I really don't get why this is officially a "documentary". That actually makes less sense than the Catfish-makers' desperate and silly attempt to pretend their film wasn't fictional. Not because the performances were more believable in Catfish, god no, This ain't California basically has great and very believable performances all the way...it just works better as a work of fiction than a historical document. And not just because it simply isn't one.
