cam crap.

I'm not exactly fascinated with typical "nerd" culture, and I find Michael Cera to be one of the most annoying actors currently working. The movie actually ended up being really good. It was engaging, action packed, and most surprisingly, funny. It was almost a coming-of-age story, in a sense. It showed the maturation of an annoying young adult, into a slightly less annoying young adult with more responsibilities.

You have to play catch-up if you've never seen it before, but once you can understand the thought process of the film, it's something to just sit back and enjoy. Unique, very clever, and fun to watch, this movie is worth a ticket or three.

An exquisitely made ode to a generation.

This movie is a blast. Shame that no one went to go see it. A huge majority of my generation would get it, but they're too busy watching Jersey Shore I guess.

A very entertaining movie. The directing was something never quite seen before on such a scale, and it suits the comic main story perfectly. Acting was great, but what really made the movie was the fight scenes, editing and all those small but tasty details and effects. I highly recommend it for any Wright/comic/game fan.

This is an awful movie. Really, really awful. If you like Monkeycheesewhistle internet style humor maybe you'll like this, but you are an idiot.

This movie drained me. It "pushed" "teenager coolness" hard, in the format of a fighter video game, not a "serious" story (not that I mean to be pretentious, but I can't easily relate my perspective otherwise). The plot and characters are arbitrary and poor. However, some of the music and parts of the fights worked for me, which redeemed it somewhat. I'm still drained, though. If you love fighters, video game references, and/or fast pacing (albeit with poor transitions) then give it a watch.

Stylistically it's brilliant and you gotta love that, but it could be a lot funnier.

A visual treat, but the story and characters leave a lot to be desired.

This movie is entertainment guaranteed, well at least for the first 70 mins or so. Later the originality fades, but loved the cast and the motion comic look of the entire movie. You will love this if you are comic fan and video game fan.

Amazing effects! Extremely original, which is always a big plus! I think you'll get a lot of laughs out of this movie. On the downside the story is kind of lame and the 'new effects' started getting boring/on my nerves after seeing them scene after scene, in the same context (fighting exes)..

Visuals and comedy both at high levels, coming together in perfect harmony. Wright crafts a movie for a niche audience: a love story told through geek-related motifs. Wonderful.

Quite an unusual movie, but very enjoyable! I like the odd -original- style, however it may get a bit repetitive.

Completely surprising, fresh and fun, and also rather fearless in its specific details - it's so tied to a particular moment in cultural history I'm not sure it will make much sense in even 5 years, much less in 10. Still, it's good to know that personal, idiosyncratic and still crowd-pleasing movies with tons of self-conscious special effects can still gain popularity and not be dumb.

I wasn't sure what to expect coming in, but this movie was incredibly good. Funny, unique, just overall well-done. Obviously ridiculous, realism isn't the goal in a game basically set in a video game, but I loved it.

Director's orders to Cera: play that guy you do in all your other movies. Action!

Well THAT's very close to how one comic movie should look like. The story as in so many other works is not as important as the realization and in this case it's really cool.

Michael Cera shows off his versatility and proves that you just can't typecast him! In other, more realistic news, Kieran Culkin steals the show.
