Yikes. I'm a bit of a connoisseur of bad movies, but I'll be damned if this didn't go above and beyond the call of duty and absolutely bore me in a totally non-funny way to the brink of tears. No laughs. No joy. This movie absorbs hopes and dreams.

I feel that there are two essential films that every film enthusiast should see. The first would be Citizen Kane because it's generally considered the best film ever made. The second would be this Manos: The Hands of Fate because it is the absolute polar opposite of Citizen Kane in every way. This is cinematic cancer and it caused me to re-evaluate what "bad cinema" is. For that reason, and that reason alone, I'm glad I watched it. The MST3K of this makes it entertaining.

There is absolutely positively no way around the fact that this is shockingly hopeless even for the seasoned masochistic explorer of dreck with hall of shame potential, but I have to admit that I actually found it ever-so-slightly endearing. If I had an old sewing machine I might even have been tempted to pull it out and make myself a cool Master costume for Halloween.

Worst movie ever? Despite its reputation, probably not. However, it's still notably pretty horrendous from top-to-bottom. Every element of the "film" is just incredibly incompetent. Yet despite that, the odd terribleness of the movie, like the assaulting jazz score, the inept dubbing, or the atrocious editing, makes "Manos" not exactly so-bad-it's-good, but more so-bad-it's-fascinating. While still quite the tedious watch, it's something to experience for yourself firsthand, even if MST3K helps.

It goes far beyond the "its so bad its good" field, crosses the "turkey spot" and just moves further and further into the woods.. so far it just reaches some kind of outer limit and pure wilderness.. and when you look up at it, you can see god.

I don't know if this is the worst - I haven't seen nearly enough movies to give a definitve answer - but it's really, really, REALLY bad. One point for winning a bet (well done Harold) and one for Torgo. Otherwise, if you insist on watching the non-MST3K version of this, at least get some friends round and do it yourself.

Junk. Pure junk. Oh, you may think you've seen garbage before, but this is no "Plan 9 From Outer Space." Horrid acting. Laughable plot containing no laughs. Special effects that are so far from being convincing that you'd think they were done ironically, but oh no. It took me a couple weeks to slog through the MST3K version, but there is no reason to watch this movie. Ever. There is no novelty value to be found here.

Not a surprise I guess, but this really is pure garbage. It's not even the amusingly campy kind of bad, it's the tedious 70 minutes feels like three hours, bad emotionless acting dubbed over with no sense of how humans speak, narrative that has a normal structure but still makes no sense kind of bad. I watched the restoration and it actually looks decent, but that only makes the awfulness of everything else stand out more.

Like most I was introduced to this punishingly awful film through MST3K. It was one of their classic episodes and there is good reason. This movie is so queerly made in every aspect. Torgo with his odd knees is creepy unlike no other. Quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen.

I'm kind of trusting to others (imdb, criticker, mst3k, etc) that this film even deserves to be rated at all. But apparently it's not a home video and had a budget of 19,000 1966 dollars. At the credits the MST3K bots verbalized my thoughts, exclaiming, "It had a crew? I don't believe it had a crew!" There's nothing even specifically to complain about, because every single thing was bad. Everything. Wow.

The textbook on how NOT to make a film. There's not much to say that hasn't been said by everyone who's seen it via MST3k. Such a painful experience to behold. Hate to rate movies either 1 or 100 but this is the most pathetic excuses for a film of any kind ever. I can't find one positive about it. It's nowhere near the level of the "so bad it's good" group. I read somewhere that most of the people involved committed suicide within 7 or 8 yrs after completion of film. Everything about it is dreadful and less than amateurish. When you read these people who pop off with the "worst movie ever" at some forums, this is the only one they should be talking abo

Poor Torgo... his duties are basically to take care of the house, when some of the dumbest white people in the world show up, eventually causing his demise. By any standard, terrible--god-awful writing, abysmal "acting", and technically ... um... primitive. It's a bit like early John Waters, without the camp. Yet it's free of pretension, making it a better movie than, say, "What Dreams May Come" or "The English Patient". The only actor worth watching is John Reynolds (Torgo), and he's huge fun.

Featuring maybe the weirdest character in film history (Torgo) and another guy who's definitely in the running, wearing one of the silliest costumes ever (the two-handed cape). The only good thing I can say about this movie is that at least they did manage to kill a poodle. What I learned from this movie: sound travels farther at night. 10 points for Torgo's hilarious "death" scene in which two scantily clad women slap and jostle the poor caretaker for five whole minutes, and then push him off a cement altar...onto the soft desert sand, 2 feet below.

My first time watching it on its own terms, without MST3K. The restoration is gorgeous, offering for the first time ever actual definition. It reveals the film's strange, otherworldly sense of place. The black backgrounds and ominous score give the movie its surreal vibe. Paced surprisingly quicker than I remembered too. It's still got laughably bad moments, but it's a true gem from the sands of El Paso that deserves its place in film history.

It's an underlying paradox that most movies notorious as being "the worst ever made" are far from it - any movie that can inspire passion usually has something going for it (Reynolds' patently bizarre Torgo is enough to semi-redeem this one). This is inarguably a technically incompetent and derisive effort, with hacksaw editing, lifeless performances and hopeless ADR work the order of the day, but it also has a visceral spirit to it, especially in Neyman's flamboyantly costumed villain deluxe.

I could - and should - shit all over it for that constant ear-busting, flute-raping noodling of a soundtrack. But what I can't get over is how lame and half-baked and uneventful and moronic and boring the story is. I get it if you don't have the budget or the know-how. The question is, do you have a brain?

One of the more absurd concepts of this is from the movie itself with Torgo becoming the bell hop. If a stranger knocked on your door, demanded to let their family stay overnight and ordered you to bring in their luggage to a ready room what would you say? I'd say, "FUCK OFF!" Torgo just goes along with it! [MST3k: I was also surprised that there are still a few riffs I've haven't remembered. After watching this for over a decade year after year there's still some treats in store.]

This is not a good film. The pacing and acting are practically nonexistent. However, it's surprisingly endearing if you see it less as a film and more as a weird project where some non-filmmaker learned just how tricky filmmaking can be, while enlisiting the help of a local El Paso artist, featuring the artist's daughter and friendly dog and a whole lot of his frankly pretty groovy art as props.

California was rife with liberation, creeps, and loose money, so when this fertilizer salesman made a bet with a two-bit horror writer, here was the result. I dunno what sorts of mythology Warren digested for this, but I'm certain Tobe Hooper watched it on the big screen, and picked up a trope or two. Like many 60's-era MSTK episodes, Manos is a monument to shoestring marketing and a dire, singular vision. I wish there were more films like this around today (and no, Brown Bunny doesn't count).
