And here I thought that I came so well prepared. I already knew it was 'Rocky' with Robots and a bit of 'Over the Top' crammed in there. I knew it would stray from robot mayhem into amateur writing hour, and Jackman, Lilly and some piss annoying kid would stutter through the toebreakingly bad dramatic scenes. But I didn't see the breakdancing robot coming. I DIDN'T SEE IT COMING!! OH MY FUCKING GOD, HOW CAN I NOT HAVE SEEN THAT COMING?!?!

Every boxing movie cliché in the book put together to make a movie well suited for kids whose childhood was spent on pokémon and daytime anime and their early teens in front of their Xbox 360. So if you watched Akira and played Mike Tysons Punch Out during your childhood, I guess you better stay clear of this. If your kids nag you to take them to see this: Bring along a smartphone of some sorts and watch 'Over the Top' on it. I don't know how to get you through the last 34 minutes, though. Sorry

I actually liked the look and feel of the movie. That being said the kid was incredibly annoying and Jackman's character is so cartoonishly stupid and irresponsible at the beginning he's almost unredeemable.

As a kid, I loved the game One Must Fall 2097. There's a simple reason why that robot-fighting game is immensely more enjoyable than Real Steel. In a movie that should be focusing on fun robot dickkicking action, I don't want to see every underdog sports movie cliche ever plus all the focus on father-son bonding featuring the most punchable rage-inducing brat ever put to film. Get your priorities straight, douchebags!

Soulless and grotesquely inept storytelling destroys what could have been a decent enough kid's movie. A kid's movie filled with hard violence, break dancing robots, skanky women and the biggest douche-bag father figure protagonist since Schwarzenegger in Jingle All The Way.

Director Shawn Levy blends 'Rocky,' 'Over the Top,' 'Transformers,' and a giant bottle of syrup to deliver a science-fiction fantasy that relies entirely on formula and familiar beats. I don't care. The special effects are spectacular and believable. The father-son relationship carries us through the film because talented actors never tap out despite run-of-the-mill material. 12-year-olds will love this movie right down to the last bolt and I bet their fathers will too.

If this movie was simply about a jackass version of Hugh Jackman using robots to box and then having his heart softened, this movie would have been awesome. However, they screwed it up with a freaking kid and a father/son sob story.

From the teasers you would have thought the central focus would have been the robots with Hugh Jackman. This is in fact a children's film which features a rather annoying little white kid doing hip hop dance routines with his robot friend for horribly long stretches of its running time. If this wasn't quite annoying enough the whole story is like any other feel good father/son and sports movie cliche rolled into one. The robots look pretty campy but at least it fits in with the lame story.

I had a good feeling about this ever since I first saw the trailer, despite the fact that Shawn Levy's films are usually awful. Happily, Real Steel delivered. Beneath its way too Hollywood-glossy exterior is a film that makes you care. Not strictly speaking a good film in the usual sense, but I had a great time; I knew when I welled up over a robot's ability to take a punch and still stand that at the very least this film had done a few things right. Surely a home-run for its demographic.

It's Rocky! With Robots! And Motherfreaking Wolverine! You need more? OK, it's cheesy as all giddy-up and yes, it has a kid and father and son learn something and blah. But the kid stuff (and actor) aren't bad, although he barely talks like a kid so there you go. But gosh darn it to heck, I loved the final set-piece, it was wonderful. Only the big robot saying "I must break you" in a semi-Russian accent could make it better. Definately a film for a rainy day to keep the inner 10 year old happy

Shawn Lewy. Robots. And Jackman. Three of the few things I absolutely detest in films. But I freakin loved Real Steel. There, I said it. I loved the film despite its silly premise. I enjoyed the fight scenes despite their far-fetchedness. I adored the father-son relationship despite the corny screenplay and those awful cheesy dialogues. And I still don't know what bug really bit me.

I like Rocky and I like robots. The combination of the best parts of those two things in one movie brought me enough childlike joy that for 2 hours I could let myself not be the jaded asshole who picks every single nit in all the movies I watch regardless of their intentions. It was a very refreshing feeling. Go see it and go take your son or nephew if you have one.

And the razzie goes to...Hugh Jackman for Real Steel! Woooooooooo. Man that guy was terrible. It's amazing that people liked anything about this other than the fact that you can make fun of it relentlessly/it has Evangeline Lilly's hot self in it. Has so many cheesy moments like literally every scene with the gay son. Nothing worse than watching children try to act

Is this a good movie? Well... no. But I had fun at it. The cliches are played with enough fun to not be offensive, and even the kid is only kind of annoying. The special effects are very good and the fights are pretty fun. Worth sharing with a kid who likes robots, boxing, or both.

Completely paint-by-number w/ its most similar predecessor being Stallone's arm-wrestle pic Over the Top, one can only explain the high marks critics r giving this by assuming their low expectations led 2 overwhelmingly pleasant surprise that this has got far more "heart" (i.e. glibly contrived sentiment) than something as soulless & enervating as Transformers. It's another Rocky for 12 year old boys, & although that's not saying much, it is indeed far better than another Michael Bay pummel-fest

I had reservations on giving this movie such a high score to avoid any ridicule but I don't care, I love this movie! The movie is seriously like Rocky with robots. It was also a very touching movie at parts with the bonding of a father and son. Hugh Jackman was a terrible parent in the beginning of this but redeems himself. It was also nice to see Evangeline Lilly. I was on the edge of my seat especially in the final fight. I even cheered out loud a couple times. Fun, fun and fun. I loved it!

The fights themselves are quite impressive and are fun to watch, everything beyond that not so much! From the second Jackman's annoying irritant of a son shows up every second of this shitfest can be predicted. This is made worse by the fact that for some reason Levy drags this rubbish out for two painful hours. The whole thing lacks purpose, continuity and feeling, which isn't helped by the awful character relationships, script and general underdevelopment of the "robot boxing" premise.

Follows every formula that the movies that inspired it used to a T, but it still manages to do it all very well. The robot boxing scenes look great (not believable, mind you, but no boxing scenes on film are, robots or no), and Jackman and the young boy have pretty good chemistry. I didn't find the child as annoying as some did (he had a couple of terrible lines, but he was mostly charming and genuine), and overall it's just a fun movie to watch. Very surprised.

Extremely idiotic premise and where are all the other robots who should be doing human jobs in this film? No no, we have made a real robot progress, but all we use them for is boxing matches? Besides that, Real Steel is filled with more kliché's than a fat dude is with Big Mac's and despite the horrible chemistry, the at times annoying child, lousy script and extremely one-dimensional characters I was still very much entertained by this Rocky on steroids! That's what Hollywood does best!

The father-son storyline is almost exactly like *Over the Top*--except boxing robots replace arm wrestling. (But the kid is pretty annoying and the acting is not so hot.) The robot boxer and the fight sequences draw on elements of both *Rocky* and *Iron Giant*--minus the training sequences and very good character development and the relationships between them. This could have been a much better film, but I mildly enjoyed it anyway.

All style and no substance. Throughout this turd of a movie, I was hoping for a robot to punch the shit out of little mister douche nozzle. If you want your script to be character driven, you need flawed characters, but Real Steel takes it further and has two fully flawed characters that don't have anything likable about them whatsoever. Nothing to root for. However, the robot boxing bits were really cool. Avoid this trash movie and watch the robot fight highlights on youtube instead.

In what is probably my favourite boxing movie so far, Elfman and Eminem added a lot of drive to the film. Despite the film's subject, style and theme, this was much needed as the boo-hoo-hoo father/son story was an unexpected turn-off and unnecessary slowed the film down. Fortunately, an inspired Jackman manages to save even that part - and Lilly is lovely as ever, of course. In the end, the film gets a 'Good' rating, but owes it mostly to the special effects - a very rare thing for me to say.

Overcomes a plot you'll predict beat for beat and a smug, annoyance of a kid to deliver a boxing movie that might just tug at your heartstrings a little. Yeah, it's "Rocky with robots," but it still works, even if it's in a more limited capacity. The father-son stuff is lame, as is the romantic subplot, but the underedog boxer story is effective, the special effects are great, and the fight scenes are fun. Not great, but worth seeing.

Levy wears his Spielberg and Avildsen influences squarely on his sleeve, especially with the film's themes, i.e. introspection, triumphalism, and of course, daddy issues. With Levy's eye for gorgeous photography and Elfman's inimitable scoring, the result overcomes its predictability and mawkishness and feels like a masterpiece of schmaltz.

Silly but passable entertainment would have been better a little shorter and leaner; an unnecessarily convoluted set-up (and generally convoluted plotting) allows too much time to contemplate what a well-worn path the screenplay is treading, incorporating elements of ROCKY and a million estranged father-son movies. As always, Jackman is a charismatic screen presence, and the robot fight scenes are well executed.

This film feels a bit simplified in regards to story (it's pretty basic, relies on cliches) and some cinematography ('oh, the characters are not getting along/are distant from each other? Wide shot! With them standing far apart!' - every time!), but given the target audience, it makes sense. The mix of prop robots and cgi is very well done and makes a lot of difference. I got a strong feeling that they cast a dancer for the kid and tried to force them to act. Overall, pretty enjoyable though.

A really boring and predictable plot. Atleast they could have used "Eye of the tiger" in the training section. Was there a suggestion that the robot has selfconcious moments? Real Steel was a film I wrote off as soon as I saw the trailers. However I somehow gave it a go and it's surprisingly half decent. Anything to do with robots smashing into one another usually does nothing for me. And although ultimately this is robots smashing into one another, unlike the horrible Transformers films, Real Steel never takes itself too seriously. It's a feel good film and there is an underlying heartwarming story. It's predictable and generic but it's likeable harmless fun.

If you think 'Real Steel' transcends the idea of giant robots boxing, you'd be incorrect. This movie is exactly what it advertises. Jackman plays an asshole father, Charlie, who used to box and now lets robots do the fighting. He uses his son, Max, to ride to the top and learns to love him. Max also gets him out of debt with a robot he almost died to find. There are terrible leaps of logic here. The ending is a total rip-off (or "homage") to Rocky.
