(after repeat viewings) Undoubtedly Chaplin's most personal endeavour. Grief and laughter complement each other throughout, evoked effortlessly by Jackie Coogan's heartwarming performance, which was so real and moving, and the one by Chaplin himself, a man whose own life had been shaped by the experience of parental abandonment. "A picture with a smile and perhaps a tear", damn straight.

Heartwarming, sweet and simple, charming Chaplin feature, but what's new? How bout, wtf was up with the little bully's big brother's bubbly body? It's like he took inflatable steroids, but they only worked from the nipples up.

The main reason why most young children in movies are so jarring is that their vocal delivery isn't good enough. Their physical acting is usually fine, it's just that they can't open their mouths without breaking the illusion. The good news is, children in silent movies can hold their own against and even surpass their adult co-stars, and that's exactly what Jackie Coogan does in The Kid. The film isn't quite as good as Chaplin's later work, but it's a nice mix of melodrama and comedy.

The young girl is holding her belly. The Tramp does his schtick walk into the frame , wiggles his cane , duck walks in semi circles around the girl. Intertitle: "You're getting an abortion".

Not Chaplin's most consistent story, he'd go on to even better movies, but the way he mixes nimble slapstick with actually effective melodrama and social commentary (seriously, it's a 1921 movie about out-of-wedlock pregnancy that refuses to blame the woman for it) is brilliant. And of course, Jackie Coogan puts in a fantastic performance.

Not the best comedy but it's a wonderful heartwarming film. Besides the usual Chaplin comedy, which is actually pretty subdued, what makes this film stand out is how good the little kid is.

I don't think it's Chaplin's strongest in terms of comedy, story, or romance. But their are few things sweeter in film than watching Chaplin and Jackie Coogan's scenes together. The scene where they try to take him to an orphanage is overwhelmingly emotional.

Without doubt a master work of cinema. This film has everything all packed into about 50 minutes and it never feels rushed or disingenuous. As good as Chaplin is (and that is very good in this case) he is upstaged by Coogan - the Kid pelting rocks at windows and then bolting is perfect cinematic comedy. The relationship between the Tramp and the Kid is a (moving) picture of love. Hilarious, funny and poignant. Chaplin gets everything right on this occasion.

The Kid does a great job of producing a cute memorable story. The moments of comedy only add to the cute father son relationship between The Tramp and The Kid and the moments of drama are heightened by the foundation set up earlier in the movie. The little kid did a wonderful job in this movie. As a self-avowed kid actor hater, I really thought this kid did a good job. It didn't hurt that this was a silent movie. This movie really shows how silent can still be a good stylistic choice.

Chaplin would go on to direct bigger and better and films, but The Kid, his feature length debut, has an emotional directness that is sincere and difficult to fault. A simple dramedy about a man who raises an abandoned child, only to have him taken away from him when he falls ill, The Kid has no real ambition other than emotionally moving viewers and making them laugh. Coogan is memorable as the kid and there are some great set pieces; and Chaplin's score is genuinely poignant.

Chaplin clearly poured a lot of care into what turns out to be one of his most deeply idiosyncratic pictures. The peculiar blend of physical comedy, emotional sentimentality, and fantastic elements isn't always seamless, but it's often affecting.

So sweet. There's something about Chaplin's charm that lets him tug at my heartstrings all he wants without rubbing me the wrong way. He makes a film here that is both really funny and heartwrenching (it helps that the kid is so darn irresistible and emotive). This is also my favorite role for Chaplin, since he has a feminine sweetness that is perfect as the "mother" to the kid.

This is an exquisite film up to about the time the kid gets taken by the orphanage. After that, still very good. It's a great introduction to more mature Chaplin though, blending comedy and drama so well. Several shots scattered throughout the first two-thirds of the film are heartbreaking and poignant, a testament to Chaplin's eye for poetic composition. This poetry is never more evident than when Purviance sits on the step, baby in hand, in front of her son. The entire sequence shines.

A very touching film. It's much less concerned with slapstick comedy (though there's still plenty of that) and has a real emotional heart to it. The little boy playing the kid was cute, charming and could sell emotion well. Chaplin was his usual brilliant self, of course. An easily enjoyable film.

A simplistic, sentimental tale elevated by the charisma of Chaplin and the titular kid. Some chuckle-worthy gags and some truly affecting scenes (the iconic rooftop chase probably stands out) are enough to make the film compelling, although this is probably too melodramatic for my tastes.

Sweet and sentimental Chaplin effort is notable for a great child performance from Coogan, as well as a touching, well developed one from Purviance (far from Chaplin's usual damsel in distress); the sincerity that Chaplin infuses into the familial story gets this sometimes uneven effort over some pot holes and digressions (the "dream" denouement feels suspiciously like padding). A good time as always with Chaplin, but this may have benefited from less of the Tramp and more of the "A" story.

Imagine that this movie is over 100 years old today! Crazy to think of just how comedy can be timeless like this, still making me laugh and also feel sympathy towards The Tramp. A pretty upsetting film for a Charlie Chaplin production. But I like my humour upsetting, and some of the scenes in this movie are pretty laugh-out-loud funny (if you have a sick sense of humour like I do), like when the kid hits the crying bully in the face, ha-ha! This is also quite a touching film, most of this coming from the kid actor who is extremely good.

A wonderfully bittersweet affair filled with clever visual humour and heartbreaking sequences and successful in evoking both laughter and sadness. Coogan is fantastic as is Chaplin. It’s the prologue to what was yet to come from Chaplin and a sincere expression of his own childhood as well as adulthood predicaments, one that looks at life with comforting defiance as the two heroes fight against adverse circumstances and eventually manage to exceed them in order to rescue their dying haven.

Suitably amusing and charming, this is a lovely Chaplin film. Just think, any kid/person born around when this came out would be in their 100's now, there probably aren't many alive. Lovely thought(!) anyway... the interactions between said kid and Chaplin are enjoyable, I enjoyed the scenes featuring the young kid scarpering away, I assume these were sped up somehow(?) and the music is light and jaunty. A very enjoyable watch, I'd recommend this, yes.

(52-minute 1972 Cut) Well, guess I'm now officially someone who likes 100-year old movies. Not Chaplin's best, but irresistibly charming nonetheless. Coogan is both impossibly cute and a fantastic actor, the scene where he's being taken away to the orphanage is heart-wrenching. The fact the movie is really funny too, certainly doesn't hurt either. Going from Buster's two-reelers to this is brutal tonal whiplash; even though I tried not to make too many direct comparisons, the pathos and melodrama was often overwhelming. And the less said about the last reel, with its padding of a dream sequence and howler of an ending, the better. That said, the production value is gorgeous, it's well-paced with minimal intertitles, and it's very funny when it wants to be. But he definitely got better at this as he went along.

Not bad but certainly not at the level Chaplin would reach later on. It's a touching, nice movie about a forced bond that becomes something real and tender. It's weird to picture Coogan growing up to be Uncle Fester. Chaplin shows his skill in an early full-length, but it just feels...lackluster (?) in comparison. Charlie Chaplin's endearing and at times heartbreaking movie about a Tramp (Charlie Chaplin) who raises an abandoned child (Jackie Coogan) is great from start to finish. Chaplin finds emotional depth in the facial expression of both him and Jackie Coogan without needing to dwell on what characters are saying to each other. He also manages to keep many great gags in the film without disrupting the flow of the film. He also executed a superb dream sequence near the end which surprised me.

There are only a few things that don't sit so well with me, like the fairly long dream sequence near the end and the too-easy ending wrapping everything up. If there's reason to revere Chaplin nearly a century later - beyond his deftness with timeless comedy and romance - it's for how often his films function as reminders, without ever proselytizing, of the essential resourcefulness, humanity, and dignity of the destitute and downtrodden.

A lot of the fun in watching THE KID is just seeing Chaplin iron out some of the lumps in his aesthetic. We see how he would later reign in some of his worst tendencies and scrubbed away some of his more interesting ones. A dream sequence late in the film may go down as a career low-point in terms of sheer self-indulgence and treacle; but the verisimilitude of the slum setting and his cheerful envisioning of The Kid and The Tramp as unrepentant con men is an interesting variant in his oeuvre.

Doesn't pack the emotional punch that City Lights has and doesn't have a scene that is funnier than the boat scene in Modern Times.
