Overlong, tedious and an ordinary heist ending. Huge chance missed, as it could have been interesting.

I promise you their best offer is the always amazing Geoffrey Rush. There are some painfully amazing shots that go along with the PAINFULLY terrible twists and turns. I have no idea if this requires a spoiler alert, but the presence of Jim Sturgess was at least as much a detriment to the film as the presence of Adrien Brody was to The Village. I want nothing more than to believe in the crippling horror that is agoraphobia, but I've seen Crawlspace with Klaus Kinski, so home is scarier than out.

A wonderfully and professionally composed film in all regards, especially the set-design/mise-en-scene which is so integral to the story. Rush is very good with his performance and how he must keep up with the varied, but sensible transitions in plot and mood. Not all of it is engaging, but by the end, it all makes sense and all the lesser moments of the film are given a new meaning. Consider this a film that played me like a piano.

Supercilious. I don't know why, but that was the first word that came into my mind when I was about to write this review. The movie tries very (much too) hard to set up this supposed hyper-exclusive upper-class social scene in which to perform its "play" (plot). Despite all that, I found the chemistry between actors very good, and it has a lot of charm. And, I must repeat, despite the supercilious prissiness, all in all, it was actually a satisfying experience.

Starts off as a delightful mystery, centred on a strong and mannered performance by Geoffrey Rush in a setting of sheer opulence, beauty and class. So, a lot to like! The story seems intriguing but like so many it descends into preposterous nonsense after a certain plot point which undermines the premise. By the end it's a catalogue of weak acting and silly Macguffins, though the chewed-up scenery still exudes some class.

Starts well enough with and intriguing plot, but then it falls into common places and it becomes incredible obvious when it was supposed to be not obvious. The acting is uneven and this proves that Tornatore is an overrated director.

I'm forgiving the impossible story, and the profound cruelty, because of Geoffrey Rush, and also the enchanting woman.

A tedious romantic mystery that was sold as a mystery-thriller

A compelling, despite the (unjustifiably) inflated runtime, and, at times, even suspenseful film, benefiting from a superb lead performance from Geoffrey Rush and an interesting, intricate script. However, the symbolism and juxtaposition often felt forced and clunky, while the final twist seemed overtly reminiscent of second-rate potboilers. Although involving and generally well-made, the film is ultimately less smart and more contrived than it wants to be considered.

Such a let down. Promising storyline that fails to deliver anything expected of a psychological thriller. It's an insult to the genre. It needed to be far more perverse to be engaging for the viewer. It's so bad I did not even notice the Morricone score!

Tornatore's excellent take on (and subversion of) a crime caper is a fine showcase for Rush, who bringing heartbreaking depth and layers to his coldly officious "snob". It's perhaps too obvious from the outset that we are dealing with a "nesting doll" con, and the story direction seems a little too obvious in a slightly saggy mid-section, but the meticulously detailed and ornate world these characters exist in, and the texture that all the actors bring, make the wait largely worth the effort.

Giuseppe Tornatore

Great performances and story. I can't help but wonder if Geoffrey Rush paid to play this part. :) His character is very interesting, but I just couldn't help recalling his great line from POTC, "We call the monkey Jack".

Beautifully set with a magical performance from Rush; pulled down by an implausible storyline and a weak script. As others have commented, not nearly as smart as it would like to be. This film could have made much more of its premise, however, even as it is, the viewing experience was enjoyable enough and never dull.

Even if this story has been done a touch differently before, Tornatore's portrait of a fragile man falling for a fragile woman under such bizarre circumstances is ever fascinating. Many tend to critique the overblown runtime, but not once did I find the film dragging; it moves along at the same deliberate pace since its opening, and even in its ending, which is predictable but well done, it's very cautious about how much time it takes. Rush, of course, is fantastic.

It has a fascinating story that does not bore you despite its long runtime, which more than makes up for its shortcomings. If I were forced to choose, the major problem with this movie would be too much clarification: it tries to be too clear and sometimes becomes tediously repetitive. While it may strengthen the plot and make it flawless in terms of storytelling, at the same time this allows the audience to predict the story, and what's worse, takes away the mysteriousness of the story.

Rush is excellent and the relationship between both his and Hoeks unusual characters is quite a delicious mystery to follow. That said the 2 hr plus runtime drags a little and could have benefited from a tighter edit. It was also unfortunate that the ending was a lot weaker than the build-up deserved, however this is still a refreshing change of pace on a number of levels and worth a watch for those undecided on a viewing.

Starts well, drawing you into an intriguing little mystery with an interesting setting and characters. But later the plot becomes a bit too silly and the characters a bit too contrived to remain invested in the outcome. Geoffrey Rush is an excellent actor and makes this picture far better than it would have been without him. The film could have been significantly improved by giving Donald Sutherland a more central role and re-casting the kid who plays the tinkerer in a bit part or cutting him

It had a good beginning, and I found myself intrigued, but later on, it felt like a typical heartbreak romance drama where the guy falls for the girl and gets played. He ends up in a wheelchair. And still waits for her to come back to him...

I didn't see a bit of this film as dragging or boring, but as a scene-by-scene ascending steps to the shocking ending. Hopefully, one didn't read the summary of this film on the internet, which spoils everything, and I'm glad I didn't have a clue. Yet, I did predict a part of the ending while watching, but I did not expect the mysterious conclusion. I had to go online to find out others perspective, and to be drawn into a conversation about a film always makes a good viewing for me.

Art and decor is beautiful, but there's something very vulgar about its lush presentation, and more clearly vulgar about the story. Themes and ideas don't click; there's no depth. Some visual impressions remain -like the presentation of its forged lead-, and Morricone's score is very evocative, way beyond the material.

A tour de force for Geoffrey Rush, and a knockout spectacle due to the baroque oneness of sophisticated cinematography and opulently art-filled production design, The Best Offer is a truly heart-tugging emotional roller coaster that culminates to a final scene, filmed in a perfect single take, that is an across-the-board masterpiece all its own.
