I have to admit, I'd expected a LOT worse. It's actually not half bad. The Don Giovanni story is awesome. Guy lies, steals and whores his way through Europe. What could possibly be wrong with this? I'll tell you what's wrong. Opera! Without the "live feeling" of the theater the songs and music quickly become white noise filled with ridiculous dialogue and idiotic plots. Far from the most humble debut feature 'Juan' is certainly one of the most memorable. Holten has the same guts as Luhrmann with 'Romeo + Juliet' and bravery pays off yet again. Flawless? No. But 'Juan' is nevertheless truly original, daring and burning with passion. Not to mention the magical Mozart music that's as mesmerizing as any ever written.
