Good characterizations and a standout performance by Bates. I also liked some of the editing choices. But as more and more story secrets were revealed, I found myself less and less interested. By the end it all seemed obvious and routine, with the last ten minutes playing out like a makeshift and cliched courtroom drama.

Kathy Bates may have won the oscar for "Misery," but her performance in this film is easily her best work. The rest of the oscar caliber cast is equally good, which by itself makes this one of the best films of the 90s.

Very suspenseful. I would have liked it infinitely better without the cranky, fucked-up-adult daughter stealing all the otherwise good scenes. Bates was brilliant!

Bates is an unlikely leading actress that doesn't have the stunning looks to propel her forward like so many of her colleagues so i always feel her stardom is really based on her merit and it shows, again. She's such a joy to watch, even if Kings quirky-idiom-foulmouthing feels a bit geriatric at times. Movie could have been 45m shorter as there's some sand in the gears in the end when police and courtroom tropes are sought to reach closure to an otherwise very good story, one of Kings best

Very solid flick that holds up over a decade later. Cathy Bates is fantastic, and the realization that the father is a child molester is a scene that keeps sticking with me.

This movie was very good. I did not expect Kathy Bates to be better than she was in Misery, but she was. Judy Parfitt was very good, and so was Christopher Plummer, as a detective who harbors revenge. A very good drama, and probably one of the better Steven King adaptations.

full rvw at Letterboxd. It's a tale that could have been told, easily, in ninety minutes. But it's one of a select few films I've seen recently that I felt really made use of its extended screen time, effectively escalating our interest in proceedings and delivering crucial character detail. Engaging, through and through.

Realistic and solid. An un-King story, but solid in every aspect. Too bad I felt it lacked something more, something to make it special.

Faithful adaptation to the Stephen King novel. Seeing as how it was one of SK's weakest novels to date, it was a tough movie to make great. It works, it was well acted, but the writing is, well, a bit stiff.

Bates is an extraordinary actress, even if her dialect in this is hard on the ears, and Plummer is top-drawer as always. In terms of structure, it's great; the jumps in time are beautifully done. A fairly good plot, too, but the melodrama parts are pitched a bit high for my taste at times.

Outstanding adaptation of Mr. King's novel. The daughter, who hardly even speaks much in the novel, is made a major character here, which solves a lot of the problems of getting the points and the richness of the story across. Bates, Leigh, and Plummer are all great

Despite Christopher Plummer, who is horribly miscast, as the detective, and some overblown speechifying, Kathy Bates delivers yet again as another murderous King leading lady.

Effective melodrama with feminist overtones: all the women are abused or misunderstood, all the men are abusers; what saves it from too much oversimplification is the revelation of the reasons for the edgy relationship between mother and daughter.

Given the talent of the cast (Bates in particular) and Gabriel Beristain's cinematography director Taylor Hackford could have made something more than JUST a good crime drama.

I enjoyed 'Misery', but I wasn't as much of a fan as it's reputation had me expecting. Kathy Bates performance as Dolores has convinced me I need to revisit because she's fantastic. As far as the novel, I always thought it somewhat underappreciated amongst King's ouevre - impressive for it's sprawling, immersive monologue of a narrative but overlooked for it's slow pace. The best parts of the novel (style and form) don't really translate to the screen, but it's still a damn solid adaptation.

Dolores Claiborne deals with very difficult themes with admirable grace. It is a performance piece at its core. All together anchored by Kathy Bates second turn in a Stephen King story.
