I can't help but think this was Prince's honest attempt to reveal to the world how psychologically fucked and abusive he was, yet you also get the impression he thinks these flaws are absolved because he's a musical wunderkind. I don't care if your stage presence is so electrifying that my toes curl and my knees become crushed apples, hitting people makes you a scumbag. Those accusing this movie of misogyny have valid grievances.

Prince is one of the greatest musicians of all time. This more than overshadows his sub par acting ability. This story tells the heartwrenching saga of a prodigy's life.

Probably the greatest concert film I've seen that's absolutely uproarious especially when intoxicated. Morris Day and his manservant Jerome are particular standouts in the cast.

This movie really captures the trials a tribunes that Prince and his band had to go through. Although, there are some scenes in the movie which seemed awkward to shoot, and a little unnecessary; such as the scenes when Prince's lady friend jumps into the lake and is then left by Prince. However, teenage girls are likely to fall in love with Prince's humor in the movie, and his undoubtful talent that he possesses. I could never get tired of the movie, and his legacy will live on.

The plot of this movie is so misogynistic, but the music by Prince, Morris Day and the Time, Apolloinia 6 and Dez Dickerson is completely worth it.

Tell me you're not rooting for Morris Day the whole time. Concert parts would get 75-80, the Prince quasi-biopic framing paints him as hilariously narcissistic which from all accounts he was.

PURPLE RAIN is a legendary concert film masquerading as an earnest underdog-conquers-showbiz tale. And while the narrative portions of the film are certainly uneven and shakily acted, they do provide heartfelt insights into the struggles of a young, conflicted artist. By the time that the rapturous title track enters the story--followed by a two-song encore--it's clear that this movie is primarily a vehicle to convey the texture and emotions of one of the greatest albums of all time.

The soundtrack is what you are here for. Prince was a weird little man who didn't understand rules and people and most other things the world deals with on a day to day.

Under Quarantine Film Reviews #17: As a film, it's not that great. The scenes Morris & Jerome make up for Prince's subpar acting and ego-stroking. But it covers up its flaws with absolutely electrifying performances and also by providing us the greatest soundtrack of all time.

I never understood the hype or fascination with Prince. He had a few good songs, but they made him out to be one part James Brown, one part Sly Stone and one part Marvin Gaye. He fails on all three levels. The movie itself is pretty mindless, with scads of bad acting to go around for everyone. Aside from a couple of good songs, it's forgettable.

A muddled, convoluted screenplay does at least appear to be a heart-felt and sincere psychological work-out by Prince, though this can't disguise how generally ugly and unpleasant the seedy cast of characters are (especially the men). Compensation (and it is a hell of a compensation) is the wonderful soundtrack, with plenty of lustrous and exciting concert scenes (if perhaps a few too many). Also serves as a valuable time capsule of the 80s.

Some of those heckles were really uncalled for. "Avast ye matey?" What the hell does that mean? "20 degrees off the starboard side! It's a Spanish galleon!" There's no comeback for that!

'Purple Rain' is one of the greatest albums of all time, so it's a shame the film doesn't live up to the music's avant-pop energy. Never mind that you're supposed to believe that audiences are hating 'Darling Nikki.' The biggest problem is the direction is flat. For the beautiful use of lighting, committing to the red/blue/purple color spectrum, the camerawork is flat and static. There's a lot more you can do to film a performance than frame Prince in close-up for a minute straight.

(...) The Kid selbst schlägt Appolonia mehrere Mal, so dass ich zusammenfasse: All das wirkte bereits 1984 seltsam anachronistisch - und heute kommt es nur noch schlimmer! Als Liebesfilm ist Purple Rain ein Rohrkrepierer.(...)

Carried through by how seriously it takes the Kid's inner demons. Yes, Prince plays (rather amateurishly) a chauvinist dick from a broken home, but notice how these traits intensify the resonance of the live performances. You can see it in the genuine hurt of Apollonia's or the father's face. Yet by the end, there's redemption, even for Morris Day.

The musical performances in the film and its accompanying soundtrack make this movie worth watching. I'd be hard pressed to find a better soundtrack. Other than that, there's not a whole lot going on here. Albert Magnoli has moments where his direction looks good, but ends up falling short because of how flat the actors deliver their lines. Prince (The Kid) and Morris Day (Morris) are the standouts in this film, but even then they are still best when on stage.

Though charming at points (and great musically), this hasn't aged well, especially in its gender politics. The performances aren't stellar either and the poor editing hurts.

Razor thin plot. Coasts by on Prince's charisma. The fact that half the film is Prince songs/performances makes up for everything else.

Purple Rain definitely has its moments and it is essential viewing for any Prince fan, as the Purple One's musical talent is on full display during several extended performance scenes. However, as a film, the plot is pretty thin, the acting stilted (although I do think Morris Day is pretty underrated here as Prince's main musical rival), and the film often drops into weird dreamy montages of extended single shots. But, perhaps this is how Prince's mind works, and it's worthy viewing once.

Try to view as an extra-long music video instead of as a movie. The script is awful. 80s awful. But there were some brilliant moments in the movie. The lighting and cinematography in the indoor scenes were amazing. The music is obviously world class. You are going to love it if you're a Prince fan.

Prince trying to be intimidating while wearing his high heels and puffy shirt. At the end when Prince is performing Purple Rain they keep cutting to a guy wearing sunglasses and a hat in the audience, his reactions are the best, he represents all of us hearing Purple Rain for the first time. Prince is kind of a dick.
