Criticker thought I'd give this a 40. Criticker does not know me well. This film is often taken seriously, and when taken seriously, it is often taken to be absolute tripe. When you look at this film as a spoof, an all out comedy, it is absolutely hilarious.

By sending up the campness of its own TV series and becoming a full-blown comedy, this movie is 10 times more entertaining than any of the modern gritty Batman films. Also, it's much easier to pace the movie and get your dialogue scenes out nice and clearly when you're not preoccupied with building up tension and atmosphere all the time. So "Batman: The Movie" is is super-easy to jump into and engage with.

There was a stark difference between television and film in the 1960s. That difference is on display here in what amounts to a 100 minute tv episode. And that contrast is not a good thing (this came out the same year as the Good, the Bad and the Ugly!). Really though, the problem is just that the humor almost never works. It is probably worth seeing just because it's iconic, but it is a chore.

If you are a fan of comic books and know anything of the history they have, you will either love this movie, or you are lying about being a fan. This movie represents exactly what comics used to be: a campy and fun adventure with humor and spinning transitions abound. In Batman, you get to see Adam West being who is he really is, because he IS Batman! Awesome!

It's just so aesthetically coherent - the colors, the outfits, the labels, the conviction and intentionality everyone brings even while being fully aware how absolutely ridiculous every single part of it is. And there's a weird strain of '60s optimism to it, all about how the hope of the world lies in cultures and nations communicating with each other, that's never made fun of even as it's used as the springboard for amazing social satire. Just lots and lots of fun all the way thru.

BATMAN is perhaps a more significant film than it gets credit for being; in its straight-faced, logic-free absurdity, we can see the germ of parodic genius that would ultimately result in AIRPLANE!, BLACK DYNAMITE, and the like. And in its best moments, it achieves true heights of what-the-fuck hilarity--consider the nobility of the almost-human porpoise. To be fair, it's overlong and repetitive (with sloppy editing), but it's performed with an infectious abandon, especially by the villains.

It's always so hard for me to rate campy films such as this. I would be lying if I said this film is not enjoyable, but I would also be lying if I said that it is a good film. It is one of those many films that is just bad enough to be good (at the risk of being hated by every self respecting Batman fan, I also must admit that the kitschy horrid-ness of Schumacher's Batman and Robin falls in the same category of bad-goodness.)

A rare instance of DELIBERATE camp that works. While not as great as the best of the show, it holds its own. Although Newmar's haughty slinkiness is missed, Meriwether fills out the curves of her fetishwear quite nicely. The rest of the tv cast continue 2 play everything straight& the dialogue is always funnier 4 it. The stand-out however remains a fantastic Gorshin, as a livewire unable 2 contain a maniacal glee not seen since Colin Clive's "It's alive! ALIVE!" bit in the original Frankenstein

I must have rented this movie every weekend as a kid; it's just indescribable how fun of a movie this is. I based almost all my childhood placing my action figures in like circumstances. Timeless, and that says alot for any film from the 60's. Most of the decade reeked of their fashions, Batman remained golden. Bat-tastic!

The opening credits promise pure escapism, unadulterated entertainment, the ridiculous, and the bizarre, and - HOLY KITSCH, BATMAN! - does it deliver. With the campiest sequence of superhero antics ever put on screen. But the important thing is that they own up to the camp, and don't still try to make a serious movie (I'm looking at you, Schumacher). This lies somewhere between the worst superhero film ever made, and the best comedy of all time.

Holy scriptlines Batman ! Ironically every good as bit as the later gothic Tim Burton Batman remakes. Comically camp as a row of tents and with a true collection of the original baddies this is one for those of a "certain age" who want a little 60's splendour.

Utterly ridiculous, but with its knowing sense of humour and sense of absurdity this turns out to be a great, unserious work that, in an era when this material is portrayed as deeply important, is almost subversive yet lovable. Particular highlights for me are the bizarre non-sequiturs that take place (including the 'porpoise' line) and Frank Gorshin's maniac and scene stealing role as The Riddler.

People taking this movie seriously are really missing the point. It's a comedy. I know there are people who take Batman very seriously, and I like a more serious approach as well. But you have to separate the characters. This Batman is not the same Batman that beats criminals to a pulp. This is just a fun movie and if you don't like it, well, maybe you need to lighten up a little bit and take it for what it's worth.

Feeling more like a bloated TV episode than a movie, this is fun for about 20 minutes before the overstated camp, and generally ugly visuals, become tedious and difficult to take - of the cast, Romero is the most fun and it's interesting to note how influential his performance would be on future Joker incarnations; no-one else makes much of an impression, with West particularly flat and dull - a far cry from his self-aware persona that blossomed in the 90s! Worth seeing, but not very enjoyable.

But it's also quite repetitious and feels like a television episode stretched to feature length, dragging the entire time. Still better than Batman v Superman though.

Saw this at a drive-in when it first came out. They brought in the Batmobile on a flat-bed trailer at the end of the movie. A Catwoman who wasn't Julie Newmar or Lee Meriwether handed out "autographed" pictures of Adam West and Burt Ward. It was the '60s, kids! Oh--if you don't like the TV series, stay away from this by all means. But if you like the show, you'll enjoy this mightily.

(Viewed on 22/05/14): West and Ward were good sports, and their fun take on Batman and Robin was a damn sight better than whatever dreck Schumacher came up with three decades later when he ran the brand into the ground. Perhaps inevitably the film does play like an extended episode of the TV show, and this style of comedy is best appreciated in small doses, but it's a lively romp that features strong turns by Romero, Meredith and Gorshi as the 'coolest' camp villains ever.

youll probably find nothing but mixed reviews for this movie. it pissed me off more than anything, it felt like everyone involved hates batman and makes a complete mockery of his legend. The humor in this movie completly retarded. The jokes are extremly lame. On the plus side everything is very colorfull and has a great look to it, all the characters are awesome, and he fights an exploding shark. The main drag to this movie is the dialog, it was absolulty horrible and i hate the movie for it.

My favorite Batman movie, full-stop. Everyone seems like they're having fun and not taking it seriously at all, which is part of the magic of this movie. The plot isn't half-bad either, if you actually pay attention, although I can hardly fault you for not doing so.
