The unicorn was a bit wooden/alien at times but I guess that's the point. The romance didn't seem too developed. Nice artwork. Christopher Lee had a good presence. Fav scene: Molly lamenting that she didn't encounter unicorns in her youth. I just love that there aren't any child characters here (except maybe Unicorn).

Perhaps nostalgia influences my opinion, as it does for many of my childhood favorites, but this is a magical film. It deals with love, loss, friendship, and the line between the world of fantasy and reality with surprising maturity. The movie still manages to delight, occasionally scare, and move me to this day. I also dig the soundtrack.

It can dip into cheesiness at points, but also has an elemental, classic and appealing charm to it. The visuals have a lush, painterly quality to them.

Probably not much fun to watch solo, being a totally manly man and all, but quite entertaining to watch wasted together with cute company that has strong nostalgic ties to it. Also features Jeff Bridges who wants to bang a horse. Ah, the 80's.

The animation is not the most impressive, even if some designs were perhaps made to be stylized in a way I am not fond of (the humans are ugly). The story and the lore have fascinating gravity to them however, like some mysterious fairy tale with serious consequences to failing the story's quest. Interesting characters too, though the voice acting is not always on point, and the songs sometimes out of place. It could still please a kid, especially if they like unicorns.

Another one of those movies from my childhood that scared and scarred me, in a good way, I guess. Also, any time you get to see tree boobs. and harpie boobs? Holy shit.

Pure unheimlich, existing just on the cusp of normalcy. The pacing is bizzare, racing forward with reckless abandon. It's never clear how much time passes or what physical distance is traversed. Characters constantly seem to have an almost meta-fictional understanding of their world but then blunder about like fools. Honestly it reminds me of Kim J. Ok's 'The Legend of the Titanic' (and that's a compliment).

Its pacing is, essentially, make it up as you go along, leading to both playful inversion of certain fantasy tropes and, importantly, really stupid decisions. Lines and ideas stick out but so do painfully long non sequiters and a cringy loss of agency from the central immortal female. I want to make a joke about America’s The Horse With no Name but, man, this soundtrack was enough.

I loved this movie as a child, but nobody should buy it until they've resolved the legal dispute between the film company, and the author Peter Beagle.

Looks beautiful and has some talented voice actors. I was especially impressed by Mia Farrow and Christopher Lee (of course). It is just a bit too disjointed for me and some of the characters are quite annoying, I guess in a true 80's cartoon fashion. It's a classic, but it's cute and charming at most and not very memorable for me. Might have felt differently about it if I had seen it as a kid and there'd be that sweet sense of nostalgia, but I never did.

Perhaps it is just my lack of nostalgia for this movie that has me rank this so low, but The Last Unicorn is just not impressive. Though it is charming and its voice acting is pretty great, the animation is not impressive when you consider Nausicaa came out only 2 years after this. It's a bit cliched and its animation isn't all too impressive, but it still has pluses that save it from being considered a bad movie.

I first watched this at the cinema, when I was six or so, and can remember liking it but also being slightly disturbed by it. I watched it for the second time last night, this time with my own kids; they loved it, and I (thankfully) suffered no ill effects...

The art was nice but there was just way too much singing for me, and I didn't like how Mia Farrow voiced the unicorn. Or maybe I just feel like it's too dated? I remember watching it as a child and being very sad afterward. The story truly is heartbreaking. But I was in tears after reading the book, not so after watching the movie.

Works: Mia Farrow, expressive character designs, mostly looks decent. Doesn't: general hippie 60's vibe, strained comic relief, show tunes singing butterfly, overbearing soundtrack, songs do nothing for me, story meanders.

First half is a bit corny and overall does not veer from a straightforward story arc much, but the second half ramped things up a bit. Features some intriguing inflections within the writing that create a freshness, and there's almost this half-baked meta element in there: characters discussing their roles in the epic story as a duty, an ethos, and something to be claimed rather than a simple embodiment of particular virtues. Definitely worth seeing, very pretty.

I have no nostalgia for this movie and no particular love for Rankin & Bass' animation style. Christopher Lee is a delight and clearly having a blast as the villain, but the rest of the proceedings are markedly uninspired. The songs range between unmemorable and cringeworthy, and a lot of the voice acting is just bad (especially Jeff Bridges, who sounds like he's half asleep). I know a lot of people love this one, but it's not one I can recommend.

The Last Unicorn is a notable improvement on Rankin & Bass' attempt on The Hobbit. While the animation is middling, the story is straightforward in an endearingly old-fashioned way and for the most part entertaining. The film does a good job establishing the characters, the quest and the stakes, but falters with the romantic element. The voice acting is a mixed bag, as are the songs which vary from great to questionable. The themes are interesting and the film doesn't overstay its welcome.

Amazing artwork weaved together with an amazing story, grounded in a basis of not wanting to be alone, nor be the last of your kind. It's a tale of fitting in, acceptance, and learning to have confidence in yourself. I loved this movie.

No where near as good as the book it's based on, but not bad for what it is. It's a haunting little story that's not, entirely, meant for children. The voices are well done -- but the animation's less than stellar, however, especially by today's standards.

I wanted to like this movie so bad. I love unicorns. But the screenplay was HORRIBLE. Nothing really made sense or connected well at all. I did like the unicorn herself. But her magic and grace alone could not save this film. Ugh. So disappointed.

There are a lot of interesting things about this movie. For example, a cast featuring people like Jeff Bridges and Christopher Lee. Or the fact that this animation studio would go on to form Studio Ghibli. Or the fact that... Jeff Bridges sings a love song in the movie... Yeah... Some of the movie is definitely corny. The music consists of fantasy lutes & flutes and 80s soft rock. But it's good that they took the subject matter seriously. It's not an overwhelmingly kiddie movie.

Now this film is a Classic, no doubt-- but it wears its flaws as loudly as they day they premiered. The beginning is slow, and the end is marred by not just a self-censorship of -- what one could think was violence but actually was proper depiction of a solid metaphor-- but the middle is perfect, abundant of ideas, has stirring scenes, unforgettable moments of dialogue and some of the most passionate artistry in the animations and backgrounds ever put to film. The progenitor of a entire type.

Not particularly well-acted, but beautifully animated. My scoring may be influenced by absolutely adoring this movie as a kid who really, really, really, really, really wanted a unicorn. Bonus points to the story for the ending, which is NOT the dull/lazy "happily ever after" one expects to see from children's media of the time.

A very sentimental animated high-fantasy children's movie, a tear-jerker almost. Features Schmendrick the Magician, the only Jewish stereotype I've seen in a fantasy movie prior to Billy Crystal in The Princess Bride. He is voiced by the befitting Alan Arkin.

While I kind of like it now, but hated it as a kid, found it slow and boring save for a view few profound scenes that stuck with me enough to re-watch it as an adult. Looking at it today it suffers from being too understated in parts, something that aged horribly and can make the characters seem bland or cold, and has a few "for kids" moments, but it's like watching a moving tapestry and something animation and fantasy fans can enjoy.

Rankin and Bass's 70s and 80s output was fantastic, and The Last Unicorn is no exception. The blend of anime-like illustration with an absolutely phenomenal cast triumphs over a decent script. Mia Farrow was the perfect choice for a unicorn.
