The closing frames are so remarkably fitting, because this really is a ninety minute postcard. We know so little about these characters, even Hulot himself, but by the end we feel like we're right there on vacation with them. It's amusing and entertaining, heartwarming and a bit bittersweet, and it leaves you hoping so much that when these characters say they'll be returning the following year, that they truly mean it.

Though Hulot is a great, Chaplinesque character who serves a lot of laughs, the real star of this film is the rest of society, in which everyone is a bumbling idiot. Unconventional in its lack of plot. It's more of a showcase of the ridiculous world that Tati creates.

Probably one of the most pleasant ways to spend an hour and a half. Hulot is a gentleman but he's also a bumbler and watching him react to his own inadvertent chaos is very amusing, even laugh-out-loud funny at times. Tati's slapstick is only enhanced by his compositional sensibilities - the Keaton influence is obvious, but Hulot is a bit goofier and clumsier.

A bit Chaplin and a bit Keaton, Hulot's clumsy obliviousness continually gets him into and out of trouble. What makes this film unique is its tranquil mood. Hulot brings the audience on holiday with him, the pace is gentle and peaceful, only approaching mania in the explosive climax (and even then, done with a degree of tasteful restraint). There's almost no dialogue, no plot, no sense of forward movement. It's a series of beautiful, comic postcards. The recurring musical theme is lovely too.

Hilarious slapstick, and just general chaplinesque comedy are abound in this extremely funny work by Jacques Tati. Mr. Hulot's Holiday follows around the title character Mr. Hulot through some ridiculous and almost unbearably embarassing situations whilst on his holiday on the beach. The character of Mr. Hulot is half Charlie Chaplin, and half Mr. Bean. He is an extremely fun character, and one I appreciate, but there are times in this film when it felt really dull, but generally well done!

This film is just too beautiful for words. A lighthearted slapstick piece that belies Tati's later, more socially minded work, its' beauty comes in the simplicity, from the minimalist script (the film is instead bolstered by fantastic music and sound effects) to the friendly, benevolent tone. Even at his absolute worst Hulot is nowhere near a malicious character. Fantastic, and an absolute must-see for anyone who cares even slightly about movies.

Tati here falls on the wrong side of the fine line between monotony and brilliant physical humour. But it is interesting to witness the cinematic birth of Monsieur Hulot.

Approaches nowhere near the satirical brilliance of Play Time with this simple material - and there's something just dreadfully wrong about Tati without those color compositions he excels in (despite what's offered being more than satisfactory in that field). Pleasant music is probably the most I got out of this.

Although Holiday marks the debut of Tati's Mr. Hulot character, this film is not so much about his breezy slapstick antics as it is about the quirky charms of humanity that go unnoticed every day. Holiday is not an uproarious comedy, nor does it need to be. Mr. Hulot brings us along with him on vacation not simply to laugh, but to make us fall in love with the foibles of human nature all over again.

Watching this film is like taking your own pleasant vacation away from the horrors of the everyday world. It might lack the social commentary and some of the pizzaz of Playtime, but I found Mr. Hulot's Holiday just as funny, if not funnier

A return to the styles of silent comedy. Subtle and delightful, as good as a real vacation. Mr. Hulot is both a tribute to the great silent clowns, and a delightful clown in his own right, whose heroism lies not in derring-do but in quiet nobility. Watch this movie and gain some new friends.

It's pretty cool to watch the evolution of Tati's craft from this film to Playtime -- how he honed more and more in on the essence of his style. He had his style down pretty good even at this point, though. Like the films that followed it, Mr. Hulot's Holiday offers a mood and ambiance that you can't find anywhere else. My only regret is that I've still only watched these films on far too small screens to get the full experience.

This movie is to Keaton-styled slapstick comedies as Ozu's films are to American family-based melodramas. That is to say, it's a calmer, warmer, less grandiose experience than the films it ostensibly resembles. It's a movie composed of little niceties that are oddly effective without being uproariously funny. I didn't laugh during this, but I smiled a lot. And I keep thinking back to wonderful little details, like the young boy who is miraculously able to keep his ice cream cone intact.

Jacques Tati has a wonderful ability to tell stories with his camera. The words in this film are always secondary to the images, which build to wonderfully comic sequences, and in the end, an affecting conclusion. What I love most though is the simple celebration of humanity--we are a funny kind of creature, if we'd but stop and observe awhile. Tati offers us just that opportunity with Hulot's Holiday, and I am grateful for it.

It's not the masterpiece of Tati's Trafic or Playtime, but nevertheless a clever undressing of the demented charade of beach vacation. M. Hulot is reminiscent of Buster Keaton in this film. In Trafic and Playtime he becomes more singular.

Slapstick comedy at its best. Especially chain of events type gags were fabulous. Great characterization and lovly shoots. I expected a very good movie but stumbled upon a great one. Definitely, not aged one bit.

Much in the vein of Chaplin or Keaton, Tati's cinematic alter-ego lends itself to a seemingly endless series of delicately comic, at times heartrending visual vignettes that deepens our awareness of our world today. Self-effacingly directed and accompanied by a playful jazz theme, Mr. Hulot's Holiday is probably the most relaxing way one can spend 80 minutes.

Not really my type of comedy, I guess. There's nothing really wrong with it, I chuckled a few times and the whole thing was pretty well paced and amusing enough, I just didn't find it especially funny.

I'd say that Tati really isn't a very good silent comedian, which is why a lot of the film's humor falls flat, but he is a good, inventive filmmaker. I love the way he plays with the sound design, I love the breezy summer vacation atmosphere and I love the postcard ending, among other things. Two funny scenes: The boat that folds in half, the tennis scene. (two times)

It's interesting that while watching I didn't feel too strongly about it one way or another but as the final moments struck I found myself coming around on it. The lack of characterization and the thin (or simplistic depending on how you look at it) script aside, it is a fairly amusing and endearing movie. Hulot to some is a menace but to a few others bored of their routine he brings a spark (literal in one fantastic sequence) into their lives.

tati must have a little bit genius and insanity up in that head of his. the majority of this film features no speech, but all of the sound effects and background noise you would expect in modern film. it ends up feeling like a strange mash up between silent slapstick and french new wave. the end result's only value lies in the quality of the slapstick, which ends up being simply tolerable.

The card-scene and parts of the funeral was fun... While watching the rest I was so bored I felt like carving a head into the carrot I was about to eat, using nothing but my teeth. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have done that.. Or at least have used a potato and some tools... Well, maybe I shouldn't even have watched this while being sleep-depraved for 30-40 hours, but normally that makes everything so much more fun! - this was just tame and uninvolving.. So it goes.

Fascinating to see this after having loved generations of comedians so clearly inspired by Tati. There is so much Mr. Bean, John Cleese and everyone in this; the gimmicks ranging from small, clever jokes to highly coordinated ones. All framed in a very smooth, artistic style. I'm not sure whether a plot would have spoiled the delight of the sketch-like scenes, but I admit to having felt it lacked story development. Now, afterwards, I'm split on that. But a clearcut classic if there ever was one.

Once I got used to the presentation of the film - where you have to keep your attention on background images and sounds to make the jokes work even more - this becomes a joyfully funny and charming comedy. Jacques Tati's titular character shows his talent as a physical actor as well as a director. Compared to Playtime which, admittedly on one viewing, felt over-obssessed with its scale, this strikes a balance between the technicality of the jokes and a home-grown sincerity of the content.

You know what I've never said while watching a Buster Keaton 60 minute long movie? I wish this was 120 minutes. I wouldn't say this is a BAD movie, per se, but it's plot less appeal is the non stop physical, slapstick comedy. If you really love this style, this is for you, but for me, 30 minutes in I was already thinking: We Get It. You Are Clumsy. And then it kept going, and without any of the WOW moments you get with Baby Buster.

I suspect I would have given this a 95 or something if I had seen it in 53 in a theater in Paris. As it is, it's still an above average movie (and unlike a lot of silent "comedies" there were actually jokes and gags and goofs and horse ups)

things that playtime had that this doesn't: glorious set design. exquisite colour composition. and most importantly, a topic of interest. this film isn't about anything. i mean it's not bad, it's a frequently (but mildly) amusing diversion that is pleasant to watch, but there is no brilliant send-off to modernity here, or anything else. a man's on a holiday. passable.

I almost feel bad saying so, but I sat stone faced and completely unmoved by this film. I don't think it's a bad film, but it's the sort of film that is sheer torture to sit through if you aren't finding it funny. It's not Tati in general ... I have seen films by him before and enjoyed them.

I really, really tried to like this movie because there is a great vibe and underlying charm to it, but it just doesn't work for me. There are a couple of clever jokes, but for the most part I just didn't find it funny at all. There is also no real plot, etc, so there weren't other things that I could focus on outside the humor. The slapstick humor doesn't works as well as in Chaplin and Keaton films, mostly because I don't think they really commit to it. It feels somewhat unsure of what it is.
