VERY dated (the Morlocks in particular may inspire howls of laughter) but undeniably charming and ultimately enjoyable in a cheesy, classic sci-fi sort of way.

A quite enjoyable adaptation of the time machine. It doesn't actually push the bar anywhere as far as film making goes, but it's a good watch and manages to have plenty of lasting power even fifty years later. The effects are state of the art for 60's, which means laughable for todays standard, but it's easily overlooked.

Probably my favorite movie of the past. Saw it a lot as a kid. The Morlocs scared me to death. The Eloi were beautiful. A great story, but I would expect nothing less of H.G.Wells. I think Weena was my first crush, ha!

Top badass moment? This is a film I loved as a young lad. Sadly it's aged about as well 2 Unlimited's back catalogue. Brave hero George travels 800,000 years into the future, to a hippy commune next to a man-cave of fat, grumpy blue blokes, who don’t appear to have access to any dentists, opticians, hairdressers or menswear outlets. George can’t seem to keep his hands off his Weena either, (snigger). Seriously, that relationship is going to go nowhere. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

A movie I've loved for a long time. I really don't care to ever see the remake, this was the perfect adaptation of the book. Wonderful, colorful and imaginative.

Not as good as the "remake". The idiot eloi are seen too much as heroes. In the book, they weren't worth saving (as should have been in the movie)

Actually pretty damn close to the novella, with added commentary on nuclear warfare. Could have used the crazy crabs from the end of the book though. Enormous crabs make everything better.

Apparently women 800,000 years from now will still speak English and worry about whether to wear their hair up or down. And the plot holes are painful (such as who fills the fruit bowls and does the dishes of the Eloi who obviously never lift a finger?) The movie plods at times, but I suppose must be taken in the context of 1960 when it was made. Sci-Fi was still in its infancy on the big screen and sexism was still rampant. But even that considered, this film shows its age somewhat badly.

The underground Morlocks are the largest letdown, as scary as kewpie dolls. On the other hand, the passive, blond Eloi, aboveground, are excellently represented by Mimieux, who handles her lines as delicately as if they were flowers. Her portrayal of the limp and fragile Weena must have led directly to her ideal casting, later, in _Light in the Piazza_, as a lovely young thing with a mental age of ten.

This is obviously dated but I don't think to the point where it can't be enjoyed as straight sci-fi. The Morlocks, that used to terrify me as a child, have not held up so well.

Is it the nostalgia talking? Or was this really an excellent movie? All I can say for sure is that it's miles better than the remake.

What I found very interesting to see is what deserved you an oscar for best special effects in the year 1960. A visual effects-specialist in those days was actually a builder of very small 'scale-models'. A lava-erruption meant pourring tomato-sauce over that scale model. But actually, placed in his own time, an alright movie. Ofcourse now you will laugh with the fighting scene's and filming locations, but worth the while.

Much better than the CGI-fest remake starring Guy Pearce. The Time Machine has great effects for its time and isn't overly flashy.

Once it's done wasting a good ten minutes needlessly explaining the concept of time travel to some very slow learners, it really kicks off. The classic story is told with clarity and enthusiasm (though the voiceover is largely superfluous). Most of the effects and production design are campy but the time machine itself must be one of the greatest movie props of all time. Taylor is a perfect lantern-jawed hero and Alan Young (the voice of Scrooge McDuck) deserves a mention too.

The first two acts here are excellent, as Taylor's optimistic Wells shifts time travel from theory to practice. His charisma and some old-school stop motion time lapses pace this adventure that is fleshed out by intriguing historical social commentary. It is the final act that falters a bit, as Wells' ambition turns into a hero complex consummated by an eye-rolling romance. Cringe-worthy special effects and cinematography top off this mediocre final act of an otherwise engaging sci-fi adventure.

Occupies the same space as Star Trek: TOS, where the ideas outpace what effects could do at the time. That said, it is good science-fiction for the era and is worthy of having two remakes, even if neither are any good.

This version of H.G. Wells' The Time Machine holds up rather well after many years. While it started off pretty slow, the action ramped up over the course of the movie. The Morlocks, which I'm sure where terrifying at the time, didn't really hold up in anything but schlockiness. The iconic time machine and other effects hold up pretty well for a movie made 60 years ago. I like how the movie was paced with the main character moving throughout time. The idealism doesn't hold up in our cynical time

I'm a Wells fan and, admittedly, this is fairly true to the source material, only with a bit more added (namely the friendship between George and Filby). Still, it's the aesthetic & tone that's all wrong & some of the science fiction and a lot of the social commentary is stripped away (the Eloi certainly shouldn't be vulnerable attractive blondes). There's genuinely good moments and some nice worldbuilding, though slightly spoiled by campy 60s vibes, too much overdub narration and exposition.

The time machine is a very fun film that doesn't try to be any more than it is. It kind of gave me Planet of the Apes vibes, maybe due to Taylor's chewing of the scenery or the depiction of the future. A lot of it is pretty dumb, of course, but it's a charming time and Pal does a good job with a relatively modest budget. It hasn't aged particularly well, but it's still fun.
