The only romantic film that has ever truly resonated with me. John Barry's score is a masterpiece; it has an aching, haunting, ethereal quality that's difficult to describe. It envelops everything on-screen, and in doing so, transports the viewer to another world. And I think combined with the authentic performances of the leads and the unique late 70's interpretation of 1912, I'm able to embrace its sappy and syrupy nature.

For good and ill this is unabashedly, deliriously romantic & there isn't a moment of longing that isn't wrung out for every ounce of emotion. Yet somehow the film still works for me. Maybe it's the relentless seductiveness of the score, or the way Reeves guides us through patches of overwrought melodrama w/a heartfelt& moving performance. More likely it's the unpredictable story-line created by an oddly original time-travel conceit & one of Richard Matheson's best, patented Holy Sh-t! moments.

Since John Barry died a few days ago I decided to rewatch this movie which is a classic from my childhood. I watched the first time because "Superman" a.k.a. my first sex symbol was in it. And as all romantics I cried a lot. The music is superb! Now an adult the film seems a little corny to me but I still like it.

Successful combination of Sci-Fi with Romance! As the producers and the cast have said over and over, this movie was about bringing the past to life in a meaningful way. Although some of the characters seemed to lack depth, the heart of the movie is the plot/concept of time travel. Two warnings: Yes, this is a chick flick; the film takes some license with the novel. Excellent film anyway!

Retardedly unwatchable love story, that only pays off when you see Reeve pull off a great ending, although contrived and intentionally tear-jerking. I have no qualms with the acting or direction, but the fact that this movie isn't my kind of movie aside, there's nothing that the target audience will really say "wow" about.

Gotta love it, Jane Seymour is haunting. The music that you can't forget is from Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (Variation XVIII--listen to it on YouTube). Christopher Reeve (bless his soul) is ambulatory. What's not to like?

Fantastic. A terrific love story told in a very unique way. Reeve and Seymour are perfect together. A great ending and a wonderful theme song also. Big recommendation.

A good deal more uneventful than I would have preferred, but a little time travel always goes a long way for me.

Much better viewed as a horror story about a time travelling succubus.

Bittersweet movies always get to me. It's quite lovely, especially with John Barry's music. They really shouldn't have tried to pass off Jane Seymour as an American actress because she sounds ridiculously British.

If you're looking for a romantic time travel movie, this is it! Also, a different and great role for Christopher Reeve.

Compare this to THE FLY: both concern a likeable man who wants to achieve a miraculous displacement (one temporal, the other spatial); both men succeed, but a tiny impurity they bring with them dooms their respective science fictional romances, tearing them away from their love interests and suffusing the films with a tragic air. Also, both movies feature one of those "getting to know each other" musical montage sequences we all know and love. With a better director this may have been something.

I wasn't paying much attention to this while it was on, so my rating is based on what little I saw when my phone wasn't distracting me, and also what I remember from when I saw it a decade ago. I was looking for something to break my heart, and I remembered this being a particularly devastating romance, but I think it was devastating to me then only because I didn't really understand loss and heartbreak. Props to the beautiful cinematography and rousing score though.

Utterly ridiculous. It is, however, worth a laugh and a half. Not that that was its intention.

Strong performances from Reeve & Seymour, as well as a very authentic atmosphere, carry this period romance more than the actual romance itself, which unfortunately never really feels right. The plot & pacing are a tad clunky, the dialogue isn't always great, & the emotional impact the story wants to have is never truly earned. Still, it does have its positives, namely the excellent Elise character & the fantastic score. Overall, it's a fine romantic drama that's worth a watch.

Kinda weird but kinda fun. I don't really understand why this man falls so deeply in love with a painting, but I guess I can't judge given the amount of fictional characters I'd sell my actual lungs for. It's a decent movie, albeit kinda bizarre.

Somehow "schmaltzy" comes to mind. The script seems to leap into the realm of WTH pretty quickly and the music drips of syrupy sweetness. Still Jane Seymour is unbelievably hot and...oh wait, now I remember why I liked this.
